FEATURED ARTIST

Featured Artist: Suzanne M. Falk

Cherrybomb - Suzanne M. Falk

My work is an escape as well as a submersion into my own magical thinking, childhood, and life traumas. It is based on visions, dreams, horrors, the search of love, salvation, dark humor, and gifts that I find on long walks through Phoenix, the city of my birth, my capture and comfort.

I have chosen to use objects that are familiar to me either for their resonance to the story I am trying to work through at the time or the psychic energy they put off. Setting up these still lifes and painting these paintings brings me a similar feeling to being alone in my room ,hiding in the backyard as a child or eating acid from the years 1987-92. Not unlike times in our life when we could fit inside the viewmaster if we only squinted hard enough, or the dollhouse if we only believed it to be true. These times and places where everything made perfect sense and everything had a happy ending. I am bridging the gap between that happy ending and the reality of what really happened or is happening. I spend endless hours with liquin, oil paints, and the anticipation of the story as it unfolds.

My work also affords me the luxury of escape on a day to day basis as well as the opportunities to travel to shows in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and New York and next year Europe. It has also brought me connections with many artists I admire including Kristin Calabrese, Larry Charles, and Kenny Scharf in addition to performing at the Getty. My technique for using realism to is the only way I know how to tell my story with as much clarity as possible.
