This morning's sessions: when the messiah's coming, and what it means to believe - fave quote: ''Why wasn't the Rambam just, like, I KNOW the messiah's coming?'' -- and a veritable feast of the Danish gay poet Jacob Israel van Haas, whose brother became a hasid and sister became a nun. Issues always sound better in dutch. Seriously: it's like Italian seduced German and had a kid who never stops french kissing.
There are SO many different lanugages here. I'm getting lost in them and I love it.
And I stand by what I said, that there's nothing like this anywhere. At least, not that I've seen. Yes, I know we have lots of Jews stateside -- I'm a yank myself, I live in Brooklyn and I'm representing NYC over here, whoo, but the feeling I get here is that of jews of nearly every different band coming together -- can't wait for NY Limmud and the amazingness that will come with it, but Tamar, you've gotta get yourself over here. England is a very different place than New York - know, though, us New Yorkers think there's nothing else out there, certainly nothing better - but the very smallness of the UK is what makes it so fascinating that all these little demographics interact in a way that I've never seen in america.....that is, actually interacting. and without those petty labels like ''conservative'' or ''reform'' or ''breslov hasid who would never ordinarily go to the shiur of a conservative rabbi, but hell, we're at Limmud and boundaries are sooo last decade.''

Just a little correction -
Just a little correction - Dane's (from Denmark) speak Danish.
The Dutch (from The Netherlands aka Holland) speak Dutch. Your poet is probably Dutch by the sound of his name and given that 80% of Danes last names end with the suffix of sen.

Just a little correction?
Matthue Roth need more than a little correction.
He needs a lot more learning.
"England is a very different place than New York..."
Yes, it is. It is a place where the Jews are afraid to be Jewish. A place where the Mayor of its largest city accused the Jews of treachery.
It's a place were Orthodox Jews are regularly assaulted by British (Muslim as well as non Muslims) people.

Gaaah!!! Anonymous, you are
Gaaah!!! Anonymous, you are totally right. I profusely apologize -- I was operating on very little sleep, and even less of a keyboard. Neither of which is an excuse to slur an entire nation's language, but it is a start.
That apology is most assuredly NOT extended to RL, who's just crass and impolite. I need more learning, but we all do -- that's why it's a mitzvah every day. I don't think English Jews are "afraid to be Jewish." Or, at least, not all of them are. Or else, uh, they wouldn't be congregating at a very public conference of 2,200-plus people?? Yeah, do some more work. On the buddy icon and the snappy comeback.

huh?
What was the point you were trying to make with the first paragraph? I don't understand what you're talking about. Why get my hopes up that you might talk about Jewish ideas of the messiah or something (so appropriate around Christmas-time), and then transition into a general assessment of British Jews? (Not to mention that not-capitalizing the word "Jew" seems sloppy on a Jewish website by the actual paid blogger, but that's my picky former-English-Major/copy-editor self, perhaps).
Regarding not all English Jews being afraid to congregate and be Jewish - how many of the 2200 people are British Jews? You mention all of the languages being spoken (again, that seems more like just a sort of fetishism for all-things foreign, just as calling yourself "Yank" seems to be trying too hard), which would seem to imply, at least, that a large percentage of the people are Limmud are not, in fact, British. I don't have enough knowledge about the issues of being Jewish in Britain to respond without you tearing me apart, but I believe there have been instances of anti-Semitism which are downplayed more than in the U.S.
Also, I happen to hate trolls such as Soccer who just likes to start a fight, but why, Matthue, are you calling RL crass and impolite? For disagreeing with you? RL didn't call you names or insult your background or family. That would be crass. Impolite would be to post anonymously. You can disagree, but the name-calling is too much.
I'm not appreciating your posts from Limmud as much as I would prefer. Can we get some more focus?

In defense of defensiveness
Leah, thanks for the tips. I usually attempt to be impeccable about grammar; however, the games all change when you're wrestling with the wonky keyboard of a public-access computer that believes there are only two digits between 0 and 9, and that the shift key is a state of mind.
And I really only try to down-talk people who down-talk me -- although, really, I shouldn't even be doing that. It's one of my New Year's resolutions. But the Talmud says that you should never levy criticism against someone unless they're on your level, and to say that I need "more than a little correction....[I] need a lot more learning" is a pretty harsh blanket statement, implying that the speaker is one on a higher plane than I am (and, Talmudically at least, that s/he shouldn't be criticizing me). That's all I meant. I apologize if it came off as more.
And don't worry, I'm not some creepy fetishist. I'm just conscious of being an outsider commenting on British society. Anything more fetishy, and I assure you it's born of your own imagination (not that I'm complaining).

Found my way here via link on Limmud website
A great read.
Yeah Jews have some problems with anti-semitism here but probably no more than in the USA. Also we're not scared to be Jewish - we're just a mixture of Jewish and English which means we're not only paranoid about being Jewish but incredibly reserved about it as well!!
Of course you've only got to look around the business, politics, music, entertainment, art science etc world to see that like in the USA Jews are very prominent despite being less than half a percent of the population of the UK

Hi, Matthue, lovely post,
Hi, Matthue, lovely post, and thank you again for coming and joining us.
Just a couple of points for people making comments:
there were over 2200 people at Limmud most of whom were British Jews.
Jacob Israel de Hann was a Dutch poet.
On a personal note, being a British Jew is about a whole lot more than fear of anti semitism. You only need to read this years handbook at www.limmud.org to see that. But thanks for your concern,
Hope to see you soon either here or there, bests, Naomi
