Indie Minyan Survey

By Tamar Fox / June 19, 2007
Jewcy loves trees! Please don't print!

Mechon Hadar and the S3K Synagogue Studies Institute are sponsoring a survey to find out more about the participants, members, partners, and "acquaintances" of indie minyanim and other new alternative Jewish spiritual communities around the country. The end results of this work will be a portrait of the interests, values, and concerns of not only your local community, but indeed of a critical innovative turn in American Judaism. Steven M. Cohen, a prominent sociologist, will be analyzing the data from the survey. It’s a painless and relatively quick way to help indie minyans and other alternative Jewish communities find out who they really are, and who they can be. Head over to http://www.communitysurvey.info to complete the survey. Your answers are confidential. If you have any questions, please write to Kehilat Hadar at info[at]mechonhadar[dot]org or directly to Steven M. Cohen at smcjewishresearch[at]gmail[dot]com.

Thanks for the shout-out! One important point: the survey isn’t only for people who attend independent minyanim. It is “a study of Jews who are somehow connected to a very diverse array of Jewish spiritual communities. These groups’ activities may well take place outside established congregations, but some do meet in, or are part of, ‘regular’ congregations. They go by various names: ‘minyan,’ ’spiritual community,’ ‘alternative worship service,’ ‘chavurah,’ ‘congregation,’ and others.â€

Also, Kehilat Hadar isn’t the sponsor – the sponsors are the S3K Synagogue Studies Institute and Mechon Hadar.
