Rosh Hashanah in Miami
Tell us who you are and we’ll tell you where to go.

The Hippie: Dreadlocks and Bagels
What:
Interactive Rosh Hashanah Services
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7:30 PM through September 14
Where: The Lincoln Theater, 541 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Why: If your love of the great outdoors is matched only by your love of Torah, then The Mosaic Outdoor Club of South Florida is your spiritual home in the diaspora. The all-volunteer, non-profit organization is dedicated to bringing Jews together and promoting environmental awareness through worship and outdoor activities. Their innovative, interactive, and spiritually uplifting Rosh Hashanah services are totally free for both members and non-members, but sign up ASAP—advance RSVP is required.

The Hipster: Way too Cool for Hebrew School
What:
Beatles-inflected Rosh Hashanah Services
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7:30 PM
Where: Signature Gardens, 12725 SW 122 Ave.
Why: Miami is known for many things, but being hipster-friendly is not one of them. The best you’re going to find is a Rosh Hashanah service at an interdenominational synagogue (which should appeal to your don’t-pin-me-down indie spirit) featuring music by the world’s greatest pop band. Ahavat Olam‘s music-filled service at Miami's Signature Gardens on September 12 mixes in Beatles songs with its liturgy. True, the backing musicians—the Big Bad Bima Band—have a cringe-inducing name, and you’ll never be able to brag about seeing Cantor Danny Marmorstein “before he sold out.” But seriously? It’s the Beatles. Don’t even try arguing with the Beatles.

The Beshert Seeker: Something Old, Something Newish, Something Borrowed, Something Jewish
What:
Young Jewish Professionals Meet-up
When: Saturday, September 8, 7:45 PM
Where: The RoundUp Nightclub & Restaurant, 9020 West State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale
Why: Start the party early with an evening of dancing at the Round Up in Davie. Meet other local Jews, share your thoughts on Judaism, shake it to 70’s funk and Miami bass, take some line-dancing lessons, and maybe find true love.

The Nouveau Jew: Better Late Than Never?
What:
Free, traditional Rosh Hashanah services
When: Wednesday, September 12, 7:15 PM through September 14
Where: Chabad of South Dade, 3713 Main Highway, Coconut Grove
Why: You don't have to be a member to participate in Chabad of South Dade's Rosh HaShanah services with world renowned cantor Rabbi Shlomo Abramowitz. In case you didn't know, Rabbi Abramowitz led services for many years at the Rebbe's shul in Brooklyn. Join him for everything from Selichot through Shabbat services on the second day of Rosh HaShanah.

The Super-Jew: You've Got Spirit, Yes You Do!
What:
Moses in the flesh
When: Saturday, September 8, 8:30 PM
Where: Bet Shira, 7500 S.W. 120th Street
Why: What kind of Super-Jew doesn't enjoy a little bit of theater here and there? The play's the thing at Miami's Bet Shira Congregation, where the High Holy Day season kicks off on Saturday, September 8, with an evening of Torah learning, theatrical reflection and uplifting music during Selichot. Torah Theater: "Meet and Greet Moses" will feature the talented Robert Dawson portraying the biblical hero, and spiritual and musical prayers will follow the performance.

The Intellectual: Smarter Than Jew
What:
“Psychological and Jewish Insights Into Gratitude,” a lecture
When: Saturday, September 8, 10:30 PM
Where: Young Israel of Miami Beach, 4221 Pine Tree Drive
Why: It takes more then the blow of the shofar to get you ready for the High Holy Days. You need intellectual challenge, which is why Young Israel of Miami Beach cordially invites you to take in a lecture by Dr. David Pelcovitz of Yeshiva University before you participate in selichot. Dr. Pecovitz will speak on "Psychological and Jewish Insights Into Gratitude." What do you have to be grateful for, besides that big brain of yours?

The Alterna-parent: Day Care and Dinner Parties
What: Family Day
When:
Sunday, September 9, 12 PM
Where:
Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, 18900 NE 25th Ave, North Miami Beach
Why:
Because making your own shofar, swimming with inflatables, watching holiday puppet shows, and eating free food is fun for the whole family.
