DAILY SHVITZ
Masada2000 and Jewish Cyber-Bully Culture

Everyone knows the internet can be a nasty place. Foul language, hate, invective, inanity, you name it. But what's less known is that the Jewish web can be equally nasty. We Jews have a reputation for being disputatious and the internet is no exception. I've been blogging for nearly five years. People have wished cancer on me, called for me to be raped by Arabs and killed by "righteous Jews," called my children "simian," claimed I taught them to manufacture Palestinian suicide bombs, etc.

And as a recent Jewish Forward article points out, I'm not the only one. There are Jewish cyber-bullies everywhere:

Orthomom.blogspot.com, which covers Long Island’s Orthodox Jewish communities, was the subject of a recent lawsuit brought by a local elected official who charges that she was slandered on the blog. Last February, the official, Pamela Greenbaum, who serves on board of education in Lawrence, N.Y., filed a lawsuit in a New York state court in an attempt to force Google, whose subsidiary hosts the blog, to reveal Orthomom’s identity. Greenbaum claims that she was called a “bigot” and an “antisemite” on the blog.

In response to Greenbaum’s lawsuit, Public Citizen, a national public interest group that has played a lead role in defending free speech on the Internet, rushed in to defend Orthomom and filed a motion to quash. A decision in the case is still pending.

When Chaim Rubin of Life of Rubin defended Orthomom one of his commenters began berating him for his support of her. The going got nasty and Chaim banned him. The commenter decided to get even and created a blog called Ploni Baloney solely devoted to mocking Chaim. While he believes he knows the identity of the anonymous blogger he has no solid proof. That's precisely the problem with cyber-bullies. They are obsessed to the point of mania. But they prefer to lurk in dark, slimy places.

Steven Plaut is another Jewish cyber-bully who sees it as his role in life to protect the Jewish people from anyone who's ever voiced any criticism of Israel. As Rebecca Spence wrote in The Forward:

In 2006, Neve Gordon, a dovish politics professor at Ben-Gurion University, launched a civil suit against Steven Plaut, a hawkish professor at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Haifa, for referring to him in an article published online as a “fanatic anti-Semite” and a “Judenrat wannabe,” among other slurs. Plaut lost and had to pay more than $18,000 in fines to Gordon. Plaut is now appealing the case.

Sharon in drag under the caption: "America's bitch whore"But there is one website that is the sine qua non of Jewish cyber-bullydom. Masada2000 has everything: naked men, dildos, Ariel Sharon in drag, Michael Lerner half-naked in a bath tub, and 7,000 Jews on the S.H.I.T. list. Who could ask for more? What is Masada20000 you ask? It's a strange beast run by someone who conceals his identity behind the moniker Big Al. Big Al is angry in the same way Meir Kahane was angry. Angry at Jewish peaceniks, the Fifth Column of the Jewish people. And doubly angry at perfidious Arabs. Masada2000 has a fetish for what I call Jewish porn. It's obssessed by homosexuality and Nazism. Jews on the S.H.I.T. (Self-Hating and Israel-Threatening Jews) are 'fags,' kapos' and 'Judenrats.' It's as if the site owner absorbed the poison the Nazis spewed against Jews and become what he hates--a Jewish Nazis.

If you're an enemy of the Jewish people in their book, you clearly deserve no privacy and the List often displays images of victims and their private e mail addresses.

I have a personal confession to make. I am on the S.H.I.T. List. In fact, when one of the site's 'friends' or perhaps the owner himself notified me of my "membership" I began a campaign to get the site taken down. Besides the fact that it featured an image of me that I owned and thus violated my copyright, I thought that any site that said that Jewish female peace activists "deserved a good reaming" deserved to be reamed itself. When their webhost took the site down they moved it to a Mormon webhost who didn't seem to mind nudity and lots of F-words directed at "sand niggers" and the like.

Ultimately I failed. No matter how many examples I provided to Bluehost of multiple blatant violations of their Terms of Service, they preferred Masada2000's loot to common decency. But I'm pleased to say that where I failed, someone else succeeded. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how Masada2000 was brought down since I don't want to let any of its friends in on the secret.

No doubt, you'll read in the comment section below some Kahanewannabe pledging that 'Masada2000 will live forever' and such like. Perhaps. But making life tougher for those who spew hate is truly a mitzvah. And to the site's supporters I say, please don't talk to me about freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not allow you to violate the law or invade the privacy of thousands of victims by printing their e mail addresses. Besides, when the site has been taken down it has not been because of its political speech, but rather because it violated the host's Terms of Service or violated other provisions that regulate websites (sorry for being so vague). There are many other websites that present a Jewish nationalist perspective without breaking laws and invading privacy.

Miriam Felton Dansky also wrote about Masada2000 in Flack-Listed at New Voices.

I am a Jewish blogger living in Seattle with my wife, three children and dog. I write in Tikun Olam about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Jewish culture, religion and music. I've also created Israel

Hypocrisy

Sounds like Masada2000 is just using their fifth amendment rights, which you oppose. One would think that a liberal blogger such as yourself would support Masada2000's right to criticize, however offensive you may find that criticism, which you term cyberbullying. I'm sure that plenty of your opponents would term your commentary the same way.

Anonymous

can't agree with you....

I'd been aware of Masada2000, having stumbled upon it a couple of years ago. It was an odious, semi-literate effusion of mental illness, repugnant to anyone with a shred of decency.

But your delight in its having been pulled is short-sighted. You say, "To the site's supporters, I say please don't talk to me about freedom of speech". This is an interesting comment, since it suggests that only partisans of the site's content would be concerned about the freedom of speech issue here.

Is your notion that publicizing email addresses is actionable a legally informed one? And hiding behind the "terms of service" argument avoids the deeper issue of how much control over content hosting services should permit themselves.

Finally, being coy about how the site was taken down won't do. It is only by seeing the specifics that one can determine if he or she is on board with the action. Shall we take your word for it?

For someone who made such an eloquent (and correct) argument against Shin Bet's preposterous "trust us, we know he did bad things but we can't tell you the details" persecution of Azmi Bishara, I'm surprised to find you relying on a similar ploy here.

Hackneyed as it may sound, it is precisely the beliefs we find most noxious whose expression we must defend, as the ACLU lawyers who defended the Skokie nazis understood. A democrat must never take comfort in the official silencing of an opinion, no matter how deranged.

richards1052

Masada2000 is just using

Masada2000 is just using their fifth amendment rights

I take it you meant "First Amendment" unless you were inferring they had the right not to incriminate themselves (which the very content of their website does for them).

it suggests that only partisans of the site's content would be concerned about the freedom of speech issue here.

In fact, you are one of the very few of perhaps 100 comments written on this subject at my blog who takes a pro-civil liberties/anti-hate perspective. Every other commenter using the free speech rationale is a rabid supporter of the site. I'm not saying yr perspective isn't legitimate. Just that it's rare.

Is your notion that publicizing email addresses is actionable

That was imprecise of me. Such odious tactics are usually banned by web hosts terms of service. And they are gross invasions of privacy. Though they may not be illegal. But why should the standard only be whether something is illegal? Isn't privacy a worthy principle worthy defending? And why have you omitted issues I raised which are actual violations of law like copyright violation and indirect threats of violence against women?

hiding behind the "terms of service" argument avoids the deeper issue of how much control over content hosting services should permit themselves.

Are you arguing that webhosts should not have be able to review content to determine whether it adheres to their policies? Look, if I want to post really odious content & don't want a webhost looking over my shoulder there are lots of ways to escape scrutiny. But to argue that a host shouldn't have the ability to monitor & suspend the bad eggs seems over the top.

being coy about how the site was taken down won't do. It is only by seeing the specifics that one can determine if he or she is on board with the action. Shall we take your word for it?

Much as I'd like to satisfy yr curiousity or whatever it is, the Kahanists have become my camp followers reading much of what I write. I'd rather disappoint you than tell them stuff they might not already know. Masada2000's owner is obssessed with protecting his privacy and in this case it did his site in (until he figures out how to revive it). I can't say more here.

it is precisely the beliefs we find most noxious whose expression we must defend,

You neglect my statement that there are many extremist uber-Zionist sites on the web which express their opinions w/o managing to violate laws, people's privacy, or calling for violence against their opponents. I have no problem with that. You yourself admit that the content of the site is an "effusion of mental illness," which is very well-said. In this day and age, do we not realize that it is from precisely this sort of violent, aberrant personality that actual violence often derives? I don't want to throw the guy in a mental hospital. But I do want to make it as hard as possible for him to disseminate his fevered rantings.

Yep, that was a typo on my part which I noticed as soon as the comment was posted. In hindsight, I should have pressed the preview button first and not posted anonymously. Unfortunately there is no edit feature (for good reasons probably) in the comments section on Jewcy.

That is not an excuse to gloss over my criticism of you that as a supposed liberal blogger you are acting fairly hypocritically in trying to silence the opinion of one of your opponents. And in doing so it is you who is engaging in the 'cyber-bullying'.

If you hate us 95% of Jews, who support and identify strongly with the Jewish state and real Lefty Jews like Habonim Dror types, and not those hiding behind a `lefty Jewish` persona which actually has a Naturei Karta type of Philosophy ,loved by the extreme right wing and Leftwing as useful idiots, then leave our tribe please.

Hey QJ

How's tricks?

I can understand your anger at Richard. Masada2000 was one of your favorite sites to link to when you posted at democraticunderground (before you got kicked off that is).

I imagine it hurts to have a valuable resource like that taken down.

Valuable to kahanists and jdl wannabes that is.

Oh well, you'll always have prosemiteundercover.

Haters welcome!!

Colorado Blue

At least spell our name right.

Prosemite Undercover's address is:

http://prosemiteundercover.phpbbnow.com/index.php

And no, we're not real fond of Mr. Silverstein, with all due respect.

Why? Because we don't feel there's anything helpful about his attacks on his fellow Jews.

We DO deplore bigotry, racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, misogyny, repressive governments, attacks on gay people, threats to the environment, people who exploit the poor and harm animals, and long for a peaceful resolution to the warfare in the Middle East.

For the most part we're liberal to far left, include several people who would fall into the Socialist category, and defend Israel BECAUSE of that and not in spite of it. The sad fact of the matter is, Israel has been wrongly portrayed as an overwhelmingly powerful Goliath when in fact it's a tiny, barely viable state of a mere 7 million highly diverse people, which exists at the whim of greater powers (and possibly by a series of miracles.)

People who are interested in finding solutions to problems, including the Arab/Israeli conflict, would do well to think creatively and try to build bridges rather than simply attacking and smearing other people. One of the saddest things about the Arab-Israeli conflict is the lack of realism combined with the lack of imagination and empathy in much commentary about the issue.

There is also an astonishing amount of real hatred expressed - how many comments do you see along the lines of "F*** Israel" or characterizations of Zionism straight out of the "Protocols"? Be honest - it's appalling. We've seen art straight out of der Sturmer, linked to "progressive" websites, and proudly displayed at "peace rallies."

With respect, how is this going to help either Israelis or Palestinians? Will it build bridges between Muslims and Jews? I think the opposite is more likely. In fact polarization between Judaism and Islam would be a very great tragedy, which ugly invective won't prevent. Only openhearted dialogue and an honest reading of history can change the future.

As for PSU, we started the site because we're deeply concerned about growing antisemitic sentiments and incidents, visible increasingly on the blogosphere and most alarmingly, on the Left. People ARE angry, angry and frightened, and concerned about our friends and relatives in Israel and elsewhere in the Middle East as well.

Actual antisemitic incidents - attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions - DOUBLED in my state in one year. Overtly religious Jews have been assaulted on the streets in my neighborhood and synagogues in my area have been defaced, damaged by fire, the offices of a Jewish politician vandalized. Incidents in Europe are increasing dramatically and portrayals of Jews in the Middle East, on TV, in books, in movies, in papers, are frighteningly similar to those from Nazi Germany.

Sadly, in America, we've grown used to judenhass on the far Right but to see it on the Left really scares and saddens us. Historically this particular form of bigotry has proven to be devastating, literally decimating the global Jewish population which today is still only around 14 million. That's some 2 million short of the pre WWII population.

And, it is impossible to separate classic judenhass from many of the attacks on contemporary Israel. They are inextricably linked, just as the establishment of Israel was linked both to Jewish historic and ongoing ties to the land of Israel, to antisemitism throughout the world, to the way Jews are personified throughout the Middle East, to the way Israel is demonized among nations, and to the general blindless of her critics to the larger context of the Middle East.

Israel was created in the wake of the Holocaust and survives today in a war zone, the target of Arab League boycotts, threats to destroy the state, endless bias on the part of the UN. Her citizens are essentially expected to sit quietly and be attacked by rockets and homicide bombers and kidnappers: any other response merits hysterical OTT reactions both in the media and among her "critics".

For example a person in Jerusalem attacked a security guard the other day, stole his gun, shot him and went on a rampage, hitting several other people, until he was finally killed. Headlines - initially in the BBC ("Palestinian killed in Jerusalem") and in the Arab press - did not indicate the nature of the attack at all but read "Palestinian Shot Dead by Israeli Guard in Old City of Jerusalem" (http://www.maannews.net/en/index.php?opr=ShowDetails&ID=24648) - this is hardly contributing to an atmosphere in which trust can be rebuilt and a viable Palestinian state created.

This is particularly true in view of the fact that much Arab thinking, from what I've gathered through extensive study, doesn't really accept the idea of ANY independent Jewish state, within any borders, anywhere in the Middle East, and is in fact closer to Hamas' philosophy than most American liberals want to admit. Culturally there IS a real gap in perception about Jews, about Israel, about Zionism, and again - only thoughtful, precise dialogue can bridge the gap - if at all.

The Saudi Peace initiative, on the surface a breakthrough deal, is actually phrased more along the lines of a threat and doesn't creatively address either border issues or the ROR, nor is the fact of Jewish refugees from the Arab world widely acknowledged in ANY forum; nor is there any creative thinking about the Palestinian Arab victims of 60 years of warfare either - nor about the roles played by the UN and other Arab states (and the Soviets, et.al.)in creating and perpetuating the refugees' situation; or about the fact that it is impossible to go backwards in time. Yet many around the world seem to want to do precisely that.

I think we need to go forwards. And to do that we need to start talking TO each other, not at each other, and we need, as Jews particularly, to stop beating ourselves up. The fact is clear and simple: Jews as a people remain a tiny and hated minority. We are not a nation of billions. We are a handful of people who share a remarkable diversity of opinion, but within that remarkably diverse and remarkably verbal group, we need to share some respect for our historically precarious position.

In any case, as far as PSU is concerned, people who wish harm to Israel and to the Jewish community, who lack creative ideas about solutions to vexing problems, will try to confuse us with those who hate, when in fact we stand for the opposite. But we do reserve OUR First Amendment rights to complain about the demonization of Israel, about innaccurate reporting, and about antisemitism, intentional or otherwise.

I suggest that anybody wanting to comment about us, please read all through all the forums thoroughly, visit the library and the favorite blogs list, study the Middle Eastern political and arts forums and human rights forums, and then form an opinion.

Thank you.

Which attacks on my fellow Jews? You mean Masada2000? This is something you actually defend? That's rich. And you defend calling for Jewish women to be "reamed?" This type of hateful abuse is not something worth criticizing?

No doubt Colorado Blue is the same person who has linked in at least 4 comments at Jewcy to a pornographic site created by the owner of Masada2000 which defames me. If you're not doing this then do deny it. Someone else in this thread seems to think you are as well. It appears when some Kahanists smear their fellow Jews they do it behind a mask of anonymity, hence using "Anonymous."  That's why Masada2000's owner conceals his own identity so he can smear 7,000 fellow Jews fr. behind a veil of hate.  At least when I attack a Jewish hater I don't hide behind anonymity.

You like to call yourself a "progressive Zionist" yet I challenge you to post some examples of that from your pathetic blog.  Kind of reminds me of putting lipstick on a pig etc.  Sorry, that lipstick fails to hide your bitterness and hatred of the State of Israel.

Jewish cyber bully culture

I couldn't think of a better representation of Jewish cyber-bully culture than the comments above.   When I read the comment that predicted I'd be sentenced to jail for treason I realized that Kahane chai! --Kahane does indeed 'live' in the hate preached by sites like Masada2000, the other cesspool sites linked above & the filth preached by Gabyspoppy & Anonymous Coward in comments above.

I don't know that Masada2000 is down forever as another commenter wrote above. I'd like to think so. But undoubtedly where hate and passionate conviction intersect they'll be a will & a way to get it up again.

It would be nice to know that even those Jews & Jewcy readers who disagree w. my views might disown the hate preached here. Let's see if that happens.

`Hate Sites`

Are scurrillously labelled so by those whos views they disagree with.

There`s nothing unusual about Prosemite undercover, and the views expressed there are mainstream Jewish views.
At PSU the people there `take on` mainly the David Duke`s of the world and their antisemitic supporters ,who cloak themselves as `progressives`.
They also take on a few Jews who seem to be in cahoots with this anti Jewish crowd..wittingly or unwittingly.

If ProSemiteUndercover is a hate site...then the views of the vast Majority of world Jewry is probably scurrulously considered HATE by you antisemites and the handful of Jews cheering you on.

Take a look at Democraticunderground for example .
The vast ,vast majority of people supporting Israel there, are Jews.

The anti Israel/anti Jewish crowd there ,are not...with one or two exceptions , such as Silverstein...
But the vast majority of that crowd are not even Democratic party supporters , and not even Palistinian or Muslims...the only thing that attracts them to the debate...is ...

.....Jews...............and their dislike of us.

GabysPoppy

Cassandra

Read it for yourself if you have any doubts.  Rabbi Michael Lerner a person I hardly agree with said something very poignant which I do fully agree with.  I paraphrase:

Criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitic in itself however when you come across a person who only criticizes Israel you are most likely dealing with an anti-Semite.

Now I do not like the term "self hating Jew" as a description and prefer to use the term kapo which is more fitting and especially in this case.  I have repeatedly asked this person to point out portions of his blog which is not critical or demonizing of Israel and he refuses to do so.  Why do you think that is?  Probably because he can't do it and I am correct in my labeling him as such.

So call him whatever you choose for yourself.  I think Rabbi Lerner's definition meets all the requirements here and you can hardly call Rabbi Lerner a right wing loon.

Anonymous

"Rabbi" Michael Lerner

Let's clarify something. Lerner is not and never was a Rabbi, was never ordained by any Rabbinical seminary, is not accepted as a Rabbi even by the Reform, essentially ordained himself, knows absolutely nothing about Judaism, does not practice Judaism, advocates taking LSD and breaking the law, is anti-Israel and pro-al-Qaida, has an endless track record of lies.

Almost as bad as Little Dickie Silverstein.

Treason is an act of betrayal or a crime against a person's own country. Is criticism of Bush treason? Of course not. Is criticism of Israel by a citizen of another country treason? Even less so.

Cassandra

I've repeatedly asked you for specific links to back up your claim that Richard is a Kapo. You have refused to do so and I have no choice but to come to the conclusion from reading your replies and after reading Richard's blog that you have no examples to show. Even worse than that is that you think it is okay to abuse Richard and call him a Kapo because he is critical of Israel. Why do you believe that criticism of Israel makes someone an anti-semite or a Kapo? Do you have an aversion to people being critical of the US as well?

Anonymous

Cassandra's "mind" is closed - Refuses to see Kapoism

Well, if Silverstein's endless whoring for neo-Nazis like Norman Finkelstein is not enough, if his endorsements of terrorist spies like Bishara are not enough, if his grovelling endorsements of the Neo-Nazi Counterpunch web site are not enough, if his daily campaigns for granting tenure to jihad terrorists and anti-Semites are not enough, if his attacks on any Jew who thinks Israel has the right to exist are not enough, then nothing will convince "Cassandra". She/he will argue that when Silverstein rounds up Jews to be put in concentration camps run by his jihad friends - he is doing so to express his criticism of Israeli foreign policy.

Time for you to crawl back into your hole and stopping making yourself looking more of a fool.

Richard Silverstein lies

The example he provides is not an example of cyberbullying.

This is from the NCPC website which fights cyberbullying:

"Online bullying, called cyberbullying, happens when teens use the Internet, cell phones, or other devices to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person. Cyberbullying is a problem affecting almost half of all American teens. Whether you’ve been a victim of cyberbullying, know someone who has been cyberbullied, or have even cyberbullied yourself, there are steps you and your friends can take to stop cyberbullying and stay cyber-safe."

What Richard Silverstein is doing is defaming his critics by refering to them as incorrectly as cyberbullies, as if they were committing a crime. It is a cheap, lame attempt at deflecting one's critics. It also is a McCarthyite tactic of trying to silence the opposition, which is quite hypocritical considering the source.

PSU is a front for right wing hate

It's one thing to be proud of one's Jewish heritage and/or have legitmate concerns about anti-semitism. However, the PSU site is not about that.

It is about furthering the Likudist propaganda that ANY opposition whatsoever to the polices and actions of the Israeli government, no matter how criminal, psychotic and fascist they may be, is equal to anti-semitism. Furthermore, the PSU trolls even imply that those who DO oppose Likud Zionfascism are the equivalent of David DuKKKe or Nazi Skinheads.

For the record, I support a two state solution. Israel and Palestine BOTH have a right to exist. I despise the Likud party of Israel, just as I oppose the neoconservative "Republicans" in the US. Both serve the exact same interest. It was neocon Jews with ties to the Likud government who wrote the fascist PNAC war agenda ( Perle, Wolfowitz, Feith, Wuermser, Podhoretz, Kristol, and others, though they were certainly accompanied by the corporatist "Christian" fascists like Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld. In no way does this make all Jews or all Christians guilty, but the truth CANNOT be ignored about those who are responsible. And there's nothing "anti-semitic" about saying so.

And AIPAC has far too much influence in our government. They aren't the only dangerously powerful lobby, but they ARE the only one who directly advocates the interests of a foreign nation at the expense of the United States.

Palestine has never existed!

Why are there so many fucking ignorant people when it comes to the history of Israel? THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PALESTINIAN COUNTRY! The term Palestine is not Arabic in orgin and is what Israel was renamed thousands of years ago. Anyone who lived in Palestine was called Palestinian including the Jews. Arabs have created a false country and people. It's all lies.

No to a two-state solution! Arabs already have more than twenty states, many which are occupying Jewish land, like Jordan which was carved out of the Jewish homeland.

The anti-semitic idiot above has no concept of reality and needs to go back to school. Your interest is supporting Arab Islamic terrorists who want to destroy Israel and America.

trollbusters

I think you should just leave off the busters part of your id, and leave it at troll. Anti-semitic troll that is. Glad to see you agree with a two state solution, something I agree with as well. But the rest of your rant is a collection of anti-semitic hyperbole which would have made Hitler proud. The Jewishness of some neocons is irrelevant much as the Christianity of the others. Is Bush Jewish? Cheney? Colin Powell? Condoleeza Rice?

Your logic is the same as that of the Nazi's who like to blame Jews for the rise of Communism. Sure there were some key Jewish intellectuals involved, but Jews are a successful, intelligent minority so that shouldn't come as any surprise. No movement is ever going to suceed as a Jewish movement. Blaming the Jews, something you clearly do, is plain old anti-semitic rubbish and intellectual sloppyness.
