Why Are White Folks Hating On Michelle Obama?

Hint: they'd like her better if she were an African immigrant

As Michelle Obama continues her "make-over" tour, jumping from an appearance on The View's coffee klatch to the cover of glossy Us Weekly (story title: "Why Barack Loves Her"), it's clear that we haven't really progressed much in the past two decades. Educated, outspoken, potential first-ladies frighten Americans today as much as they did when "scary feminist" Hillary Rodham Clinton first blazed the path from the corner office to the campaign trail.

Voters are suspicious of influential spouses—period (think Eleanor Roosevelt or Bill Clinton during the primaries). Still, every election is different and this one has the special spice of race. Though Barack Obama is the first black candidate on a major party ticket, he has one advantage that his wife does not—he's the bi-racial son of an African immigrant, while she is the daughter of African-American parents descended from slaves. And research demonstrates that white people tend to favor black immigrants over African Americans whose ancestors have been here for hundreds of years.

Prominent researchers like Nancy Foner, George Fredrickson, and Mary Waters, who study the integration patterns of black immigrants, have observed that white people seem more at ease with black immigrants than they do with other African Americans. Their research notes that black immigrants are usually described as "more polite, less hostile, more solicitous, and easier to get along with." Some of this is likely due to real cultural or socioeconomic differences (for example, Africans who immigrate to the U.S. tend to be highly educated, on average). However, there's no getting around the fact that we live in a country with a profound history of racial turmoil and that prejudice against African Americans persists in contemporary society.

The "preference" for black immigrants over other African Americans is perhaps most pronounced on our nation's prestigious college campuses, where a controversial debate has erupted about the overrepresentation of black students from immigrant backgrounds (as opposed to those whose ancestors have been here for hundreds of years). In the February 2007 issue of the American Journal of Education, researchers at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania published findings from surveys given to 1,051 black freshmen at 28 selective colleges. They found that 27 percent of African-American students were first or second generation immigrants, which is more than double the national average for all blacks ages 18-19. The percentage of immigrants was even more pronounced at the four Ivy League schools included in this study (Princeton, Yale, Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania), where 41 percent of students were first or second generation immigrants. These numbers do not include international students who identify as black.

Why are black immigrants so overrepresented on selective campuses? While it's true that black immigrants are more likely to have higher grades and test scores (as I noted, their parents tend to be more educated), the authors of the study also conclude that admissions officers may be subconsciously selecting applicants with the "sociable qualities" that they more readily perceive in immigrants over other African-American students. We can't be certain of the degree to which this bias may play a role in college admissions decisions, but it's also hard to ignore previous research that demonstrates that white people find black immigrants more "likeable."

In researching my book, Fat Envelope Frenzy, I followed five different students navigating the selective college admissions process. One of the students was Ethiopian-American, grappling with the implications of his heritage on affirmative action policies. He often talked about how he couldn't relate to the other African-American students at his Memphis high school, but he also emphasized that he didn't think that race was such a big deal. "When was the last time someone was awarded a Nobel Prize because of their race?" he once asked me, rhetorically.

If only it were that simple. It would be nice if science was objective, but the ugly truth is that scientists have contributed to racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and every other possible prejudice throughout history. Sure, no one is given a Nobel Prize simply because they are white, black or brown. But that didn't stop James Watson, who won the Nobel for his work on DNA, from claiming that black people are "less intelligent" than white people just last year.

Though Barack Obama has suffered his fair share of background-based biased attacks (He's a Muslim! He hates Jews! He'll let Iran nuke Israel!), until the Jeremiah Wright hullabaloo, he was thought of as "not black" or "not black enough." Even with her two Ivy League degrees and Jackie O hair-do, there was never that kind of debate over Michelle's racial identity. The barely restrained racism directed at her in the press is practically old news, from the covert conspiracy theories of "respectable" writers like Christopher Hitchens—who basically blamed Michelle for the Wright controversy because she wrote her 1985 Princeton undergraduate thesis about "Princeton Educated Blacks and the Black Community"—to the total tackiness of Fox News referring to her as Barack's "baby mama."

With her South Side upbringing and dark complexion, Michelle is "black enough"—unlike her husband—and maybe that's part of the reason that she isn't as popular.

every other possible prejudice

"It would be nice if science was objective, but the ugly truth is that
scientists have contributed to racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and every
other possible prejudice throughout history."

Right on! In an article framed tacitly by misogyny as well as by racism, please note that Watson won that Nobel Prize after breaking into the laboratory of Jewish scientist Rosalind Franklin and stealing her x-ray diffraction photographs, which provided the very first evidence that DNA is helical.

She was ousted from her position and dissuaded from continuing work with DNA a month before Watson and Crick's groundbreaking paper was published. The Nobel Committee waited until four years after her death to grant the prize to Watson and Crick.

Jeffrey Weaver

Please!

Michelle Obama is not popular simply because she comes off as superior and humorless, much like Hillary Clinton when she first came to public light. You are being dense to not see that it is the same problem that many men in politics have had as well. Look at Dukakis, his lack of humor and demeanor turned off America as much as his policies, same for John Kerry. Americans like jovial people in office, not severe cranks. Michelle Obama needs to lighten up. (it would help if she acted as if she actually liked this country). To make this an issue of sex or race is demeaning to you and people that are rubbed the wrong way by abrasive Michelle.

Joie Jager-Hyman

Don't Blame Me

Thanks for weighing in, Jeffrey, but I don't think I'm solely responsible for making this issue about gender and race.  As I say in the piece, I think that prominent members of the media (Hutchens, the Fox News person who used the words "baby mama") beat me to it.  Fair enough if you think Michelle is a "severe crank" and that she doesn't act like she likes this country.  You are definitely entitled to like or dislike her for reasons other than her race or background.

Jeffrey Weaver

Joie,

I did sound severe - I am sorry. You are right, I dislike Michelle Obama and like Condi Rice but I disagree with both politically. Condi is not as friendly as she could be, but she smiles and is gracious in interviews, something Michelle could learn from. That said, women do still have a tough time with certain voters. In my home state the best candidate for Gov. could not win her party's nomination. It was more due to her lack of machine support than being a woman, but the issue was still there because of vocal anti-women Democrats (her party).

I just think from the title that you are playing up a race issue when it is more an issue of attitudes and personalities. I also do not think it is only this country. More Brits are politically aligned with Cherie Blair but few like the woman because she exudes the same personality as Michelle Obama, a stridently unhappy activist.

Good luck on the book launch.

Thanks! And just FYI--I didn't write the title. The Jewcy editors did.

We dislike Michelle Obama

We dislike Michelle Obama because she hates America, and is pretty transparent about it. She sees eye to eye with Rev Wright, and as an American, I feel it is pretty frightening to have someone with those viewpoints as First "Lady". Baraq might feel the same way, but keeps it under wraps. Michelle shimmers with anger, much more so than African-Americans who experienced real racism and Jim Crow. I dont like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez because they hate the US. I would wager to bet that Michelle's views on the US are not terribly different from Ahmadinejad and Chavez

Who are these "white" people, anyway?

Two thoughts.

Generally, you have to wonder about an article that purports to talk about how "white people think" about Michelle Obama, inside a Web site that purports to talk about Jews.  If the latter is worth talking about, then surely the former cannot be a unified group with any single opinion.

Specifically, it is kind of interesting to see conflated what "white people think" about African-Americans, and what college admissions boards decide about African-Americans.   The assumption is that college admissions boards are an example of white people.  True?

Perlman

Yeah, who are these "white" people part 2

Right now the Republicans are terrified that Obama may win in November...they are busy spinning just about everything to get dirt on Obama. Elitist, Not black enough, not patriotic, ill-equipped, wore the wrong shoes, the list is endless. So they find an easy target, his wife. Michelle Obama is a proud, educated and black woman and her critics are threatened by that. However he could be married to Oprah and they'd still be hating on her. "Barack's Baby Mama" ? Shame on you Fox! Has any pundit dare to call Cindy McCain - John McCain's Meal Ticket or Homewrecker or drug addict for that matter ... wikipedia her, the facts are there plus you'll be wondering who real is the elitist is.  Cindy McCain is definitely not shopping at White House/BlackMarket, that's for sure.

Why white Americans are uncomfortable with black Americans

I went to a high-school that was around 85% black and am comfortable around American blacks and never disliked someone because of the colour of their skin.

When my child went to kindergarten in a public school, with many black children I tried to say "hi" to their parents.  Many black parents would not even make eye contact, forget about saying "hi" back.

Many uneducated black Americans do not like white folk and that makes the white folk uncomfortable.

I worked with an African man from Ghana and he was as you described, polite, articulate, hard-working and educated.  Black Africans don't have the same hang-ups about whites as African-Americans do.

David Kelsey

And were they....

"In the February 2007 issue of the American Journal of Education,
researchers at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania published
findings from surveys given to 1,051 black freshmen at 28 selective
colleges. They found that 27 percent of African-American students were first or
second generation immigrants, which is more than double the national
average for all blacks ages 18-19."

And were they also beneficiaries of affirmative action? If so, isn't that kind of insane to give immigrants a leg-up over those citizens already here?

Immigrants vs. native blacks

"Polite, articulate, hard-working and educated" -- describes all of the native African-Americans I know. Anna, I think the lack of eye contact from the African-American parents may have been more of a class issue than race issue. Then again, there could have been something in your approach or some other issue that turned them off. Perhaps the problem was not with them.

Obama is the messiah-and if

Obama is the messiah-and if you dont accept that, we will kick your ass. He will put Israel in its place with a tough love policy administered by James Baqr, Robert Malley, Zbig Brzinsky, and force Israel to accept UN resolution 194, allowing for the return of Palestinian refugees to Palestine and Jewish refugees back to E Europe. You ziopigs are quavering like pork based gelatin

She married Barak

No, I don't believe 'we' dislike Michelle because of some racial slur, or color preference.  I believe 'we' dislike her because she was silly enough to marry a man who changes his views as it suits him.  We dislike Michelle because she supported a man who was part of a religious group which dislike America.  We dislike Michelle because she never took a stand to persuade her partner to not toy with Muslim propoganda.  We dislike Michelle (who's skin color we never noticed) because she never supported the campaign for Hillary Clinton's nomination for president when she saw Barak's wavering policies, heard his indesicive comments and realised his selfish motives for power.

Michelle Obama

Interesting article on an important topic. Michelle Obama is intelligent, well-educated, lively and self-confident. What a refreshing change from some of our past First Ladies, who glided through their roles in drug or alcohol hazes, or picked safe little charities for photo ops. I believe Michelle will be more in the tradition of Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosalyn Carter and Hilary Clinton. Of course people go after her - she is not only an assertive woman, but an assertive African-American womena, many white conservative's worst nightmare. Michelle Obama will be a terriic role model for young people of all races, and the sight of the Obama children playing in their (not so) White House is something to work for and anticipate with pride.

Morganfrost

Are you joking?

Maybe it's that she's a $300k/year lawyer who had every privilege that an American upbringing can afford a person and still managed to say that she had never been proud of her country and that America is "just downright mean"... really, remarks like that are hardly calculated to win over the affections of the masses here, are they?

Frankly, most people in this country don't care about what color Michelle Obama is, nor about her antecedents.  She had her chance to make an impression, and she insulted people.  She came across as an elitist who doesn't share people's values, and that has absolutely nothing to do with her color.  In the end, it's only a race issue because people like you decide that any time a black person is involved, the only quality on which white people are capable of judging that person is skin color.  I think it's projection.

Mostly

I think many people who don't like MO either have a problem with assertive women or they believe the rumors & lies spread by right wing "talk" radio and Faux News. Most haters don't even know that the "proud of her country" tape was edited to make her seem unpatriotic.

Jeffrey Weaver

Anon

Michelle Obama repeated the proud line a few times before it went viral. You can believe what you want, she is abrasive and far too many people are not wanting an abrasive first lady. She is a very negative person and one that has a problem with other people's success and wealth (but not her own).

Animal

Typical Pundit Piece

You say that Africans are better educated than American blacks so
that makes white Americans find them more sociable. Then you say that
this is surely the reason that Africans are over-represented among
black college students. An assumption you take as a certainty.

Then
you claim that white people are prejudiced against Michelle Obama for
race and gender reasons. No other possible reasons for any negative
feelings toward her and no mention of any positive feelings toward her.
And there must be people who like her enough to make her, finally,
proud of her country.

Then you leap to claim that the world of science is currently
infected with racism using the remark of one older scientist as your
proof.

 Great article. Thanks

Does meritocracy only apply to whites and asians?

Fortunately for African immigrants, they have not spent a generation
hearing white liberals tell them how "disadvantaged" and dependent on
entitlements they are.  In the same tradition of Jewish immigrants of
the last century, African immigrants see the US is a pretty good place
where hard work and courtesy is likely to pay off.

Perhaps you
should rethink your ideology, and consider the possibility that these
immigrants are winning their places in universities through their own
merit, which in the real world involves being likable and courteous as
well as competent.

this article should read "Why Are Jews Hating On Michelle Obama?

And the answer is obvious, Jews are virulently racist (yea yea, but not you)

as evinced by the media coverage of this race...it is a disgusting spectacle, and for me the day that this insane media consolidation ends cant come soon enough...

I love the latest narrative, "why isnt Obama doing better?" as though he is loosing, or ought to already have won or some such insanity...

Zionists cause anti-semitism....in fact, they created it.

Racism is racism...fat boy Jeffery Weaver is a prime example. Probably got shot down by a black hooker of something....

Count me as a strong

Count me as a strong supporter of both Obamas  - i will be voting for Barak and i think Michelle will make a great first lady.  Nothing will help heal america's damaged reputation around the world like having these two in the white house.

That being said, I think it is unfair to slur James Watson.  Watson is one of the word's premier experts on genetics, and his views on racial differences in IQ have been endorsed by the vast majority of scientists who have studied the issue.  You may be aware of the fact that most scientists are politically on the left and many of the scientists that published articles agreeing with Watson have publicly said that it is painful and emotionally difficult for them to publish these facts, but the scientific evidence is overwhelming.

A survey of all of these scientific journal articles was actually written.  The writers of the survey are on the political right, but if you want to fact check you can go read the original journal articles.

IQ is not the measure of human worth, or of human nobility.  But IQ does differ by race and the cause of that difference is genetic.  If you have more interest, must google the following introduction to the article

__________

A 60-page review of the scientific evidence, some based on state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain size, has concluded that race differences in average IQ are largely genetic. The lead article in the June 2005 issue of Psychology, Public Policy and Law, a journal of the American Psychological Association, examined 10 categories of research evidence from around the world to contrast "a hereditarian model (50% genetic-50% cultural) and a culture-only model (0% genetic-100% cultural)."

The paper, "Thirty Years of Research on Race Differences in Cognitive Ability," by J. Philippe Rushton of the University of Western Ontario and Arthur R. Jensen of the University of California at Berkeley, appeared with a positive commentary by Linda Gottfredson of the University of Delaware, three critical ones (by Robert Sternberg of Yale University, Richard Nisbett of the University of Michigan, and Lisa Suzuki & Joshua Aronson of New York University), and the authors' reply.

"Neither the existence nor the size of race differences in IQ are a matter of dispute, only their cause," write the authors. The Black-White difference has been found consistently from the time of the massive World War I Army testing of 90 years ago to a massive study of over 6 million corporate, military, and higher-education test-takers in 2001.
