Obama Silences His Critics

Everytime it appears that Barack Obama is teetering, he goes up the podium and gives a speech and the critics are silenced. His potency lies in the fact that he acknowledges his critics. His skill rests in being able to demonstrate the similarity between two seemingly contradictory things --- in this case a racist old black man named Wright and a racist old white woman named Ferraro. I found the speech to represent the second half of Martin Luther King Jr.'s project --- the healing part. It is no longer about white versus black, but about white and black suffering from economic disenfranchisement. He is a realist. He believes that the good in humans is always in play, even in the political game. He knows how to exploit that, just as the rest of our politicians know how to exploit the vile.

Obama is not MLK

Don’t be so naïve! He is of course right and wrong in his speech.  He is right in recognizing the anger, but is very wrong in then saying that it is different for the blacks in US.  We have to deal with all the same things that blacks deal but at a more sinister sublime level every day of our diaspora lives.  And yet for us the historical outcome in the face of much harsher challenges is far different then it is for African Americans at least to-date.  So no, I don’t think he says anything profound here, just like the rest of his speeches.  Much like the worthless rhetoric regarding abortion, I simply do not think that presidential election is the place to have this discussion.  Government = 1) strong education, 2) strong army, 3) low taxes.  The rest should be governed by the best thing in the world – American ingenuity and spirit! After all that and not the government is what has gotten us here.

How so? Obama can pick his

How so? Obama can pick his preacher, but cant pick his bigoted white grandma. I think Rev Wright continues to put Obama in a difficult position. If Obaba repudiates Wright, he is seen as disloyal and an Uncle Tom, and no one believes him anyway. If he sticks with Wright, he has to stand by some very problematic views-ie Israel responsible for 9/11, whites creating HIV to infect blacks, etc. Rev Wright reminds me of the British clerics who take advantage of the hospitality of the host country to preach anger and jihad against the host. If America is so evil, Rev Wright should move to a superior country like Zimbabwe.

Silent his critics?

Are we on the same planet? This speech did nothing to silent his critics. The speech had it's good moments, but it also raised more issues. Obama admitted that he had been present at some of these controversial speeches, a fact he had been denying. Secondly, it confirmed the extent to which Wright permeates Obama's life -- he is as much a part of his family as his grandmother.

What news outlets are you watching? Clearly you are a huge Obama support, Eteraz. Come one, though. Let's get real here. You are accurately describing Obama's intent in giving the speech. You are not, however, describing the reality on the ground. His critics are alive and multiplying.

Lastly, there is simply no comparison between Ferraro's comments and Wright'a conduct. Wright hates 80% of the U.S. and he spews insane delusionary conspiracy theories in order to perpetuate feelings of victimization in the black community.

Ferraro stated a fact which is not necessarily racist. First, would a white person with Obama's level of experience have any chance in this election? No...his name is John Edwards and he would have absolutely no chance whatsoever. Obama is where he is due to a unique set of circumstances that have culminated to allow him a shot at the White House.....Nothing racist about implying that his lack of experience has been supplanted by the fact that he is a highly intelligent black man at the right place and time. In fact, it says alot about how far America has come. America wants a black president so bad that it will allow an unvetted, untested, junior senator to be the front runner in the race for the White House.

This is a lame post

This is one of the worst posts I've seen on Jewcy. Mentioning Obama's speech in the same sentence as MLK? Sorry, you lost me at "critics are silenced." You are oversimplying all elements of this issue rather dramatically in your post.

Looks like his critics are alive and well, judging by the fact that Hillary now leads Obama 49 - 42 nationally. Furthermore, he is destroyed in Pennsylvania in spite of the speech:

By "silencing his critics" do you mean "losing the general election"? Hopefully I'm misunderstanding you.
