Shmarya Rosenberg In The NY Times

By Jewcy Staff / January 9, 2010

Congrats (i.e. big mazel) to failedmessiah.com blogger and frequent Jewcy contributor Shmarya Rosenberg on The New York Times profile piece today (January 9, 2010 pg A17).  The Times reports Shmarya has "transmuted a combination of muckraking reporting and personal grudge into a must-read digest of the actual and alleged misdeeds of the ultra-Orthodox world."  We likey.

Truth be told (and please keep this quiet) the Jewish population is not that large and the Jewish media world is even smaller.  The fact that any of us penguins can make the real news by addressing stereotypes, ethics, and insider nonsense is remarkable AND important.  Keep fighting the good fight…and on that note WTF Fresh Direct!  Take down this page already!

Interesting that Ultra Orthodox Jews like other Fundamentalists believe that G-d
hates the “heretics” and all others who do not conform to their views.
If the “heretic” is not stuck down by G-d, Himself, then the Ultra
Orthodox Jew believes that it his duty to shun, to mock, and even
physically and violently attack “the other”. They project all the
problems they face onto “the other”, never dealing with the problems
themselves, only hating on those who had the courage they lack: to tell
the often times ugly truth. It is so much easier to mock than deal with
the real issues! I wonder when the Ultra Orthodox will see that it is
not G-d who hates that so-called “heretic”, the one whose views are
different….it is the Ultra Orthodox who hates reproval and hates within
    their hearts their fellow Jew.

Notice comment 12 complaining of censorship of pro-Shmarya comments, but comment 5 calls for Shmarya to be murdered.

I really don’t understand why many will accuse Shmarya of being against Orthodox Judaism or the Torah. I’ll see people make this accusation against him, but as for myself, I’ve never seen him write a single word against Orthodoxy or the Torah. I’m an Orthodox Jew, and I cannot remember ever seeing Shmarya write anything with which I disagreed.

Mazel tov! Hazak u-barukh! Yasher koah! Hazak, hazak, v-tit’hazek! Go Shmarya, and keep up the excellent job – you’re doing G-d’s work!

    (Ditto for David Kelsey.)
