Stumblebum Al Qaeda Hurts Self

Good news out of Algeria -- an al Qaeda training camp, believed to be the incubator of biological weapons, has gone kaput because all the jihadis got infected with whatever they were cooking up:

The story was first reported by the British tabloid the Sun, which said the al Qaeda operatives died after being infected with a strain of bubonic plague, the disease that killed a third of Europe's population in the 14th century. But the intelligence official dismissed that claim.

AQIM, according to U.S. intelligence estimates, maintains about a dozen bases in Algeria, where the group has waged a terrorist campaign against government forces and civilians. In 2006, the group claimed responsibility for an attack on foreign contractors. In 2007, the group said it bombed U.N. headquarters in Algiers, an attack that killed 41 people.

Black Death would have had a certain ring to it, although the last time it caused trouble on a massive scale was still about seven centuries too late for the age Al Qaeda wants to bring back.

The fact that they got that far is terrifing enough. They have to be lucky only once, we have to be lucky everytime.

Gives you an idea what we can expect in the 21st Century if we let our guard down.

......and the crowd at the Inaugural openly mocked President Bush. Fools.

I guess that's a good outcome in this one particular instance, but the buried lede -- al Qaeda ops have access to bubonic plague -- is really, really frightening. At least it's old school enough that our antibiotics can handle it. If they got their mitts on something like Ebola, a nuclear attack would feel like a street party by comparison. Has any other report confirmed this? (Good example, btw, of why preventive/pre-emptive regime change programmes -- whatever else they may have going for them -- are a poor use of counterterrorism resources.)

al Qaeda ops have access to bubonic plague

yeah, that was the sun's claim, but eli's source says it's bogus. whatever it is -- anthrax, ricin -- still chilling that they've got some.

The terrorists that Prez Obama will release from Gitmo will have their work cut out for them.

Eli's source may be playing on a technicality. Beubonic - Pneumonic.

Pneumonic plague is less common the Beubonic Plague, but more deadly. It is spread, like the flu, by airborne bacteria, and can be inhaled and transmitted between humans without the involvement of animals or fleas.

Either way, it looks like Biological or Chemical agents have made progress.

I believe Europe would be tAQIM's first target.
