Radiohead made some top ten list on the NY Times for music this year. Can you tell by the hidden dismissiveness that I don't care much for them. What you question? How can I not love and adore the Radiohead?
Its simple...everyone else loves them, therefore I don't need to. I admittedly am reflexive to wanton gushes of adoration towards a band or movie. Which often I end up getting it much later and falling in love with it. Hence my late coming to the Matrix. Hype is what kills it for me though.
How can something that everyone possibly likes be so good I wonder. Crazy I know as I ingest insane amounts of Starbucks...on my company dime mind you.
Back to Radiohead. I tried getting it. They are experimental, great. Thom Yorke seems somewhat tortured, great. The list of things that qualify them to so many can go on. What is missing? Nothing they've created resounds with me. Its all to obtuse for the sake of being obtuse, experimental for the sake of being experimental. Music needs to be visceral for me. Whatever vibe a song is going for, it better grab it by the innards and pull em out in a reverse harikiri.
The funny thing is that I was thinking of a list of favorite songs of 2007, and all I think of is hip-hop. There is no rock out there that did it for me that came out this year. I like the new Linkin Park song, "Shadow of the Day." Its straight out of the U2 Joshua Tree songbook though.
Some fav's of 07':
Roc Boys (Jay-Z) - By far the winner. When I first heard those horns and the groove I was blown away. The lyrics are perfection. I think I already blogged on the Jewish references, hysterical. That is the surface...dig deeper and you'll find yourself at the best party you were ever at in your life.
Stronger (Kanye) - Kickass and pop perfect! Conquer the world music...just like Kanye wants you to.
Hip Hop Police (Chamillionaire) - OK, I never thought I'd dig something from a rapper with a name that sounds like a retarded Pokemon. The Slick Rick performance is great. A good nostalgia piece.
And some other awards:
Worst Hack Fake Sellout Whore of 07' - Avril Lavigne
Band I Might Be Interested In But The Guys Behind the Chick Singer Look Like they Belong in a V05 Commercial of 07' - Paramore
hmmm...more to come, but I have to poop.
