I'm here because I have a Loved One in Jewish Rehab. It has caused me to think harder about being a Jew. I still don't believe in god, but I'm enjoying the services and the feeling of being part of a community.
My husband recently remarked, "This Jew thing is really taking over," as I was getting ready to drive to the rehab place. I was able to enjoy the hostility of his statement, because that's the way I roll. When I repeated it to my Shrink, he smiled and replied, "Isn't that what Hitler said?" (My Shrink is an athiest Jew, too.)
Rehab seems like a leap of faith, just like religion. The addicts I've met so far are much warmer and relaxed than than most people I encounter elsewhere. Maybe it's because all they have to deal with is staying sober. Regular daily life is so stressful and irritating. If only I could become an alcoholic!
