Video: "Why We Need a Liberal Jewish Lobby" |

Why do we need a liberal Jewish lobby? What does "liberal" even mean, anyway? What's wrong with existing Israel lobbies?
The 92nd Street Y in New York recently held a panel discussion which addressed these issues and more. Jeremy Ben-Ami (Executive Director of J Street), Jane Eisner (Editor of The Forward), Michelle Goldberg (author of Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism), Eric Alterman (Professor of Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism), and Rabbi Steve Gutow (Executive Director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs) spent more than an hour untangling these complicated issues. You can view the full video here:
For more information, try the 92Y blog. Also, Jewschool has a response to Rabbi Gutow from an unaffiliated Jew who finds fault with his arguments.

To keep the insulin manufacturers in business. Without cancer, chemotherapy companies would go under. Similarly, we need a liberal Jewish lobby so we can be evenhanded between Israel and Iran

It reminds me of the old Woody Allen joke. "My uncle is a reformed Jew. A very reformed Jew. A Nazi".
Considering so many "right-wing" Israelis like Begin, Sharon and Netanyahu have bent over backwards to accomadate those Arabs who have swore openly or swear quitely to the destruction of Israel, it seems a so-called "liberal" Israel lobby would simply exist to call for an orderly Jewish evacuation of Israel with as little bloodshed in the surrender as possible; in other words, a "liberal" Jewish lobby would be no different than a "moderate" Islamist lobby. The "moderate" Islamist will be happy to accept the surrender of a "liberal" Jew provided he is sufficiently contrite and pays reperations for his "crimes" against Arabs as he is driven into the sea. Perhaps a "liberal" Jewish lobby could arrange for a settlement in Madagascar which is where some "moderate" Nazis wanted to relocate Europe's Jews in the 1930's.
The smeared and demonized US Israel Lobby are true liberals. So-called 'liberal" Jews tend to be leftist and enablers of Islamic-fascism.

A parable to share:
Last year I graduated from a large public university in a sizeable North American city known for its progressive outlook.
On this campus there was a pro-Israel club organized by eager students fresh from summer Hasbara programs, supported by a paid Jewish Agency representative.
For several years, the theme of the club was that Israel was unquestionably right, and that its critics were evil.
Daniel Pipes was brought in to speak. The club ran a very public and very ineffective campaign to stop a speech by Noam Chompsky, on the grounds that he was antisemitic. Neither of these activities made any friends, nor did they convince the general student population of the justness of a democratic and Jewish state of Israel.
Under new leadership the club took a left turn last year. They didn't announce it publicly, but chose to put on events of a different flavor. People invited to speak included an Israeli Arab journalist and a founder of Peace Now (שלום עכשיו). There was also free screening of the virulently anti-war Israeli drama "Late Summer Blues" (בלוז לחופש הגדול), and a panel discussion by local students who had served in the IDF in the territories.
None of these events strongly endorsed Israeli policy. Some came out firmly against it. Mainly they showed the state of Israel as complex--but all implicitly expressed a belief in the existence of a Jewish state, with a majority Jewish population.
When the Hasbara folks insisted that Israel can do no wrong, the university audience was skeptical, and assumed that the opposite must be true. In showing Israel's foibles, the more "left" iteration of my campus pro-Israel club was able to appear more honest, and thus gain public trust. This in turn may have led more people to see Israel's existence as legitimate, which should itself be seen as a victory for friends of Eretz Yisrael.

You are setting up foolish straw men.
I doubt "the theme of the club was that Israel was unquestionably right, and that its critics were evil" and "that Israel can do no wrong". When faced with such hate and genocidal threats that Israel confronts every day, her supporters set down defensive markers which is appropriate when confronted with people who call for the destruction of Israel and those who make excuses for them like Chomsky.
Israel's history as a progressive and dynamic democracy should speak for itself rather than for Jews to once again prove their humanity and make a case why they should not be exterminated.
Telling a "university audience" what they want to hear is not an education. Telling them facts about the constant stream of degenerate hate that comes out of Israel's neighbors may be telling them something they do not know.
Most people are shockingly ignorant of the Israel-Arab conflict and telling them both sides are equally responsible and the conflict is a giant misunderstanding is a lie.

what's all the lobbying about, America's blood and treasure for Israel?
America would be better served without any of it...i mean jeez, ya got Israel already, why not just surrender your American passport and go there already and stfu ...

I think that arguing Israel is some perfect moral entity capable is of wrongdoing is ludicrous. It's neither right-wing nor left-wing.
While I agree that presenting an interpretation of events that is 'pro-Israel' in terms of foregin policy is desirable and that Israelis should argue that both sides do not share 'equal blame', part of making this case is presenting the entire state as it is, and that includes its culture, which features a strong self-critical and introspective tradition that does not exist in undemocratic socities. It is natural and reasonable for people to sympathise with democratic societies if they live in one themselves. The presentation of the flaws in the Israeli state is vital in presenting the state (a) as a democratic state, but not as a fantastic creature of light that no country is capable of being and (b) by implication, as a state worthy of international support and concern.
Alcove-One
Anyone who needs further proof that Israel is democratic state and a state worthy of international support and concern is a true moron or a devote Jew hater so don't even waste your breath.

Except for the Zionist Organization of America, Jews for the Preservations of Firearms, the Republican Jewish Coalition, and perhaps 2 others, they are all liberal.
Remeber how AIPAC, the AJC etc folded when Hillary Clinton ran away in horror at the thought of Jews allowing Palin to speak?
How many of these "Jewish" organizations like the AJC are useful idiots for the Islamist lobby or are importing our doom through supporting mass immigration. Have you not seen the Chilluol Hashem known as
Progress by Pesach, supported by American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, and other groups that are liberal before Jewish?
What is being proposed in this article is not a Liberal Jewish Lobby, but communist front groups with Kapos willing to denounce any semblance of Jewish sanity or Zionism.

Since when was Israel a left-right issue? Rightists are "America firsters" and leftists are "human rightsers" (ie: weakness-makes-right), and neither of those have even the slightest respect for Israel. We don't need a "liberal" Jewish lobby because we shouldn't be on one side or the other at all.
TheTzadik
There aren't enough interest groups in the US promoting pro-arab policies. The world needs at least one Jewish orginazition lobbying for anti-Israel measures. Then when the Mulims capture America and establish their trans-atlantic caliphate the Jews will be able to say, "have mercy on us...look....you see? We were anti-israel even before you came!".

Rightists are "America firsters" and leftists are "human rightsers" (ie: weakness-makes-right),
Put your broad bush away and get a clue.

"Then when the Mulims capture America and establish their trans-atlantic caliphate the Jews will be able to say, "have mercy on us...look....you see? We were anti-israel even before you came!"."
Quite right. I am keeping a record of all the antisemitic and self-hating Jews who comment here at Jewcy. They will all be richly rewarded when we establish the caliphate here, demand that everyone turn in his Prius for a camel, and scoop up all the white women for ourselves.
Oops. How did that slip out? Ummm, never mind. Only kidding. We have no plans of taking over. None at all. Honest. You believe me, right?
Zeevico
You know, kiddo, considering you support Hamas, those jokes aren't as funny when they come out of you.
Ismail
"You know, kiddo, considering you support Hamas, those jokes aren't as funny when they come out of you."
Jokes?
Morganfrost
Yeah, left-wing Jews. What a concept. I think Herbert nailed the issue, and I think Ismail is the perfect example of why the Jewish people really ought to stop looking to find friends and sympathy on the left.
Alcove-One
"and scoop up all the white women for ourselves"
Women? ....OK Ismail, whatever you say (wink)

It's quite striking really. Hardly different from the public American government facing 'proposals' of the Arab states.

No question about it, the American Jewish withdrawal advocacy group, J
Street, declared war on the incoming Netanyahu administration in particular
and the Jewish State in general with a poll that they released.
[The group is a "withdrawal advocacy group" rather than a "peace" group
because there is no discernable connection between the policies that they
advocate - withdrawal - and true peace.]
For the complete poll:
www.jstreet.org/files/images/J_Street_Survey_March_2009_Final_Results.do...
Take a look at the ideas they use the format of poll questions to introduce:
Would you support or oppose the United States playing an active role in
helping the parties to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict if it meant the
United States publicly stating its disagreements with Israel?
Would you support or oppose the United States playing an active role in
helping the parties to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict if it meant the
United States exerting pressure on Israel to make the compromises necessary
to achieve peace?
Middle East peace is a core American interest, and the United States should
use assertive diplomacy to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
It does not bother me when American Jews disagree publicly with Israeli
government policy.
The United States should propose a detailed plan to resolve the Arab-Israeli
conflict and assertively use our influence to lead the parties to implement
this American plan.
Jewish organizations that lobby Congress to support every Israeli government
policy are not helping Israel's security
Using incentives such as economic aid, military assistance, and support in
international institutions, the United States has the leverage to impose a
peace agreement on the Israelis and Palestinians.
I am concerned that other Americans will end up resenting American Jews
because of America's perceived favoritism toward Israel under all
circumstances.
With Hamas launching rockets into southern Israel that killed many Israeli
civilians and Israel launching air and ground strikes that killed many
Palestinian civilians, neither side has a monopoly on who is right and who
is wrong.
With hundreds of Palestinian civilian deaths and a humanitarian crisis
resulting from a month of no electricity and clean water throughout Gaza,
Israel's response to Hamas' attacks was disproportionate
Israeli military actions that target terrorists, but kill Palestinian
civilians create more terrorism instead of preventing terrorism
Israel has the right to defend itself, but it must also take into account
humanitarian considerations and avoid collective punishment of the entire
Palestinian population by closing the borders and causing major civilian
hardship
Below is a list of actions the United States could take to try convincing
the Palestinians and Israelis to accept this peace agreement today. For each
action, please mark whether you approve or disapprove that action.
- Publicly state which party is responsible for blocking the agreement from
being reached
- Reduce economic aid for any party that blocks the agreement from being
reached
- Reduce military aid for Israel if it blocks the agreement from being
reached
- Reduce American support for Israel in international institutions if it
blocks the agreement from being reached
And here is the question seriously distorting what Lieberman said: "As you
may know, Israel had an election earlier this month. The party receiving the
third largest number of seats is led by Avigdor Lieberman who has previously
called for the execution of Arab members of Israel's parliament who met with
Hamas and whose main campaign message called for Arab citizens of Israel to
sign a loyalty oath to the Jewish state in order to prevent their
citizenship from being revoked. Do you support or oppose these positions?"]
