Oriana Fallaci, RIP

The Rage and the Pride was a little too obsessed with Arab hygiene for my tastes, but Oriana Fallaci could at least notice a threat far greater than the olefactory when it came her way. And given that a ridiculous legal case had been prepared against her, threatening this cancer-stricken 77 year-old journalist with jail time for "offending" ethnic sensibilities, Fallaci ended her life as the Michel Houellebecq of Rome — not a bad accomplishment for an anti-Fascist ball-buster who once pointed out to Ariel Sharon that he'd become obese.

But she was also a grade-A interviewer, not afraid to call out Henry Kissinger or Vo Nguyen Giap, or Yasir Arafat on their own bullshit. About a year ago, I found a battered copy of Interview with History — Fallaci's collection of Q&A's with these and other hard-to-reach figures — lying in the dollar rack outside Manhattan's Strand bookstore. Here's what she managed to elicit from Golda Meir in the 70's:

But let's get back to Europe and the fact that terrorism has its headquarters in Europe. In every European country are offices of so-called liberation movements, and you know very well it's not a matter of harmless offices. But you do nothing against them. You'll be sorry. Thanks to your inertia and your indulgence, terror will be multiplied and you'll pay the price of it too….

The Italian word for what you feel reading that is agita.

  • The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ’skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.
