Are "Minority Discounts" for Israeli Arabs Reverse Discrimination?

Are "Minority Discounts" for Israeli Arabs Reverse Discrimination?

Affirmative Action: or reverse discrimination?Affirmative Action: or reverse discrimination?Home Center, an Israeli home wares chain, has been offering  a secret discount to Arabs. When customer Eli Chai discovered and reported this last week, a Home Center spokesperson explained, “Home Center offers a wide range of attractive discounts throughout the year. As part of a plan to target specific communities, the chain offers different discounts for different sectors from time to time.”

The situation does seem pretty odd, but not altogether uncalled for. I wouldn’t be surprised if Arabs do more than 70% of the construction in Israel, and thus end up spending the most money at those sorts of stores. Why wouldn’t Home Center capitalize on that customer base by offering a good deal?

Of course, that’s not how it’s being framed in Israel. Chai is quoted as saying, “I didn't expect to get a discount, but I was appalled when I realized that had I been Arab I would have received one. I tried to think what would happen if it was a discount only for Jews, or Sephardim, or Ashkenazim.”

There's plenty of discrimination against Arabs in Israel, and Chai isn’t bothered by that. But when Arabs are favored, it’s a grave in justice!  It may feel inappropriate to offer a discount based on ethnicity, but it’s hardly shocking in a society that’s so clearly divided along those lines.

im going to have to agree with you on this, discrimination against arabs is tolerated even supported in some segments of israeli society mainly by the mizrachi and chareidi. but let anyone even hint towards giving favor to arabs then the self righteous condemnation starts . this hypocrisy is found all over in the states against non jews .

but theres no denying this is discrimination ,not merely  "inappropriate"

only when there is discrimination against Arabs but when there is discrimination against Jews Fox isn't bothered by that, but that is hardly shocking given that Fox lives in a society divided along similar lines.

I understood your point in this article but im not sure why youre criticizing Chai ,do you want him to issue a condemnation against discrimination toward arabs? he was addressing the discrimination he saw .thats it.  this is where youre blinded by your need to distance yourself from those racist israelis (sic) and just attack anyone who you feel is a part of said society.

They should offer discounts to construction companies, not ethnic sectors.

Would such a headline bother anybody in the US?   I'm sure it would.  I'm not aware of any "for Jews only" discounts in Israeli stores and there should be no "for Arabs only" discounts either.

However, if you are going to offer ethnic based discounts, do it openly, because, we, the customers, must be aware of them.  Transparency is the only way to allow market forces to work and right the situation.  Having the knowledge of the store discount policy the customers could make educated decision whether or not to shop this store.

It was interesting to hear this bit about the Arab discounts at Home Center stores but unfortunately the picture is far wider than this.  It also concerns the whole feeling one gets when shopping at Home Center.  I am a small business owner and I receive a discount as a contractor at Home center.  I have always been gratefull for this.  Now the reason that I try my best not to do business at Home Center is that 1. Although there is enough staff to handle all the differant departments, not one can be found in his/her designated deptment and 2. contrary to  employee policies 95% of the employees are Arabic.  Not Arabic employees ready to serve the customer but Arabic employees with a definate attitude issue to serve its Jewish clients. I have found this most true at 7-Star Mall Herzalia and Shfayim.  Not long ago Home Center employeed workers Arab, Jew, Elderly, Handicapped, Students and Solidiers after their tour of duty that honestly showed their sincereity to serve their customers.  Unfortunately, I feel this no longer exists.  Not the same level of employees and not the same Home Center feeling that one received when entering the store.  Today, I feel as though I am walking into an atmosphere of being unwanted.  This shouldn't be my major problem in life but the honest truth is that these employees are lacking in customer service and are never to be found.  If I do finally locate say the employee for the gardening dept, he has a definate attitude issue.  I don't know if it is the fact that I am Jewish or if it is just that he has had to come out of his hiding place and actually has to do some work.  These workers have made me feel so humiliated at times that I have simply waked out of the store.  I am not talking about a few shekels a month.  I am talking about thousands of shekels annually that I have spent in the Home Center franchise.  There is such a Jewish/Arab issue at Home Center that I am no longer willing to allow this group of employees humiliate me any longer.  I go into a store positive minded and some employee humiliates me the first thing that comes to mind that like him, I have say 50 workers working for me but workers that know how to behave and the ones that don't abide are dismissed.  It's not that when I walk in I feels overwhelmed by Arabic employees which shouldn't be a problem but when requesting for assistance, some punk shows up with an attitude issue.  Sorry Home Center, thanks for the contract discount but no thanks.  Either train your staff properly or fire the whole lot of them and bring back to work the elderly, soliders (miadefit), arabs, jews no matter but employees that value their place of employeement.  So from this moment on ya all got one less customer.  The issue of Arab discounts is only the tip of the iceberg. Boycott Home Center.  Beware of Ace and most importantly, spend your hard earned shekels at some of the smallers stores located in Herzalia, Ra'anana and Netania centers.  These folks will more than welcome your business.
