The Hippie: Dreadlocks and Bagels

Jewish Drum Circle
When: Sunday, September 9, 2 PM
Where: North Lakeside Cultural Center, on Sheridan Rd just north of Granville
Why:Grab your bongos and tambourines and join Mitziut for an afternoon of chanting, drumming and singing as you prepare to welcome Rosh Hashana. An independent, non-denominational Jewish spiritual community, Mitziut encourages you to slip off your shoes for this Jewish drum circle—that is, if you arrive wearing any.

 

 


The Hipster: Way too Cool for Hebrew School

Erev Rosh Hashanah services at an indie shul
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7:30 PM
Where: Mitziut, 1545 W. Morse Avenue
Why:We know, you wouldn’t be caught dead at a drum circle, but the hippie-friendly Mitzuit Jewish community in East Rogers Park also happens to be as indie as it gets: non-denominational with a DIY approach. Their erev Rosh HaShanah services are inclusive, participatory, and relaxed, with lots of music, sacred Hebrew chants, meaningful Torah teachings and ancient spirituality.


 

 

The Beshert Seeker: Something Old, Something Newish, Something Borrowed, Something Jewish

Feeding the hungry

Where: Maot Chitim Warehouse, 8220 N. Austin, Morton Grove
Why:What better way to meet that someone special than while engaged in tikkun olam—and bathed in that flattering morning light? Temple Sholom and Maot Chitim wants to help those in need celebrate the New Year with dignity. They need your help preparing, packing, and delivering more than 12,000 food packages around the city. Be there bright and early.

 

 

The Nouveau Jew: Better Late Than Never?
What:
Free Chabadnik Rosh Hashanah services
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7 PM through September 14
Where: The Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th Street
Why: The Chabad Jewish Center at the University of Chicago and Hyde Park are offering explanatory Rosh Hashanah services with no fees, no tickets, no reservations, and no appeals. Not only that, but you can join them for a delicious holiday dinner or two, as well. The meals are free for students, and other community members are welcome to dine for a minimum suggested donation of $18. Evening services are followed up with dinner, morning services, shofar services, and Taschlich at The Point.


The Super-Jew: You've Got Spirit, Yes You Do!

Shabbat Sing-a-long
When: Friday, September 7, 7:15 PM
Where: 3751 North Broadway
Why:Join congregation Anshe Emet for...wait for it...a Camp Shabbat and Sing-a-long! Meet old friends and make some new ones too! Whether you were a camper or not, join the Young Adult Division of Anshe Emet Synagogue for their 5768 kick-off event. Participate in services, a free dinner, and of course, waxing nostalgic by singing your favorite songs from camp.


 

The Intellectual: Smarter Than Jew

Why:Hey smartypants, the Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism would love for you to join them on September 13 for a second day Rosh Hashanah study session and service. Go on and teach 'em a thing or two.
