A teenager in Midland, Michigan shot his ex-girlfriend four times outside her high school yesterday morning before committing suicide. Teachers urged students to carry on as usual, despite buzz circulating about the shooting in the form of cell phones ringing non-stop.

An announcement at the end of the school day informed students that a student was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The announcement also said no activities would be canceled, including a boys' basketball tournament game that was to be played Wednesday night.

Justin Frost, 18, a senior at nearby Midland High School, takes a class at Dow High and was on his way there when he said he saw emergency responders and person lying near a vehicle in the parking lot.

"It looked like (the person) was underneath the vehicle. It looked like somebody had hit somebody (with a car). I got into school and found out somebody had been shot," he said.

More than 1,500 students attend Dow High, which is named after the Dow Chemical Co. founder.

Shocked students said they never thought a shooting could happen in Midland, a city of more than 41,000 that has benefited over the years from the good-paying jobs and corporate generosity of Dow Chemical and Dow Corning Corp. The city also is known for striking architecture, gardens and museums.

Last I checked violence wasn't a function of social class, economic status or striking architecture, for that matter.
