Why:We know, you wouldn’t be caught dead at a drum circle, but the hippie-friendly Mitzuit Jewish community in East Rogers Park also happens to be as indie as it gets: non-denominational with a DIY approach. Their erev Rosh HaShanah services are inclusive, participatory, and relaxed, with lots of music, sacred Hebrew chants, meaningful Torah teachings and ancient spirituality.

Temple Sholom and Maot Chitim wants to help those in need celebrate the New Year with dignity. They need your help preparing, packing, and delivering more than 12,000 food packages around the city. Be there bright and early.

The Nouveau Jew: Better Late Than Never?
What: Free Chabadnik Rosh Hashanah services
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7 PM through September 14
Where: The Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th Street
Why: The Chabad Jewish Center at the University of Chicago and Hyde Park are offering explanatory Rosh Hashanah services with no fees, no tickets, no reservations, and no appeals. Not only that, but you can join them for a delicious holiday dinner or two, as well. The meals are free for students, and other community members are welcome to dine for a minimum suggested donation of $18. Evening services are followed up with dinner, morning services, shofar services, and Taschlich at The Point.
