Picture this: you are at work, it’s lunchtime and you cannot seem to find the time between actually working, checking your personal email and browsing your Twitter page to go to lunch. You would get delivery, but what self-respecting Jew really wants to order take-out and have to spend all that money, plus tip? Says you to yourself, “not me!” Then the craziest thing happens, and up pops this on your Twitter homepage:

FREE LUNCH. Win a 12” MARINARA PIZZA if you’re the first to RETWEET.

Free lunch? Delivered right to your desk-side? How can this be?! An hour later, a sandwich is up for grabs. An hour after that, there’s a Veal Scaloppine or one of a number of Italian entrées – ripe for the taking.

Here at Jewcy, we’re unsure of what we love more – food, Twitter, getting things for free or the sheer bliss of winning something for no good reason. And so, come 12, 1 and 2pm, we are slaves to Twitter. At each of those three moments, New York hotspots Lil’ Frankies, Frank and Supper give away free meals and as Jews (a.k.a. foodies and lovers of free giveaways) we find ourselves powerless when such a sweet deal is placed within our reach.

Here’s how it works: First, follow @lilfrankies @frankrestaurant and @suppernyc on Twitter. When you see something that looks like the tweet pictured above, follow its instructions and re-tweet the message to your followers as quickly as possible. If you have done steps one and two correctly, you should be well on your way to winning free eats. Once you’ve won, they will directly message you on Twitter with details on how to receive your prize.

After weeks of winning nothing at all, we at the Jewcy HQ were determined. We set out to re-tweet as a group, knowing that with teamwork one of us would likely win the coveted prize – free lunch. Better yet, free pizza. In a group effort we rallied at 11:59am and waited with bated breath for the Lil’ Frankies tweet. We all re-tweeted simultaneously and anxiously awaited the result. The front runner? Dan Greenman, iMac user and Office Administrator at JDub Records. His mastery of the quick-click and his stellar Internet connection lead him to click first, mere seconds after the tweet had been blasted into the Twitosphere. After loads of hope and much wasted time, we were devastated when a food blogger with the gaul to protect her tweets from twit-stalkers (i.e. us) won a 12″ free marinara pizza over our beloved Dan. Possibly attempting to avenge Dan’s loss, one of our team members mindlessly re-tweeted for a Veal Scaloppine and won! Too bad Dan’s a pescatarian (translation: a vegetarian who dabbles in fish).

Moral of the story? These giveaways are a daily occurrence (three times a day if you count all three eateries) and a crap-shoot. Try your best, re-tweet the dickens out of those sweepstakes and share your successes and disappointments with us – we’re there for you when you’re still hungry at your desk and apologize if the reason for your tummy rumblings is due to someone in our office (probably Dan) chowing down on free pizza.
