About Mandy Vutshkes
Dr. Mandy Vutshkes is an Israeli historian trained in cultural anthropology. Recently retired, she has taught at Harvard University, the University of Malmo, and the Institute of Advanced Philosophy in Ofakim, Israel. Her academic specialities include folkore and technology among Eastern European Jews, material culture, and identity politics. Dr. Vutshkes publications include Uva ham po: Toldot ha-mazgan bamedinat yisrael (Am lo-oved, 1984); Onanut etsel mehagrey polaniya bazman haliya hashniya (Am hamenonen, 1990); Ima, tavili shtiya: Batlanut etsel hano'ar batsfon tel aviv (Kibbutz hamegamgem, 1996), and the recently acclaimed Yihiye beseder: Fantaziyot yehudey mizrah-eyropa lifney ha milhama hashniya (Magnes 2005). She has recently been working to retrieve overlooked data on the Jews of Eastern Europe and has initiated a number of book, film and recording projects. She was voted Miss Flatbush of 1936.
