A Year's Worth of Jewish T&A

Actress Jamie Sneider Makes One Unforgettable Kosher Pinup Calendar
Jewcy Staff

When actress Jamie Sneider was growing up, she kept getting typecast as "ethnic." A proud Jewess, she came up with a great way to show off just what's so great about Jewish girls - making a pinup calendar. "The idea for this calendar began with the desire to see Jewish women portrayed as both sexy and smart," she says. The calendar incorporated Jewish traditions, food, and lore, with Jamie posing as a sexed-up Queen Esther for Purim and using her naked body as a seder plate for Passover. Check out the images in this slideshow - although we might recommend keeping a fan handy.

I have to say, seeing this makes me sad.  The only relief I feel is that it is obviously one 'actress' promoting the prospects for her career -- I think it would have been morally crushing to see a calendar of, say, 12 Jewish women 'baring all' in the name of their sexuality -- that would be much more of an insult to Jewishness and Judaism.  I don't see any courage in this 'spread' (of photos), in fact my standard of courage, I feel, is much higher.  There is a young Jewish woman in mepeace.org who openly admits to being a 'sex worker', seemingly without self-promoting -- she has much more courage in my book.

As a Quaker and a Christian, my knowledge of the Jewish world is limited, though I have worked with many Jews and had Jewish friends all my life.  I will say this ... something like this would definitely be frowned upon in Quakerism.  There is little shyness about sexuality or nudity in Quakerism that I know of, but we do tend to embrace modest and plain dress.  And there are certainly testimonies within Quakerism which would call such a stark display into question.

Jamie Sneider has chutzpah, I will give her that much.  I do regret that she felt discriminated against by being typecast in 'ethnic' roles in acting.  She is a beautiful young woman, but I too have concerns about narcissism appearing in ways that do not become the individual in question.  And her work here, though artfully done in terms of photography, actually promotes sexism more than sexuality.
