Low-Income Moms Need Veggies Too

Crunchy and orange, just like Doritos: but better for your healthCrunchy and orange, just like Doritos: but better for your healthBeginning in February, the USDA is allotting subsidies to low-income mothers for fresh fruits and vegetables. Shockingly, the US government is just getting on board with the fact that veggies are a key to a healthy diet. While the money allotments are still appallingly low (adults will receive $8 a month, children will receive $6), it's at least a small step forward. As the Times points out, according to a recent study, women who are given vouchers to shop at farmers' markets are more likely to buy veggies for their kids, versus those who shopped only at supermarkets. Just another reason to support your local farmers' market -- besides that cute dairy guy who gives you free samples of cheese.
