Tennessee Flier Claims Jewish Congressman "Hates Jesus"

Daniel Koffler

Steve Cohen was elected to Congress in 2006 to represent the Memphis, TN district Harold Ford had abandoned in his unsuccessful bid for promotion to the Senate. Cohen is the first Jewish member of Tennessee's congressional delegation, and the first white Democrat to represent Memphis since the Jim Crow era.

Cohen's views are fairly conventionally left-liberal, with a tilt towards issues of particular concern to his majority African-American constituency. Thus far, his highest profile legislation is a bill requiring the US government to formallySo much for post-racial AmericaSo much for post-racial America apologize for slavery and racial segregation. He made headlines for himself shortly after his election, when he tried (and failed) to become a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Though he wasn't accepted into the CBC, he earned himself a spot on Stephen Colbert's "Better Know a District" series that I won't spoil by describing in any way (just watch it).

Nonetheless, from the beginning of his 2006 campaign, some members of the Black Baptist Ministerial Association decided that a white Jew is unfit to represent Memphis, and targeted Cohen accordingly:

Inciting tension between African-Americans and Cohen was the aim of several members of the Black Baptist Ministerial Association who took Cohen to task last summer for his support of federal hate crimes legislation. The real motive behind the attack was revealed in later comments by at least one of those involved.

"He's not black," said Rev. Robert Poindexter of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, "and he can't represent me, that's just the bottom line."

This year, Cohen faces a primary challenge from Nikki Tinker, an African-American labor lawyer. In order to boost Tinker's chances to unseat Cohen, George Brooks, an African-American baptist minister from Murfreesboro (which is not part of Cohen's district) distributed a flier attacking Cohen. It claims that Jews in general and Cohen in particular hate Jesus, and that "Memphis Christians must unite and support ONE Black Christian" in the upcoming election.

Thus far, Tinker will not denounce the flier.

Cohen is a supporter of Barack Obama and believes Obama's successes are "showing us that Americans have gotten beyond race." In Memphis, that's unfortunately not the case.

Steve Cohen should apologize to the African American community for trying to enslave the blacks of Memphis.

Does that mean we get to be victims again?  Nah, then there wouldn't be anyone to blame.

Avigail

That smarmy, "love everybody, turn the other tuchas" hippie nebbish is a tad irritating. Still, it's hard to work up a real hatred for a figment of the imagination.

A very real person however to about 2 billion people.

Fine. Avigail, write better jokes.  Or at least use smiley faces.

Avigail

Avigail

Ah, Naftali, you know a curmudgeon like me is not allowed to use smiley-faces. I would be unclean until nightfall at the very least.

Now ChevyNazi (?), rehabilitator of the swastika, I am so glad you're posting here. I never would have known there are a gazillion people who really do believe in the great pagan Jesus. Still, I just can't get worked up into a froth of hatred over it. As a Jew, it's not important to me. But every site needs a schoolmarm to point out the obvious. Toda raba!

You are free to express your sentiments my dear Avigail. I am fully aware that without Jews there would not be Christianity. I guess that makes you my theological "mother" so I'll show some respect in that regard.:-)

Anonymous

Even most non-religous historians believe Jesus was a real person.

Avigail

Avigail

Anon, if historians like to be deluded, that is their affair. I must tell you, however, that you are absolutely correct to be here monitoring what Jews may say or think. I should also tell you that there is a hidden, invisible board beyond this one (secret handshake admission only) where we plot to rule the world. You should hear us cackle; it would make your hair stand on end.... Actually, I would be normally be capable of debating the existence of the non-historical Jesus, but I just wrote a paper on nursing theory (equally fantastical) and I've lost the will to live. Still, if you really want to debate this question, why don't you go over to the equivalent Christiancy site and have at it?

Chevy, my dear, there is now a six-foot, bearded man (an incredible hunk of burning kosher love) with an Uzi looking for you, since you told me I was free to express my sentiments. His name is David and he responds well to felafel and booze. I wouldn't intimate that he's your theological father, though he might go for uncle or cousin.

ChevyNazi

ChevyNazi

My dear Avigail, is this David with an Uzi looking to take target practice on me? I certainly hope not.lol

I will state for the record that I strongly support the Jewish nation of Israel and would gladly "cut wood" and "carry water" for that country.:-)

Nah, he learned to tune me out years ago, the poor man.

I have to admit I'm somewhat perplexed that Christians come to an ostensibly Jewish website to express surprise that Jews don't believe in Jesus, or want us to realize that Jesus is a legitimate path to the creator. I don't deny that, but it is not the Jewish path to the creator. To keep in line with the subject of the article, I don't imagine that Steve Cohen gives a great deal of thought to Jesus, either, but the same anti-semitic tropes can be trotted out whenever required. Many Christians seem to subscribe to them, i.e., Jews killed Jesus (or colluded to have him killed), Jews are hostile to Christianity, Jews are "stiff-necked" and are deliberately perverse in not accepting Jesus. Truly, Jews just don't concern themselves with Jesus; neither do practitioners of Shinto or Hinduism or Navaho religion. The way Christians describe Jesus, I can't help but think of him as a more svelte Jerry Garcia and I am easily amused.

I appreciate support for my country and my people. Forgive me if I am, nonetheless, suspicious. I am currently residing in San Antonio, the headquarters of CUFI and John Hagee. The Israeli attitude is that questioning any support is looking a gift horse in the mouth, but living here, in the USA, I have reconsidered the common wisdom. These folks are downright scary.

ChevyNazi

ChevyNazi

My dear Avigail, yes some Christians do believe in this end-of-days prophecy. I for one just support Israel because its the only democracy in the Middle East and because the Jewish people more than EARNED the right to have their own nation!

As far as religion goes, I am just a agnostic catholic. I do still love many things about my church regardless though. If when I do leave this earth and I find out that Jesus was not the Messiah and the Jews are indeed right I will gladly make the adustment.

I remember a saying I heard once that went: "Saying you love Jesus but hate Jews is like saying you love French fries but hate potatoes".lol

But I don't think one should tangle with Avigail unless you are holding the silver platter upon which she can serve your ass to you.  She's formidable.  And judging from Hagee, she has trouble with folks whose hair does not tussle when the wind blows.

ChevyNazi

I am not trying to tangle with Avigail. I KNOW she is formidable. I was simply trying to express my viewpoint.

I deeply respect Avigail and have no intention of trying to challenge my theological "mother".:-)lol

naftali

as you express your viewpoint.  :)

ChevyNazi

Well I'll hold it out I guess but certainly do not see Avigail as an enemy. A most worthy adversery, maybe.:-)

naftali

naftali

She's not an adversary, doesn't even come across as such.  Definitely not an enemy.  She's your friend.  It takes a while to hear the words between the lines.  Just make sure your hair will mussed in a strong wind.  If I had stiff hair, I'd stay out of her way.

ChevyNazi

I come here in peace. I know Avigail is a friend. I do not wish to fight with anyone here. I come here with the utmost respect for the Jewish people and their faith!:-)

Shalom

And their hair, don't forget. (Naftali, I don't get it. Am I an idiot? Can you let the rest of us in on the joke?)

I loves me some Platters:

Of course, Israelis can never be parted from smarmy music. Proof:

Anyway, I believe that Naftali is referring to the bullet-proof hairstyles of the televangelists; they must spend hours in the salons. A-ha! Thanks, Naftali, suddenly Ted Haggard's predilections are making sense!

Ultimately, to make a passing reference to Daniel Koffler's post, incidents, like the one concerning Steve Cohen, show me not that Jews are adversaries of Christians, but that, scratch the surface, Christians don't like us very much. While they may say they support Israel and "love the Jewish people (I'm not referring directly to you, Chevy, but to conversations I have had with evangelicals)," they also want to turn us into crispy nukular critters in an effort to bring back Jerry - I mean, Jesus. Christians perceive that they are in a contest with Jews to see who is right, although Judaism doesn't see it that way. I've been told, "Well, you'll wish you believed when you're burning in hell," once it is understood that I truly have no interest in savior gods. Honestly, I don't have time to invest myself in the intricacies of Christian belief-I'm too busy being Jewish (yes, it takes work). I have visited only two "Christian" websites in all my days, and they are as follows:

http://www.subgenius.com/

http://www.landoverbaptist.org/

Oddly, many of my encounters with Christians occur on Jewish websites where they always want to engage with me over my professed denial of the existence of Jesus. Huh? I have the feeling that Christians think we're up to something, so they are here making sure things don't get out of hand with the uppity Jews; it feels kind of ugly to me (as does someone calling himself any kind of Nazi on a site named JEWcy). I can handle them because I'm so formidable - but smell isn't everything.

OK, one more:

My sentiments of friendship to you and all Jews at this website are genuine. I'm not here to try to convert anyone. As I said before I'm just an agnostic catholic who is a strong supporter of Israel. I was always pretty much strongly pro-Israel but I become an even stronger supporter when I saw the movie Munich.

I also recently saw the PBS documentary The Jewish Americans which really opened up my mind to the numerous contributions that Jews have made to the nation that I love and live in!

I don't know what else to say other than as far as my "name" ChevyNazi, its just because I'm very much into Chevrolet cars.lol

God's speed to you Avigail!

Make some jokes.  Stop apologizing.  Relaaaaaaax.  And thank you for the appreciation, but seriously, we have work to do as long as the world sucks.  I think watching Billy Wilder over Spielberg, Lubitsch over PBS, Groucho over Karl, all of this will help so much.

Irony's not just a river in Egypt.

Israelis may be hot but we're also smarmy. After watching those clips, surely you can't take me seriously? I accept that you are a friend, and I wasn't speaking about you (except for the Nazi comment: ChevyGroupie? ChevyManiac?), but about the strange atmosphere that underlies much of Christian/Jewish conversation. Still, I can simply blow my opponents away with smarm.

ChevyNazi

ChevyNazi

in a class all by themselves! Don't get freaked out about the "Nazi" part of my name either.lol

Anyways I do think Israelis are hot indeed and I LOVE that Israeli accent.:)

Say Naftali, I've searched Jewcy and could not find one, single, solitary thing on Herb Alpert! What's up with that?

Doesn't anyone know that Herb is the original "Jewish Latino" and not Geraldo!lol

Avigail

Avigail

Is Herb still alive? I can see the Tijuana Brass every night here in San Antonio, though one more round of This Guy's in Love with You on the trumpet is too much, even for me. Don't forget that the progenitor of that particular jewel is the Great Smarminator himself, Burt Bacharach. How could a student of Darius Milhaud write such doggerel? A question beyond even the ARI.

You're the first American who has ever told me that the Israeli accent is charming, but of course, you must be right. Adam Sandler will be doing it, in You don't Mess with the Zohan, shortly.

Well, I must tune in to Coast to Coast....

Anyone ever explain the concept of Messiah as a job? Heckuva "to do" list. World Peace, end to family violence, love emanating from mankind, nature being completely different, Nazi's (real Nazis, not car enthusiasts) destroyed, temple rebuilt, twelve tribes reunited in harmony. It's a gig. Must have missed it the first time.

Just thought I'd toss in with Avigail. She's Israeli, you know. Tougher than all of us combined. But probably very sweet.

"Nazi's (real Nazi's, not car enthusiasts)"

Add to the list: grammar corrected.
