In Denmark, some people use "Jew" as a verb - to steal. "did you jew that camera?" Unfortunately there are very few people in the world that like us. Europeans despise us. In Asia they think we're devilish sourcerers. In the middle east? Well I've heard a few things. It's not surprising that "jew" is used as an insult. After all we did kill crist, RIGHT??? Christians have, for centuries glorified the execution of one Jew. They have idolized the scene. They have depicted it in paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and more. Don't you think this has had a deep psychological impact??? Ironically all those Christians that killed Jews in the name of christ secretly thought they were doing a mitzvah. Such a brave and heroic thing to repeat the story over, and over until we're all - all of us as one messiah - are dead. the evangelists now like to think of us as the key to their salvation. Why? So they can return as gods chosen people! They all want to be Jews, only when the old ones are dead.
In my little town here in Denmark the big story of last week was nazi propaganda dropped in 1500 mailboxes in the city center. My in-laws and others thought I should hide the fact that I'm Jewish. Very casually they disregarded who I am just because of a few papers with hate written on them. granted I'm the only Jew here, but still.
Anyway...more thoughts later.
I haven't seen it, but the news described it as nazi propaganda and the content was aimed at Jews. Perhaps other groups too. I think it's funny considering how sparse Denmark is of Jews. Maybe 6000 in 7,000,000. Total craziness. But I guess any would be considered threatening. I mean S.I. Newhouse alone runs half the world's media:) But seriously. That kind of paranoia and idiocy is very real.
I checked my mailbox, but nothing. I'm looking over my shoulder all the time, as I am the only Jew and pretty vocal. I mean some Ribe (the town) people know of my YouTube work, potato latkes recipe video, coverage of a festival a few months ago and my YouTube ID can be traced to some satiric comment I made about Hitler being gay.
Very interesting JD ... Where can we see your YouTube videos, cause I'm excited now.

... in various DBs by virtue of my being an outspoken neocon. Then again, I've also been libeled as a Christian Fundy.
Truth is I'm agnostic.
No matter what your ethnicity, race, etc. some ignorant fool is going to find fault with you on those grounds alone, it's just part of human nature. Be disgusted, but also rise above it, and save your righteous indignation for the more horrific abominations life has to offer.

I think this discussion raises some very important issues, in my opinion one of the most important is taking back the word Jew.
That racists use this as a derogative slur, must be seen in the context it is.
If an American was called an American, a Brit a Britain, an Australian an 'Aussie' would they be offended?
We should see it as a compliment, we must not allow racists, and bigots to claim this word as an insult. It's use as a slur is empowered by our avoidance of the term. It reaches to the very core of what antisemitism is about, if we can't use the word Jew in a positive way to describe ourselves then it has to be addressed.
Language is organic, it changes and grows and mutates, its time the original meaning of Jew returned!
We should claim it back and instead of reacting to it, due to the historic Antisemitic overtones, each of us take it as a challenge to reinforce that the term Jew simply signifies we are Jewish, and react in ways, that reinforce the positive meanings of the word. To me Jew carries connotations of excellence, strength and resilience.
Acting at the individual level I always try to tag each of my posts 'Jew' so as to stop those hate sites from monopolizing its use.

I'm a Sikh myself and I don't know anyone jewish but can't understand why being "A Jew" should be considered an insult, it's disgusting.
I remember first hearing it used as a derogatory term about 6 years ago when I was horrified to hear a friend use it.
Technically was it not the Romans who killed Jesus? But I guess they're covered as the Pope lives in Rome lol.
But seriously it's really sad to see this happen to anyone not just Blacks, Asians and Brown people.
Recently I've also noticed that Americans are extremely racist! I was watching Rush Hour2 the other day and the amount of jokes at chinese people's expence that are used is countless!
I have to say though that it's very admirable that Jewish people are big enough to rise above it... I just hope that racial hatred or conflict does not grow any more or else we'll all be fighting.

Take it from a Gentile, the non-Jews you've got to watch out for are the ones who stumble over "Jew", as in, "Hey, that looks like a good deli. I hear that lots of ...Jewish people eat there". It's because in private they only know "Jew" as an oath or imprecation. Gentiles who see "a Jew" as linguistically (if not culinarily) equivalent to "an Italian" are OK.
Now you know. Just don't tell the other Gentiles you got it from me.
i definitely think that a comment like that, or any racist comment should be addressed. although, it can be difficult in the moment when emotions are running high.
i've been working on comments to say to people when i hear classist or racist remark. my first response is to be biting and angry, but that only adds fuel to the fire. unfortunately, antisemistism is not a thing of the past. and it's not just anti israeli, but jewishness itself. therefore, there are many opportunites to try out my comebacks.
i am so proud of my faith and community, and I hope for the strength not to turn my head to such comments but to express my values and faith with pride, and hopefully to have an opportunity to spread some understanding.
lastly, when people make comments about there being so many jews as doctors, lawyers, movie producers - what have you - then maybe it should be explained that it is the responsibility of every jew to contribute to the society s/he is a part of as well as to the sustainability of jewish society worldwide. having many gentile family member and friends, it is something i tell them when comments are made in the media or from the man on the street. i consider it as assisting me in my jewess pr campaign
Just to clarify, I go to highschool and boys around my age are using it towards non-Jews! Just anyone who they feel the need to put down.
Not to make light of the derogatory side. Most of my Jewish friends said "Jewish person" in the 1970s. Lately I've noticed "Jew" coming back into their vocabulary, even in a slightly derogatory way: "Look, he's a New York Jew" instead of the 1970s version of the same: "Look, he's a New Yorker." I wouldn't dare adopt either usage myself, because I'm not entitled, so I speak to each assessment without the ethnic shorthand. Some of the currency, I believe, is because the American attention span has shrunk to seven seconds over the last thirty years--it was never much--and monosyllables (mostly) rule: In LA "Armenian" has become "Armo" both to those who would insult Armenians and then [internalized? self-deprecatory joke?] by Armenians themselves talking among themselves. Same with "wop". I grew up in a mostly Italian setting, by the way. But "dirty wop" never!
The term "Armo" did not exist in the 1970s, however. Only "Armenian" and "dirty Armenian." As with "Jewish person," the pace of life was slower. In this light, I wonder what would happen if Jews changed the ethnic label officially to Khosrompidmukhts, vel sim. à la Jonathan Swift. These days, dollars to donuts, inside of two weeks you'd all be "Khosros" to the detractors. Khosro probably wouldn't gain the currency Roseariel talks about in applying it readily to non-Jews. As with "Armo," it would always go to the intended address. Now, is that a gain in precision, or what?

Using 'Jew' is an old insult. When I was in school it was not common to hear the term, so I'd be surprised when I hear you say its achieved wider currency today.
I do remember being surprised the first time I heard it used as a verb in a deprecating fashion. I believe it was my girlfriend's father, whom I had the fine pleasure of hearing using it first, who when describing a successful negotiation, as 'Jewing' the other fellow down in price. Since my girlfriend's father was of Italian ancestry, I was somewhat surprised to learn that he had this power over others, presumably even Jews. Why a Catholic needed this I didn't quite understand. It wasn't until later that my father explained its full meaning to me, I being of the somewhat naive type at that age.
The fact that you are hearing it being used more often is probably a sign of the times and an indicator that the level of anti-semitism in our society is increasing.

Sarkis' comment was good except that Armo was much more used in the 70's than he thinks. By his experience, it is obvious that he was raised on the West coast during those times.
Armo was a widely used derogatory term used in many of the East coast cities during that decade.
Guess the pace of life was really slower back then. The word took almost a decade to reach across country.
Mass communication did really change the world!
If we who are oppressed by derogatory ethnic associations can't always control the narrative, we can still control the symbolism. If those of Jewish faith and/or heritage were to adopt a spelling Gieu (plural: Gieux), the detractors would be confounded. Same for Armenians: Armeau (plural: Armeaux). Such upper-class respellings and reconfigurations are a staple of both Jewish and Armenian assimilatory surnames in the US and Britain anyway. Families have long adopted this practice, since the nineteenth century. Why not take the final step and redesignate the entire community with a prestigious label? A poke in the eye and a gag down the throat of those who would torment us! Outside foes would never dare to accord either Jew or Armenian such a high level of well-bred affirmation. Every time they repeated a "slur", they would contribute to raising our public esteem by the mere fact of utterance.
Yes, Hagop, West Coast, farm boy. Saturday Armenian school. Thank you for the (disheartening) correction re Armo. I was good with my fists: too bad I didn't get a chance to use them for that particular bad word.
I sometimes wish Israel would send an assassin out to kill raving anti Semites. These people cause so much hurt and they need to be stopped.
I will give you some advice though that is constructive. Be the absolute best person you can be. Then when someone who has known you for a long time and who knows you to be a good person and who likes you says something bad about Jewish people ask them: "what about me"? "Am I like that?" Make them feel ashamed for saying it.

I'm an armenian jew. I go to High School in Los Angeles, and i hear "jew" and "armo" all the time. My school has 4000 students and probably 10 percent are Armenian and 20 percent are jewish. But i have never heard "armo" as a derogatory or hate term. I hear "armo" as just referring to armenian people. Sometimes i'll hear "damn armo" or "armo bastard" but that could just be an insult toward a single person, not a slight to the entire race. It could also be cuz we swear like sailors out here.
But in response to "jew", i believe it has become the new word "gay". We say "thats gay" all the time. I even say it. It has nothing to do with gay people. It is just a coloquialism that means "stupid" or "wrong". Same with the Word "retarded". We have nothing agaisnt retarded people, it just means "really stupid" in teen languge. (if you have a problem with that particular one, everyone who grew up between 1960 and 1990 said "lame" which is a bash against physically handicapped people). I do not think that people are using it as a hate term, but i believe that it has become the new coloquialism for "gay", which replaced "lame", which means "stupid", "asshole" or any of a variety of random substitute insults.
So anyway, about Jews being 'Christ killers' - I had to put up with this comment just this evening. Jews didn't kill Christ, the ROMANS did. Christians just find it really hard to reconcile the fact that God's son had to die to save mankind, considering that Abraham was saved from killing Isaac by God. It doesn't make sense, so Jews got the blame.

"But in response to "jew", i believe it has become the new word "gay". We say "thats gay" all the time. I even say it. It has nothing to do with gay people. To say that using the word "Jew" or the word "gay" to stand in for "a variety of random substitute insults" ignores the context in which those insults are tossed around. They wouldn't work as "insults" if the speaker did not consider it inherently insulting to be a Jew or to be gay. I mean, really, it's not like teens are reacting to everything they think is negative by saying, "That's so ice cream" or "that's so adorable puppies."
I don't want to bring you the stats on LGBTQ teen suicide, but I will if I have to... Stop calling people "gay" as a catch-all insult. And don't use "Jew" that way, either.
At least in Britain it's not yet replaced 'gay', although that here became the new 'crap' ages ago.

South Park.
The cartoon with the trash-talking kids? You know the one? Cartman, the large one, is always putting down his friend Kyle, who is Jewish, by calling him very derogatory things. Every other phrase to him is "you Jew". I feel that the huge audience of this show, popular for being contravsersial, has picked up this term not realising how offensive it is.
Just my 2 cents
CB

I've said it before and say it again: we should "take back" slurs against Jews by making them into slang terms we use with each other, much like black Americans did with the word "nigger" (turning it into the slang "nigga").
Examples:
מה נשמה, קיק? (Transliteration: "Mah nishmah, kaik?", Translation: "What's up, kike?")
Hey, Jews!
Besides, "Jew" still remains mostly a noun to mean "someone Jewish".
to the OP, can you say more about the context in which this remark was made? I mean, just saying "You're such a Jew" doesn't exactly come across as particularly negative or hurtful, in fact it's almost a lighthearted play on Jewish stereotypes, imo.
A little background, for security reasons you never say names over the radio this leads to everyone getting a nickname they use over the radio. Mine is either "Jew", "Hebrew", or "the claw" - the last one being a reference to a Borat comment and the concept as a Jew being a devil in disguise. All of these started out as racist comments made by the Marines and soliders here, most of the time with them not even realizing it was one, and has ended up as a slap in the face to racisim. Changing insults with humor has seemed to work well for me.

I think colloquialisms should be watched... as much as "retarded" doesn't seem derogatory, we use it in a way that intimates:
1) Things should be otherwise, and
2) We're the ones who have to deal with it (and, sigh, we wish we didn’t have to)
Hitler first murdered the mentally and physically handicapped... it was hard to argue with the logic of efficiency, and it hid the shame of genetic/physical inferiority of the “Master Race”. The protocols of mass-extermination under the T-4 program gave us the gas chambers.
My personal take (and I’d love to hear arguments to the contrary) is that any derogatory use is inappropriate. "Dumb" means the inability to speak. I don't even like "idiot" (which is an Intelligence classification, literally the opposite of genius).
High school is a cruel place of cruel people who constantly sycophantically praise or berate others to garner artificial social status. Sound familiar? Oh yeah, that sounds like Aryans in Nazi Germany… except nobody loses their physical life (only their social life and self-worth).
Why do we have to berate people or things at all- what are we trying to prove?
Certainly there’s a different order of magnitude in high school and today’s society at large, but why should we justify or protect anything that can be used as a crux for hate. I see “That’s so Gay” and “That’s Retarded!” and “He Got So Jewed” as the very first stepping stones to rationalizing despicably atrocious behavior. Do we gain ANYTHING by their use?

Short, funny story.
I had a black friend in the Navy who would laugh in the face of anyone calling him a nigger. Young men being what they are, and time on our hands we started getting silly. Polaroid cameras were really coming into their own at the time and we had a brilliant idea. We took some sheets and jury rigged a Klan outfit, complete with pointy hat and Klan cross and took his picture. Actually we made a bout a dozen pics and passed them around. The Captain, handed a copy on the bridge while underway, was quite uncaptainly in his rather loud guffaws.
I was later invited to join one of the various versions of the Klan still around in the 70s. I showed the recruiter my favorite Klansman's picture. He turned white as the sheets we used and I never heard back from him.
I had my copy for years, ruining it when I forgot to take my wallet from my pants before I went caving. I regretted the destruction of that picture more than the pic of my wife, which also died that day.
Racialism is a fact of human nature. The bible speaks of "the nations " without rancor, although their sin is decried and judged by G_d. It becomes a negative when we turn on another nation simply because they are another nation.

There is a scriptural basis for the "Jews killed Jesus" claim:
"Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"
All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children"."

There's no need to be sarcastic. I was responding to the Sikh who suggested that there was no basis for blaming the Jews when the Romans were in charge of the crucifixion.
. . . to the effect that the Jews did not kill Jesus, the ROMANS did.
That may be technically correct, in that the Romans carried out the actual execution. But, if the NT account is to be believed, the Roman governor, Pilate, clearly saw no reason to kill him and gave the Jews a chance to save him. When they insisted, "Crucify him", he washed his hands of the matter.
And the rest is history, as they say.
My brother taught me the best way to respond to Christ Killer....So?
Of course, I've worked on variations, like "So what?"
Or go even ballsier with "Had it coming!" or "Bitch had it coming!" Now that is freakin' funny!
I'd much prefer being called a Christ Killer than Jew (derisively). First, as mentioned it is biblically and historically inaccurate. Pilate as Governor of Judea surely would have not listened to the subjects...hence another falsehood that is the Christian bible. Second, it can lead to some funny responses.
What kind of funny response can you give when called Jew?

I think there is nothing worse than agreeing that Jews have killed Christ. It is an old stereotype, and if you agree with it, the fact that you're Jewish makes it even worse. You're basically just feeding the stereotype. Because one thing that pisses up people is when you mess with their religion. Saying that "I'd much prefer being called a Christ Killer than Jew" is not just historically inacuate, but demeaning to the rest of us. You can be almost certain that those Christians will mention that to their friends and relatives. And if they weren't anti-Semites already, you just gave them a good reason to hate us. Jews have a bad rep already, let's not make it even worse.
Dude, if someone calls you a christ killer, do you think correcting their historical inaccuracy is going to make it all better? That they're going say "oh, you know what, you are right! I'm so sorry for calling you a christ Killer. You Jews are great!"
Additionally, where did I say I agreed with it? I actually pointed out its falseness (see statement on Pilate).
Ultimately, if someone is calling you a christ killer to your face, I highly doubt you are going to be able to reason with bigotry and ignorance of such degree. Therefore, I say make fun of such stupidity.

My point is that going along with their false beliefs or "I say make fun of such stupidity." as you put it, will just make everything worse. Obviously you're not going to completely change their minds, but discrimination must be addressed.
By the way, did this really happen to you?
I understand your point, but don't really see it as going along with their false belief. We may have to agree to disagree on that point.
I do agree that discrimination has to be addressed. I think we defer on how it is addressed. Or possibly we need to discern how the term "christ-killer" comes up? Someone saying in an honest debate "well, you know the Jews killed christ?" is actually different from someone just calling you a "christ-killer." I'm thinking more of the latter than the former. Which is more of someone who is just anti-semitic trying to provoke you...provoke them back. If someone is just ignorant of the truth, then conversation.
Yes, I've actually been in a situation...twice (lots of ignorance in Texas). The first time I explained the Romans did it, and for that person to read their own bible...granted, she must of learned (heard) it somewhere. I did use the "So?" response the second time. Being this actually came from a friend, he stumbled at first at the audacity. Then, I schooled him on his own bible.
...And that was the entire point of him being on the Earth, so this fact makes his death less of a deal, i.e. less of a 'crime' for Jews to be accused of. That's why I've never understood the logic of the Christ Killer insult.
Something else.. anyone seen the note on Google about 'Jew' as an insult. It comes up when you google 'Jew'. That and a particularly sickening hate site. Google should remove hate sites from the top of its listings.

I see what you're saying here... and as you said, first you agreed to shock them, and then you explained it (if they will ever understand, i dont know)
As far as Google is concerned, you can sign an online petition to remove that hateful website. When I signed it, there were over a hundred-thousand signatures. I doubt that they will ever change it, because 1) Google is not a democracy, 2) they have a strikt policy against manipulating the top results, and 3) if they did, the hateful website would sue them for unfair business practices and violating the 1st amendment. Then the ACLU takes the case and it's Skokie all over again.
I had the weirdest experience with the term "Jew" this week. One of the NCOs (Non-commisioned officers) here asked me about kosher food and during the conversation I meantioned that some rules are different for Ashkenazi and Sephardi (such as myself) Jews. Before I could say another word, he interrupted me and asked that I not refer to myself as a "Jew" but instead say Jewish as he found Jew offensive. I wanted to laugh and punch him at the same time. To be told what is the P.C. word to refer to my own people and to hear a christian say they found the word "Jew" offensive. Being that you can't really argue with this man, he's also one of the few people I met who actually believes the jews killed jesus and upon our first discussion of this asked me if I knew who the Sanhedrin were and proceeded to give an extremely misguided explaination of them, I merely refered to myself as djudio until he left.
Just for the record, out of the times I've been called christ killer I've only replied negatively (with: "And he's still dead") to one of these. Which I'm not proud of as it caused more pain to a friend of mine, who is Christian and a good man, then to the person who said it.
...now that is freakin funny. My wife just looked at me as I busted out laughing.
So, was this guy saying that just to be a dick, or was he sincere? Can you imagine a white guy saying to a black guy not to use the "N" word because they find it offensive? Oh yeah, I know someone might want when they say it, it has an "a" at the end and not a "er." Spare me!
He was completely sincere and I've heard the latter said too. Actually, I've seen several people tell my uncle to refer to "Indians" as "Native Americans" despite the fact that he belongs to the Blackfoot nation (Blood tribe) and has lived among them for most of his life. Politically correct pain in the rear is all it is.
For 20 years, I lived in the Midwest, where "Jew" is a verb, approximately meaning, "beat up a seller on price".
In context, "I got a really good price on my car, but it took me forever to Jew down the salesman."

In my Jewish family, folks sometimes use it as a joke amongst each other and so do other jews. But no one from outside would dare to say anything like that to me (at least to my face).
But it's not only about Jews. Russians, when insulting someone, call them Churka - that refers to a person from either Caucasus region or from Central Asia, meaning "dumb" and "uneducated".
Armenians when trying to insult someone call that person "Turk" or "Mongol", meaning that person is "backwarded", "non-worthy of human status". They don't even use word "idiot" or "savage", they've just substituted these terms with simply "Turk".
These kinds of "insults" steaming from people who are themselves uneducated and completely ignorant and full of hate and jealosy towards the nation that this "insult" is being addressed. It is not as big of a deal when these terms are used by isolated individuals or as isolated incidents, but it is very sad and dangerous when these insults become an everyday cultural lexicon within a group of certain people or within a certain ethnic community.
As someone with both a Jewish and German backstory, I'd have to vouch for the person who nominated south park for the ax. It may be a high school phenomenon, but it seems to permiate with the younger members of our noble society, since many people who are now in their young twenties (sadly) grew up with this show. It's sad to think that at least half (in my approximation) of a school with 1,800 people has to base it's opinions of someone on such a blatantly racist TV show.
To the person who said that "Gay" and "Jew" can be used as catch-all insult, please, grow up and get a little sense. I don't even want to get into all the scenarios that I can throw at you, but for a second just stop and think about what your saying before your teenage hormones get the best of you. And by the way, how can stationary objects have sexual orientation?! "That test was so gay!" Makes no sense, literally or grammatically.
"Therefore, I say make fun of such stupidity." Uhhh, I sure as heck won't be the one watching your back if you try to use that one! I have no idea to what context you are putting this in, but assuming that you're planning to say that to the person's face.... well, I'd rather not be there. It's like in those lousy 2D video games; you're too slow, you die. I wasn't trying to be literal, but I think the point has been made.

Hi, I'm English and I was given a link to this discussion from another forum.
I'm totally shocked from what I'm reading here! I don't have a religion but I have NEVER come across the word 'Jew' being used as an insult and have never even come across any anti-Semitism (that I noticed). I know there are people who will use anything to insult a person whether it be their religion, hair colour, body size or nationality but I didn't realise that Jews were any more victimised than anyone else nowadays.
I feel totally ignorant now. I wonder if perhaps it's not such an issue in the UK?
Kind regards.
My reaction to being on the receiving end so such an "insult" is continue staring, awaiting the punch line, because "Jew" is not an insult. If prodded, I'd say "What's your point?" because they'd have none.
Sometimes, you have to take a little crap for what you believe in. Muslims are real drama queens when it comes to this kind of thing, and insist that the rest of the world needs to change to accommodate them. Don't be like them, just shrug and move on.
On rare occasions, I'd throw it back in their faces by having a little fun with them. I'm so cheap I buy my shirts at a grocery store. I buy my shampoo at a dollar store, then complain about the markup. I once spent 25 cents on a gumball and cried. Self satire isn't so bad, and a great way to disarm what is potentially a hateful term. Doesn't it work for the blacks?

Discrimination- Using 'Jew" as an Insult.
I am of Jewish blood. My father grew up in a Jewish household and has since rejected the majority of his upbringing. I have shown interest in Jewish culture, although it is hard to express yourself to your father in my case. His only sibling, his sister has embraced her faith and become an Orthodox Jew. I am very happy to know that people are making an effort to prevent genocide, and create awareness about respect towards all races, cultures, and ethnicities. However, it has sadly come to my attention that people are now using 'Jew' as an insult. I myself, a Jew by blood have been the victim of "You're such a Jew!" And unfortunately, it wasn't because I am Jewish. It was because now days calling someone a Jew has the same relevancy as calling someone an 'asshole', 'bitch', etc. I would love to hear what the rest of you Jews out there have to say, I for one am extremely disgusted with this insult.I would like to hear what fellow Jews have to say about this.
