Anthony Hitler Bourdain

Recently I discovered a relatively new food blog called Hezbollah Tofu. As the face of a self-described "Bourdain Veganizing Collective," the site got me thinking a bit more deeply about chef, author, and travel show host Anthony Bourdain. In the past, I'd written him off as annoying but relatively harmless: Narcissistic, yes, and prone to angrily shit-talking those who disagree with him (and sometimes even those who don't), but generally not someone to worry about.

I took his anti-vegetarian and vegan rantings with a big grain of kosher salt. In his book Kitchen Confidential, he writes:

"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn...Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, and an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It’s healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I’ve worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold."

Sticks and stones, right? Wrong. Though it had never occurred to me before, today everything became kristallnacht clear: Who else stereotyped minority groups as "persistent irritants" and "the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit"? Who else saw minority groups as "an affront to all he stood for" and typecast them as physically weaker? Hint:

Admit it, Bourdain is right.  Anyone who would deny him- or herself the simple, inimitable pleasure of consuming delicacies like fetal duck egg deserves to be cannibalized.

Um

But wasn't Hitler a (Wagner inspired) vegetarian? That messes with the comparison a bit.

Vegetarians

My mother is a vegan, and gets colds all the time. She also has osteoporosis due to her refusal to eat any diary products, and guess what, calcium supplements do not work. And she cannot understand why her carnivorous offspring never gets the cold or the flu. Nyah, nyah.

Bourdain is EVIL

Anthony Bourdain will probably die a young death; what with
his

penitent for smoking two packs a day and eating pig feet and
snout; but now

he's damning those of us who choose to live our lives
healthily and

compassionately with his recent statement.  Good and decent?  Because we don't eat baby animals.  Hm.. Feel free to tell him what *you* think.
http://www.anthonybourdain.net/. I am a vegan who is foxy and healthy and never
gets colds!

Eating animals is disgusting.  Helen; good for you for writing this.  I don't believe the cold bs - animals contain
anti-biotics, cancers, feces, and all sorts of other delectable treats.  That will not prevent a cold, but a HEALTHY,
veg lifestyle CERTAINLY will.

I've been a vegetarian since July of last year and I'm proud to say
I've never gotten sick, no colds, I feel great, and I don't miss my
previously bad food habits at all!

Compassion over consumption,

Cheers,

Hitler was a vegetarian PT II ~ Damn someone said it before me.)

Furthermore, Bourdaine should be taken tongue in cheek (pun intended).
A guy who has spent years working in Kitchens with third world
immigrants whom as he claims are some of his best friends might
actually be poking fun at first world decadence and arrogance. I wonder
how many first generation immigrants this writer works with on a daily
basisAfter all, what a novelty it is to be an organic vegetarian or
vegan when you have a choice at your local gourmet organic supermarkets.

Thank You Helen

To call vegans and vegetarians, "the enemy of
everything good and decent in the human spirit" is just ignorant. Vegans attempt to curtail violence and
suffering through their dietary choices. Not to mention the slew of
vegans/vegetarians that are trying to make a difference with regards to
global warming. Would Bourdain actually have us believe that factory
farming, suffering, slaughter and global decimation be a shining
example of all that's "good and decent" in the human spirit? I've been vegan for a year now and this is the best I've looked and felt in my whole life. There is great joy and peace in knowing you don't have to end an innocent animal's life to nourish yourself. Go vegan and change the world.

While I don't agree with

While I don't agree with Bourdain's rash comments against vegetarians, please be advised that this is simply his OPINION. And if you have watched him regularly are you at all surprised? On that note, he is also not the one out ordering the slaughter of innocent animals - in fact on one such episode of No Reservations in Brazil, he is quite taken aback with the tactics used to slaughter cows and it makes him sick enough to leave.

I myself am not a meat eater, however I do appreciate that Bourdain takes the time to make the most of what he does eat animal wise, as opposed to, say, mindless slaughter for the fur trade, etc. Bourdain simply revels in and appreciates his omnivorous (and mainly carnivorous) nature. I completely respect the passion he has for his work. Eating meat is not a crime, and comparing him to Hitler would claim that he has absolutely no respect for any of the meat he eats. It couldn't be farther from the truth.

Bourdain is a Douchebag

You like to eat meat?  Cool.  You like to contribute to the suffering of animals?  Awesome!  You like to support factory farms?  Good for you!!!

What pisses me off are carnivores who take it out on the veggies, who are so defensive of their lifestyle choices that they need to criticize those who have a conscience, those who are brave enough to make tough choices in a world that makes in damn near impossible not to eat meat.

People like this are pathetic.  And Bourdain is king in this regard.  He's a douche.

Everyone Gets A the Friggin Cold!

Let's get serious. You can't avoid getting a cold regardless of your diet. I know a long time vegan who is always sick, always sniffling and has other ailments. People get sick and that's that!

Do you mean to tell me vegetarians and vegans don't get sick? Multiple factors contribute to illness so let's not put all the blame on eating meat.

sorry to say

But some people, even when right, aren't really who you want to take advice from. In my book, advice on food that tastes good does not come from my fellow Jews, nor from vegetarians, nor from "food professionals," (they didn't have 'em when I was a kid).
