New in Jewcy: Stephen Schwartz on Ashkenazi Ignorance

In the final e-mail of this week’s Big Question, Stephen Suleyman Schwartz has a go at Ashkenazi ignorance and says it’s time to turn back to our Sephardic heritage.

I remember with great distaste an editor of a leading Jewish journal telling me his paper had published enough on Sephardim and would not be interested in anything more about them. Another editor at the same paper told me the Sephardim daven without knowing the meaning of the words.

In my defense, I was upset at the time because I'd just learned that Sephardim eat rice during Passover. That's cheating. And Tahl was disoriented because he'd just seen a 12 year-old in a big, crazy kippah reading the Zohar.

Stephen also dabbles in a little alternative history: if the British and French empires had kept their grubby colonial mitts off the Middle East, would Israelis and Arabs today be exchanging effusive greetings and those awful, sugary pastries, rather than katyushas and cluster bombs?

Have a read.
