About Rabbi Yonah
Chassidic-Zionist, tree-hugger, save-the-whales, meat-eating, music loving, baal-teshuva, stand up proud Yid, who listens to Motown (my hometown) and bluegrass, and everything in between.
I drove an '78 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, powder-blue former grandma-mobile, delivering pizzas in suburban Detroit during high-school, went to Israel and joined Habonim Workshop and Machon, then drove a forklift for six months.
Veteran of many causes in the USA: nuclear disarmament, old-growth forests, stop nuclear testing, pro-Israel advocacy, and some other geo-political 80’s stuff. Oh and Eugene’s co-ops, which I was active in for years.
Spent much of the 1990's working to rebuild Polish Jewry, as a camp counsellor volunteer, as a Fulbright Fellow in Krakow, and later in Warsaw, running the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation.
Got turned on to traditional/Chassidic/enthusiastic Judiasm with Shlomo Carlebach in the late 1980’s and journeyed for a long time till finding my place where I am now. Learned at Yeshiva Darche Noam, did my MA at Oxford University, and a few other things. Married a sweet/brilliant/talented gal named Rachel Steiner from Northern California. We have four kids.
Completed a traditional and exhaustive smicha, rabbinical ordination, in Monsey and then moved to SoCal. Currently, we have the job of our dreams, working in Southern California with students and young adults. Couldn’t be happier to be right where we are today. Stop on by for Shabbat Dinner if you are in the hood.

I
remember vividly as a child marching in the Israel parades in suburban
Detroit. I am not sure how far these marches even went - maybe only a
mile. No matter. Marching as a kid with hundreds of Jews from my camps,
and with Jews from every generation is a highlight of my childhood. I
cherish this memory. It stood out as inspirational, amidst a Jewish
communal life that was sorely lacking inspiration. Not until Jewish
summer camp was being Jewish that exciting. When I read about Walk the Land’s
effort to create Israel walks world-wide in solidarity with Israel on
her 60th birthday, it brought back those marches and that great
feeling.
