Here are today’s top stories in no particular order:

  • In a move disappointing to many, the California Supreme Court has voted to uphold Proposition 8, its ban on gay marriage. The 18,000 marriages that took place while same-sex marriage was legalized will remain legal.
  • France has opened its first military base in the Gulf region, in Abu Dhabi. The move is said to strengthen the alliance between France and the United Arab Emirates.
  • A new American Girl doll will be hitting the shelves soon – and she’s Jewish. Rebecca Rubin is the first Jewish historical doll and goes on sale at the end of the month. [Editor's Note: more on this story to come. In case you were wondering, I had a Kirsten and a Samantha.]
