i like the medium... it says something beyond its words and pictures, in its impact.  but i also quarrelled with some of the implicit stereotypes...

For sure, at some very basic level connected to independence and the army, Israelis carry themselves more confidently than Jews in America or elsewhere in the galut. Confidence is attractive.

i reduced things down very flat for this essay, indeed. the subject matter was just too big (jewish history, diaspora studies, mideast relations, media studies) to tackle all at once. i set out to talk about images & icons over nuanced reality. stereotypes may not be real, but the power they wield over us is.....

i made this piece in part to be quarreled with. so thanks!

Being from a multiethnic Jewish culture, Israelis (especially the non-Haredi soldiers) aren't inbred like Diasporan Jews. They also aren't as fat as American Jews, who suffer like anyone else from their country's obesity problems.

Combine those two factors and you can pretty much explain why Diasporan Jews think Israelis are hot.

Having just returned from Israel eariler this week I'd have to say that my most recent assistment of why Israelis or for that matter Israel itself is so cool its hot is the anything goes attitude. Whether its riding your scooter like Marrio through the streets of Tel Aviv or your hair like it was meant to be... you know, in those beautiful dred Lox that American Jews are too self concious to grow out. Israelis are basically OK with themselves... everything is sababa.

What can I say it's true. Israeli are hot. There's something in the milk and honey....!!!

I read in 'Maxim' (an unimpeachably authoritative source on the subject of hotness) that Israel ranks second among world travelers for how hot the people are. (Brazil is number one.  I guess I can't complain.)

As was pointed out, heterogenous mixture of people/races from all over the world seems to create a healthy mix of beautiful people.  The reunion of diaspora Jews from Morocco to Yemen to Tashkent to Holland to Ethiopia has indeed produced quite a colorful species of beautiful Jew.

I'm so sick of this 'Israelis are oppressing the Palestinians' propaganda.

Israelis are trying to defend a tiny island of democracy in an ocean of racist people who to this day have as their stated goal to "drive all the jews into the sea"

Stopping your racist neighbors from blowing up your children isn't oppression, its self-defense.

It's in-group exoticism, isn't it? A way to be "transgressive" within acceptable communal limits. How about another topic: what is the Israeli impression of North American Jews, sexually and otherwise? I'm sure for the soldiers the words "naive" and "easy lay" come into play.
