| Obama: Not an Anti-Semite | |
| Richard Cohen argues with voices in his head | |

Richard Cohen, the most useless columnist in America this side of Maureen Dowd, had a hit piece out on Barack Obama today, which noted that Obama's church's pastor's daughter's magazine gave an award to Louis Farrakhan, and managed to splutter out this pants-soilingly embarrassing bit of incoherence: "I don't for a moment think that Obama shares Wright's views on Farrakhan. But the rap on Obama is that he is a fog of a man." Try plugging that conjunction into a truth-table.
Obama has responded:
I decry racism and anti-Semitism in every form and strongly condemn the anti-Semitic statements made by Minister Farrakhan. I assume that Trumpet Magazine made its own decision to honor Farrakhan based on his efforts to rehabilitate ex-offenders, but it is not a decision with which I agree.
So, that should clear up Richard Cohen's fog, shouldn't it? Meanwhile, it's possible to play six degrees of Louis Farrakhan with anybody who's been active in black politics, however peripherally. So the Cohen logic would disqualify any black politician from the presidency.
UPDATE: Excellent point from Henry Farrell. Billy Graham and Richard Nixon used to tickle each other into euphoria exchanging their shared hatred of Jews. Billy Graham is also what some credulous people call a "spiritual adviser" to Hillary Clinton. The rap on Hillary Clinton is that she's a fog of a woman: out there for all these years, but we still don't really know her. So until HRC explicitly denounces anti-Semitism generally and Graham specifically, we can't know for sure where she stands.

The neo-cons are climbing over each other
to smear Obama. No doubt they would rather have Clinton, or Guiliani as President. Then they would get the war with Iran they so desperately crave for.

Oh, you can make mince meat out of Richard Cohen? BFD -- anyone can do that.
Deal with this guy.
"Obama says he found religion and Jesus Christ through Wright, whom
he met in the mid-1980s. Obama has been attending Wrights church
regularly since 1988. Wright warned Obama that getting involved with
Trinity, with its radical reputation, might turn off other black
clergy. But in 1991, Obama joined the church and walked down the aisle
in a formal commitment of faith. Wright later married Obama and
Michelle Robinson and baptized their two daughters.
The title of Obamas bestseller The Audacity of Hope comes
from one of Wrights sermons. Wright is one of the first people Obama
thanked after his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004.
For a Jan. 21, 2007 story in the Chicago Tribune, Obama said
that Wright keeps his priorities straight and his moral compass
calibrated.
What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day
political advice, Obama told the paper. Hes much more of a sounding
board for me to make sure that I am speaking truthfully about what I
believe is possible and that Im not losing myself in some of the hype
and hoopla and stress thats involved in national politics.
However, Obama has said that in the fall of 2006, he broached
the subject of a run for the presidency with Wright, who encouraged him
to go ahead.
As noted in a Jan. 7 Newsmax article, Barack Obamas Racist
Church, in sermons and interviews, Wright has equated Zionism with
racism and has compared Israel with South Africa under its previous
policy of apartheid. On the Sunday following 9/11, Wright characterized
the terrorist attacks as a consequence of violent American policies.
Four years later, Wright suggested that the attacks were retribution
for Americas racism."

DK: nothing you quoted re: Wright is antisemitic
I might disagree with Wright, but if you're going to label someone an antisemite just because they have a relationship with another human being--that other human being ought to be pretty vilely, hatefully antisemitic--not just espousing political views against Israel.

zbird, I never called Wright anti-Semitic!
So I don't know what you are talking about.

Kelsey: read the title to Koffler's post
The whole point of post was denying the fact that Obama is an anti-semite, as some would have us believe based on Obama's connection to Wright.
You said Koffler dispatched Richard Cohen rather easily but then presented other information about Wright from another source that Koffler's supposed to "take on". The obvious implication is that the other source you mention somehow presents better evidence against Wright that, somehow, is supposed to implicate his mentee Obama.
If that wasn't your point than I must have misinterpreted--but otherwise I can't see what your point was.

There are other issues besides "anti-Semitism"
There are other issues besides "anti-Semitism." Wright's perspectives are not "anti-Semitic," but they are problematic, and not perspectives the Jewish community should approve of or endorse. That doesn't make him an anti-Semite, though.
I can't help if Koffler and others insist on only dealing with that which isn't the problem. But there are problems here. Deal with the real problems.
Let's turn not to Richard Cohen, but to Steve Sailer.

Obama Anti Semite
Given the documented views of J. Wright (Obama's preacher of 20 years +) that have been broadcasted on tv and over the intenet, you can't believe Obama is anti semite? Wake up!
To view photo of Michelle Obama and Louis Farrakhan (rabidly anti semite) visit: http://www.youtube.com/user/brightamericaneyes
I dare you to post this on your article and blog. If you don't maybe you are an anti semite and a communist who doesn't believe in the first amendment...
