Former Russian premier Yegor Gaidar has fallen violently ill in Ireland, just a week after ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko succumbed to radiation poisoning in London. Everyone more or less concedes that it was Vladimir Putin who gave the slithery go-ahead for a mini-Chernobyl infusion into one of his most outspoken critics and former intelligence comrade. You can't come of age as a Stalinist spy in Hamburg and Bonn without realizing that sooner or later, everyone who ever held your job must be liquidated:

Mr Gaidar is now in a stable condition at an undisclosed Moscow hospital, undergoing tests. In a telephone interview with the FT, Mr Gaidar said the doctors had so far been unable to identify the cause of the violent vomiting and bleeding that he suffered during a conference in Ireland.

I'm sure it's nothing. Just your normal, seasonal case of Bubonic plague.
