Jason, no one does yiddishkeit and sex better than Heeb, but there are lots of good Jewish magazines out there. If you are academically/theologically inclined, try Sh'ma. Secular progressives go to Jewish Currents. Habitus brings a laser-like focus on a particular Jewish community each issue (currently Prague). Lilith and Bridges still turn out Jewish feminism. This site, Jewcy, is often fresh, and I enjoy reading Jvoices as well as Jewschool. And of course, I can't neglect the magazine I edit, Zeek--publishing online at www.zeek.net and in print quarterly, our goal is to provoke discussions about Jewish identity. Check us all out!

Angela, you capture perfectly the egotism of the teen poet--the belief that somehow emotion will triumph over wordsmithing. I've been there!

Thanks! As I said in the piece, I was project manager for the siddur, and I'm really proud of it. It can be purchased at www.siddurshaarzahav.com

Alcove-One,
I am concerned that your posts might suggest to other readers that Leila Segal has unknown "benefactors" that influence her writing. The fact is that Leila Segal has supplied her blogposts to Zeek for free. We asked for them because they offer observations about the Gaza conflict that we don't often see in the U.S. press.
Segal is giving us a snapshot of the thoughts of a few people at a particular time and place. The people with whom Segal talked certainly had their own perspective and agenda, just as you certainly have yours. I suggest to you that you will convince more people of your perspective if you moderate your language.
Hm, I'm not sure the internet is all that permanent actually. Just look at what happened to the CIA interrogation "tapes." Digital information can disappear. In any case though, Mark Sussman wrote for Zeek, not Jewcy. Zeek is hosted by the Jewcy website, but we are editorially and financially independent. We were glad to publish Sussman's story. I gave examples of nonprofits I know well, but many of the nonprofits most impacted by the Madoff scandal are, in fact, working to house the homeless and engage prisoners. There's a good piece on how these nonprofits got hit on Huffington Post:

This funding crisis is truly widespread, unfortunately.

The current print issue of Zeek (www.zeek.net/subscribe), just out this week, features a piece by Kol Tzedek, a group of four very mainstream Jewish organizations--a federation, a congregation, and two nonprofits--who came together to fight for same-sex marriage rights in California. The new generation of leaders in mainstream Jewish orgs have realized the value of working together for change, and we will see an increase in such initiatives over the coming year.

Thanks for this correction. We should have caught that in proofing. I have corrected the article to read, a new seal for Kosher food.

Unfortunately, when this post went up, it was not labeled a Zeek post. Zeek is an independent magazine that shares the Jewcy webspace. As a magazine, Zeek aims for in-depth analysis. Sometimes sophisticated analysis requires sophisticated language. I felt that to be true in this case. If you don't agree, you are not a Zeek reader.
