My partner Arnold and I are busy redesigning our online publication, the Gantseh Megillah. What a job! After 8 years and one face lift, it became apparent that we really needed to bring our site and its technology into the more modern realm.
We have a couple thousand subscribers many of whom have become a big family. As a matter of fact, I aways refer to our subscribers as being members of my Megillah Family. This was the original concept. I wanted to find a way to bring Jewish people, from all over the world to a central location where they can read the thoughts, ideas, stories etc of other Jewish people. You know, sorta what Jewcy is doing. But we are not looking to compete with Jewcy, which is a wonderful Web site unto itself, and of which I am proud to be a member.
The Gantseh Megillah is more of a pleasant, relaxing area where one can read the articles by our team of writers, some of whom are totally professional and others who write as a hobby. All of them are purely volunteers. This is how it has become such a family effort, because no one is in it to make money. I have nothing against making money, and to tell the truth, we are now expanding into the area of commercial viability.
The trick at this point is to maintain the free membership policy; the friendly, haimish and relaxing atmosphere, but to attract businesses who want to reach such an audience. Most of our readers are not in the bloom of youth, shall I say. Whereas Jewcy does seem to appeal to the younger, professional crowd, I would have to state that our membership consists mostly of middle age and above people. The emphasis in less on action and partying, and more about reflection, a slower yet sincere desire to facilitate change as well as to passing on our knowledge to others. I don't really think I am explaining this all to clearly, and for this I apologize. Thankfully this is a blog and not an article, or as an editor, I would be peeing all over this dreck I am writing at the moment.
I'll be back in a couple of days, hopefully with a more coherent report on the direction we are heading. I just feel better being able to get some of my thoughts off my chest today.
Be well my friends,
Michael
