Yom Kippur in San Francisco
Tell us who you are and we’ll tell you where to go.

The Hippie: Dreadlocks and Bagels
What:
Yom Kippur services with special speaker Cindy Sheehan, followed by vegetarian potluck break-fast
When: Saturday, September 22, 9 AM
Where: St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1111 O'Farell St.
Why: This might just be the ultimate hippie Yom Kippur set-up: Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun, leads a service featuring anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. Part of an emerging movement of Jewish Renewal, Congregation Beyt Tikkun believes in equality regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or religious faith. The service will focus on being spiritually alive and experiencing the transformative power of the High Holy Days. As if it couldn't get any better, the whole thing wraps up with a potluck vegetarian break-fast.

The Hipster: Way Too Cool for Hebrew School
What:
Screening of West Bank Story
When: Tuesday, September 25, 7 PM
Where: Red Poppy Art House, 2698 Folsom St
Why: A dose of indie film will resuscitate you after all of that trance-inducing Yom Kippur call and response. The Oscar-winning West Bank Story is a musical comedy set in the fast-paced, fast-food world of competing falafel and shawarma stands in the West Bank. The special screening will be followed by a Q&A with Yuval Ron, the composer of the film's score, and a live performance by the Yuval Ron trio.

The Beshert Seeker: Something Old, Something Newish, Something Borrowed, Something Jewish
What: Spiritual Singles Kol Nidre service
When: Friday, September 21, 8 PM
Where: OneTaste Urban Retreat Center, 1074 Folsom St
Why: A little touch of mysticism could be just what your love life needs. Renew your spirit, transform your world, and recharge for another year of JDating. The Ayn Sof Spiritual Singles Kol Nidre service aims to help you reflect, rejuvenate, and radiate with fellow Beshert seekers by your side.

The Nouveau Jew: Better Late Than Never?
What: High Holiday preparation lecture
When:
Tuesday, September 18, 7:30 PM
Where: RTC-Chabad, 423 10th Ave
Why: Are you prepared for Yom Kippur? What about Sukkot and Simchat Torah? Rabbi Hecht will help you get there with a comprehensive High Holiday lecture beginning with "Yom Kippur: Transforming Sin into Virtue," and followed by "Sukkot: Bringing Serenity to an Age of Anxiety," and "Simchat Torah: The Joys of Being Jewish."

The Super-Jew: You've Got the Spirit, Yes You Do!
What:
Gardening for the Hungry
When: Sunday, September 23, 10 AM
Where: Home of Peace Cemetery, 1299 El Camino Real, Colma
Why: Because it'll bring back memories of that summer you spent on a Kibbutz in Israel. Rise and shine the morning after Yom Kippur to work the land with Congregation Emanu-El in their volunteer-run Pe-ah Garden. Your work will benefit the San Francisco Food Bank, and you’ll meet people and do a mitzvah at the same time. The best part is that the garden work continues through November, so you and that green thumb of yours can keep on coming back.

The Intellectual: Smarter Than Jew
What: Jewface: Vaudeville's Forgotten Hebrew Comedians
When:
Monday, September 24, 8 PM
Where: Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California St
Why: That mega-brain of yours might be crammed with facts, but how much do you know about turn-of-the-century Jewish minstrelsy? Explore the obscure world of “Jewface”vaudeville acts by Jews, for Jews, lampooning Jews in ways that would warm an antisemite’s heartat this lecture by Slate music critic and Friend of Jewcy Jody Rosen.

The Alterna-Parent: Day Care and Dinner Parties
What: Tot Yontif
When:
Saturday, September 22, 10:30 AM
Where: Congregation Adath Israel, 1851 Noriega St
Why: Because puppets and magic are a heck of a lot more interesting than that same old Dora the Explorer video your kids want to watch over and over again. Let Joan Sutton, Mimi Greisman, and Rabbi Joshua Strulowitz delight your children with an interactive Yom Kippur service. Their antics will include and entertain the whole family through Jewish stories, drama, puppets and magic.
