Shmuel,
You wrote, "...when fighting to establish historical truth ran contrary to Israel national interests (and American interests, to judge by the coverage and the outcome)."
Do you really believe that denying a Genocide is in the national interest of Israel or America? Try to think long-term Shmuel. It can't be in the long-term interest of any country to ignore or deny Genocide.
The ADL's official statement on the Congressional recognition of the Armenian Genocide is to oppose it. The ADL has officially placed all of its weight against such recognition. Given that fact, how can you still argue with a straight face that the ADL protects immigrants of all nationalities? This is a no brainer, and if the ADL can't even get itself to AT LEAST SAY NOTHING rather than saying "don't pass the Armenian Genocide resolution" then what kind of "human rights" organization is that?
For someone who purports to be committed to preventing another Holocaust, one must ask: why then have you done so little to avoid the genocide presently occuring in our time? The Genocide in Darfur is not a possibility or a hypothetical, it is a crime that is happening today. Has he spent even 1% of the energy, voice and power against the Sudanese govt. that he has spent threatening Iran. He knows full well that one govt. is actually committing a Genocide while the other has not attacked a foreign country in over 200 years. He knows full well that in one case the victims are powerless while in the other case the potential victims have enough nuclear weapons to erase Iran from the map several dozen times over. Where was he in 1993 when 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered? Who is he kidding, and who actually believes any of this crap?
I think there might be some utility to having lunatics like Hagee as power centers in the American political scene. It might help to keep roque nations like Iran on their toes, after all, who knows what a lunatic might do even upon the slightest provocation.
Anon, that was not my argument, but it becomes difficult to argue against the "Jews only care about Jews" argument in the comments section of the Dror article, especially when you have far too many Jews commenting in agreement with what he has written in that article.
At some level, even those who are by now simply disgusted by the tactics of the RNC can't help but admire their ruthless and relentless zeal. This zeal was demonstrated most recently, as noted by Naftali, when the RNC pounced on Obama for misnaming the Nazi concentration camp that his uncle helped liberate during WWII (he apparently named Auschwitz when it was in fact Buchenwald). Apparently, for the RNC, nothing is sacred or off limits, not even the Holocaust.
Sandler is a comic genius. Even if he only knows how to make one specific type of comedy, that comedy is hiiiiilarious! Plus, as a diplomat, could he do any worse than our current so-called diplomats? Haven't you seen him on Leno, he's a sweet, compassionate, empathetic man, and everyone knows that the best way to avoid a fight is comedy. He's perfect for the job.
Jon, America needs to do what is in America's best interest, and Israel needs to do what is in its best interest. Israel is not Czechoslovakia circa 1938, and Iran is not Germany circa 1938. Nobody can make Israel do what is against its interests; not America, and not Iran. So we need to all stop insinuating that Israel is a helpless little baby that can't do anything without permission from others.
Let's see, so in a nutshell your argument is that since Armenians killed some of Ramil's family members 15 years ago, that made it ok for Ramil to chop off the head of an innocent Armenian who was attending a partnership for peace program with Ramil. Putting aside the fact that your allegation of Armenians killing Ramil's family members is complete fabrication, your argument is still nothing short of medieval barbarity.
This, of course, is not surprising given that you come from a country that universally views Ramil as a hero for chopping off the head of an Armenian while the Armenian is asleep.
