Kevin MacDonald has been described as the “Marx of the Anti-Semites.” Google around the slimier regions of the web and you’ll see that his trilogy of books on Jews—A People that Shall Dwell Alone, Assimilation and its Discontents, and Culture of Critique—is celebrated in the nastiest Jew-hating environs on the net. And MacDonald himself is a hardcore American nativist in the Charles Lindbergh mold.
None of which necessarily means that MacDonald’s academic arguments are wrong. H
Lucky Lindy: His American nativism lives one's a tenured professor of psychology, his theories have received some support from well-respected colleagues, and there’s no getting around the fact that his Jewish trilogy is as fascinating as it is alarming, a sui generis look at Jewish history and psychology with the help of modern evolutionary theory.
In this week’s Big Question, National Review columnist John Derbyshire and Jewcy’s own Joey Kurtzman mix it up over the question “Is Kevin MacDonald right about the Jews?”
Joey and Derbyshire take the query and launch into a whole host of questions related to Jews and race in America: can a gentile journalist criticize Jews without being “smashed to pieces”? Would Jews benefit from more WASP criticism of Jewish culture? Are politically correct liberals in fact hopelessly racist? And so on.
But all the time, the question lingers: might Kevin MacDonald be right about the Jews?

John,
All right, so why don’t I start this off by giving a quick synopsis of Kevin MacDonald’s work?
The man’s a professor of psychology at Cal State Long Beach who used to study wolves, and then one day switched to Jews. For reasons inexplicable to me, his work on wolves attracted rather less attention than his work on Jews.
MacDonald is an advocate of "evolutionary psychology," a rapidly growing field which seeks to explain the human mind and human behavior by examining them through the lens of evolutionary theory. He promotes the controversial idea that evolutionary competition takes place not just between individuals or genes, but also between human groups. He’s studied the Amish, the Roma, the Overseas Chinese, and other groups from an evolutionary perspective. But his primary focus has been on Jews.
I would boil down his theses to these two: In the course of Jewish history, Jews have developed
Evolutionary Strategist: Roma woman predispositions to high intelligence, verbal intensity, altruism to kin, and a suite of other traits; and these traits further a “group evolutionary strategy” by which the Jewish population competes with non-Jewish populations.
To see some examples of how MacDonald’s theories have been treated in popular media, have a look at Judith Shulevitz’s “Evolutionary Psychology’s Anti-Semite” in Slate, and Mr. Derbyshire’s “The Marx of the Anti-Semites” in The American Conservative.
Okay, onto the meat.
True story: a Jewess of my acquaintance, who happens to be a veteran of several mainstream Jewish organizations, tells of stumbling upon MacDonald’s essay “Understanding Jewish Influence.” As she read about the gobsmacking ability of Jews to obtain power and influence in Western societies, about our eminence in academia and law, about how our high intelligence and organizational skill are key to our ability to achieve such prominence, my friend’s chest swelled with ethno-religious pride and she forwarded the essay on to a former colleague of hers, also a functionary in a Jewish organization. The friend replied: “The article was written by a non-Jew! And an antisemite no less! Don’t forward it to anyone else!”
It’s a tiresome old story. Self-celebratory, triumphalist Jewish historiography looks a heck of a lot like much of the stuff we dismiss as “antisemitism.” Had Kevin MacDonald proposed the same thesis about a Jewish “group evolutionary strategy” but been careful to pleasure us Jews with the sort of masturbatory interpretation we like—you know how it goes, something along the lines of “look at everything those Jews have given us with this strategy of theirs, all the wonderful scholarship and Nobel Prizes and scientific advances and cutting-edge social science!”—you can be sure his work would have met a rather different reaction. A reaction more like that received by the recent University of Utah study that argued that the Ashkenazi Jewish population has acquired genetic traits that confer high intelligence.
Sure, some of us were made a bit nervous to hear “Jewish genetics” discussed, but we were titillated and flattered by the study’s argument, too. When the New York Times wrote about the study we forwarded it around, helping make it the Times’ “most e-mailed story,” and instead of denouncing it as horrendous and antisemitic, I’d say most of us look forward to learning whether its thesis stands up to future study.
Which, really, is the only reasonable reaction to MacDonald’s work. In his preface to Culture of Critique, MacDonald says, “For me the only issue is whether I have been honest in my treatment of sources and whether my conclusions meet the usual standards of scholarly research in the social sciences.”
I don’t think it would be a courtesy too far if we were to evaluate MacDonald’s work based on those very criteria. Jewish academics have advanced their fair share of controversial theories and were within their rights to ask that those theories be evaluated based on their scholarly (rather than aesthetic) merit.
Whether we dislike MacDonald’s arguments or not, whether we find them gratifying or insulting, all that matters is whether his premises and models are valid, and whether the insights they produce stand up to further research. If a critic wants to wade into the debate over whether “group selection theory” is a useful scientific model, fair enough. If someone wants to argue that the Ashkenazi experience in Europe did not last long enough for selective evolutionary pressures to work their genetic magic, go to it. But accusations of antisemitism are irrelevant to all of these issues, and they serve only to prevent a rigorous examination of MacDonald’s work.
Selective Pressures?: Life in the shtetl
In Slate, Judith Shulevitz pleaded with John Tooby—the director of UC Santa Barbara’s Center for Evolutionary Psychology, and at that time the president of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society—to produce an academic rebuttal of MacDonald's arguments. He assured her that he would soon do so. He never did.
So is Kevin MacDonald right about the Jews? I don’t know. For now, that seems to me the only answer.
So I’ve got to ask…when you reviewed MacDonald’s work in The American Conservative, why did you play all the same games as Shulevitz? Before you even got down to examining MacDonald’s work you had already tainted him as “The Marx of the Anti-Semites” who had “the Jew thing.”
Come on, now. Were you afraid of offending Jews if you gave MacDonald a fair hearing, without prefacing your review with the equivalent of a flashing red neon light announcing “SUBJECT OF REVIEW IS AN ANTISEMITE! DISREGARD! DISREGARD!” Or was it Pat Buchanan or Scott McConnell who was afraid of getting pilloried by angry Jews? Whose sack was missing?

as an atheist jew, there are few things i enjoy more than a piece of well reasoned anti-semitism (heidegger, burckhardt, schmitt). only the jew who knows how superior is his thinking knows how fit he is to be despised; only the jew would be willing to honestly appraise the validity of such an argument against his existence. but you can't just hate a jew anymore: it's got to be systematic, abstracted into a theory. which is the greatest proof of how completely and systematically jewish consciousness has remade the world. the real meaning of macdonald's work is nostalgia not for the world in which jews had less power -- but the world in which, because of this, you could be free to hate them.
unfortunately, despite my enthusiasm, CofC is a giant POS. macdonald wants to blame the jews for liberalism -- if not modernity per se -- but this is tough, because not only were hegel, robespierre, napoleon, and alexander the great not jews, but america has no prior tradition which to react to and repudiate liberalism. here, a "conservative" is always only an earlier liberal opposing a newer one, or simply an obscurantist moron.
so all macdonald is left with is bottomless evidence that jews are simply the most successful liberals, which is to say, the best users of liberalism. we have the power. which is another way of saying, the best americans. that doesn't work either. so the pseudo-synthetic notion of "group evolutionary strategy," antithetical to liberalism, is introduced, to demonstrate that jews are actually liberals-in-disguise. liberalism has been co-opted, the same way countless other social systems have been, to serve primordial (tribal) jewish needs.
so, the jews are at once guilty of liberalism as well as its undermining. sounds like something a fucking jew would do, after all.

Leaving aside Joel Katz' nervous sarcasm, he is right about modern liberalism antedating the emancipation of Jews after the French Revolution. With the exception of Spinoza I don't think there was another Jewish thinker who contributed to the development of liberal thought of the Enlightenment period which started om the 17c, the "age of reason."
However, whether "the Jews are simply the most successful liberals, which is to say, the best users of liberalism," is debatable. Women, Blacks and Gays haven't done so badly either.

The issue of MacDonald’s antisemitism should by now have been answered in the affirmative. For anyone even remotely familiar with traditional European antisemitic tropes will find them all laid out in his screeds, albeit packaged in the new language of genetics.
Like traditional antisemitic scholarly writing, MacDonald’s forces Jews into a double bind with his thesis/accusations. For example, when he argues that Jews are programmed to survive this is obviously true of all living objects. Yes when applied to Jews it become a kind of conspiracy “these people will do anything to survive,” or “they are guilty of surviving.” The implication is that the Macdonalds of this world don’t have to do anything to survive.
Moreover, the concept of genetic programming functions as a kind of unconscious in MacDonald’s formulation. Hence, no Jew can defend himself against an accusation of putting the interests of his people first since his defense will be seen as an admission of guilt: “Of course you will deny it,” you have been programmed to think that way.
This means that Jews, and probably all humanity, are denied the possibility of free will.
This leads me to the second point: arguing about free speech in such a context is meaningless. We are all after programmed to speak and write in a certain way and hence dialogue is impossible.

First, if you are not prepared to use terms such as Negress, or Limey, don't use the term "Jewess"
Kurtzman doesn't speak for all Jews, or even most of them.
Second, the idea that Jews have attained lots of "power" is an antisemitic fantasy.
There used to be a Jewish joke in the 1920's Berlin where a gentile saw his Jewish friend reading an antisemitic paper. When asked about the Jew said, "when I read the Jewish press all I see are stories about pogroms, and antisemitic acts of brutality. When I read the antisemitic press I see articles about powerful Jews who control the media, the banks, in short the world."
Antisemites need to tell themselves that Jews are all powerful.
Third, if Jews are and were all powerful how do you account for their being so easily slaughtered during the Holocaust? In fact it was the smartest Jews of all that got killed in the Holocaust. The antisemites have an answer, "the Holocaust was a myth." Does MacDonald believe that too? If not, how does he account for the Holocaust?
Fourth,
As the Holocaust shows there is no correlation between survival and intelligence.
It is also true in contemporary Western culture where the smartest people have the fewest babies. This in itself contradicts MacDonald’s tendentious thesis.
Finally, the most telling evidence that MacDonald is all wet is that smart Jews like Kurtzman want to take him seriously.

For those of you who would give old MacDonald a pass because he has done excellent work in his own field of psychology, let's not forget that many brillian academics did at one time join the Nazi party in Germany. For example,
Konrad Lorenz who discovered the phenomenon of imprinting in animals and later ironically wrote about human aggression (his own?) also wrote in 1938:
"Lorenz joined the Nazi Party in 1938 and accepted a university chair under the Nazi regime. In his application for membership to the Nazi-party NSDAP he wrote in 1938: "I'm able to say that my whole scientific work is devoted to the ideas of the National Socialists." His publications during that time led in later years to allegations that his scientific work had been contaminated by Nazi sympathies: his published writing during the Nazi period included support for Nazi ideas of "racial hygiene" couched in pseudoscientific metaphors.
When accepting the Nobel Prize, he apologized for a 1940 publication that included Nazi views of science, saying that "many highly decent scientists hoped, like I did, for a short time for good from National Socialism, and many quickly turned away from it with the same horror as I." It seems highly likely that Lorenz's ideas about an inherited basis for behavior patterns were congenial to the Nazi authorities, but there is no evidence to suggest that his experimental work was either inspired or distorted by Nazi ideas.
During the final years of his life Lorenz supported the fledgling Austrian Green Party and in 1984 became the figurehead of the Konrad Lorenz Volksbegehren, a grass-roots movement that was formed to prevent the building of a power plant at the Danube near Hainburg an der Donau and thus the destruction of the yet untouched woodland surrounding the planned site."

As a non-Jew, I find the reasoning of the repliers somewhat amusing. All are shooting the messenger not the message.
Are Jews generally over-represented, proportionately, at the higher-levels of those societies where they can compete on an equal footing with other ethnic groups? We all know, and accept, the phenomenon of gifted Asian students who excel academically. Most attribute this to the emphasis that these children's parents place on education. This is surely an evolutionary advantage.
What is the difference between it applying to them and not Jews? After all, Jews have always valued education and doing well. Combined with the restrictions on occupations available to them in time gone past, perhaps us Gentiles have forced on them an evolutionary advantage. Hence the large numbers of Jewish Bankers, Lawyers and Doctors. Not to mention Scientists. Maybe we have been hoist by our own petard by our Antisemitism. What irony.

What about the success of the Irish - at least in the english speaking world. The Irish share a lot of the talents of the Jews as described. It might be something to do with being oppressed over a long period

It makes it all the more interesting, then, to look at the troubled and difficult relationship between the Irish and the Jews. There has been some extraordinary integration - a father/son pair of Lord Mayors of Dublin were Jewish - but also distrust, fear and misunderstanding that continues to this day. Much of that is political - as a post-colonial nation itself, Ireland has some serious issues (legitimate ones, I think) with Israel's behaviour towards the Palestinians. Add that to old-fashioned issues the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church had with Jews, Irish "neutrality" during WWII, and the Irish military presence in the UN's force in Lebanon for a few decades now, and you have a truly strange relationship.
The IRA used to identify with the Jews as fellow-sufferers under British occupation (till 1948, Israel/Palestine was under a British mandate). These days, you'll see Yassar Arafat's face next to Bobby Sands's on Republican murals in Belfast.
Two historically-oppressed groups don't necessarily recognize themselves in each other. Worse yet, sometimes they do recognize themselves, and don't like what they see.

This whole tendentious argument is a waste of time. No race is "evolved" enough for it to matter. Let us assume that there are more "smart jews" than there are (proportionately) smart Chinese. Its just one of the millions of small differences in proportions of a thousand different traits that one can find as one divides and redivides 6 billion people in different ways. To the individual, it means nothing if its not a near universal characteristic....and no jew or anti-semite is claiming that it is (or, if they are, they are talking nonsense). Relax. we are all born and we will all die. The rest is an endless muddled mass of details....

Reason for anti-Semitism?
I've read all the theories: jealousy of Jewish wealth (there've been many poor Jews and they've been just as despised), envy of Jewish "smarts" (then why isn't there an equally universal hatred of Asians? and there are plenty of not-so-intelligent Jews), psychiatric aberration (if only--then it'd be much less prevalent), political stance (we've been blamed for both capitalism and communism), Zionism (plenty of Jew-hatred before Herzl and the State of Israel), and finally resentment of Jewish ethical monotheism (I don't think that's what goes through the average anti-Semite's head---"I hate the belief in one God with moral expectations, so I'm gonna take it out on its inventors"--no one thinks like that).
No, I've come to the conclusion that anti-Semitism exists because...it exists. It's a self-perpetuating meme. Those who hate Jews do so because they were taught to do so by other people who hated Jews, and so on. The fact that we're arguably the oldest continuous civilization still around may account for the persistence of Jew-hatred throughout history. If the Sumerians were still with us, I'd bet people would ask, "Why is there anti-Sumerianism?"

since the hipster jew and oakeshott-lite can't figure out if they actually agree with macdonald or not, maybe a nazi can help.
carl schmitt believed the only relevant group distinction to be made was on the basis of the political, and which took the form friend/enemy. "enemy" meant existential threat, someone possibly worth killing. it was not simply code for "liberal" or "jew," since the nature of liberalism for schmitt consisted precisely in its NOT being a political standpoint but a generalized system of economic, cultural, and moral nullification of existing political standpoints and the group distinctions based on them.
as far as kurtzman goes, i don't know what the fuck he's talking about. 'culture of critique' is shit, pamphlet-level hackwork. gentile culture must indeed be immanently pathological if macdonald doesn't think german antisemitism culminating in the holocaust gives adorno ample reason to critique it. as for "group strategy," if jews acted historically to mitigate their risk, how is this ever anything but political? as for socialism, what notion of abstract equality ever stemmed from anything other than risk-minimization?

Isn't Derbyshire using the same hyperbole (and then some) in describing the supposedly beleaguered situation of American conservatives. And btw - I also live in a suburb of NY and don't need to travel more than 25 yards in any direction to stumble on a conservative. Yes Jews are over represented in upper eschalons of society.
I recently stumbled on a web site - here it is: http://www.jinfo.org/index.html which documents many Jews who have performed highly in all spheres of western society. Looking at Nobel Laureates, the statistics are startling. I will leave you to read it yourself. But is it because Jews are destined to perform this way or have evolved to this? I for one do not think so. Jews have been known for centuries as "the people of the Book." OK granted that the Book in this instance refers to the Torah and by extension, I suppose, the Talmud but that culture of learning translates well into secular pursuits. After all how many Jewish moms have talked proudly of "my son, the doctor, or my son the lawyer" or whatever? There is something in traditional Jewish culture and values which supports, encourages, values and even adores learning. Moreover, much Jewish religious teaching is not focussed on the here after is it is with Christianity and Islam. It is focussed on the here and now - being a better Jew by making the world a better place. Take adoration of learning and recognition that the world (not the hereafter is where we reside) and its a powerful force for development and high performance.
So is it inevitable? No. I recall watching a lovely documentary about violin makers (ok be patient, bear with me and follow me on this one.) One old violin maker being interviewed said that in times gone by his biggest customer group was Jewsih moms and dads buying for their kids. Now it is Chinese moms and dads doing the same thing. I think this is one small example. Chinese culture values this kind of cultural pursuit and learning and Chinese just like Jews are often good at secular pursuits including business, science and so forth. Why - they share some cultural characteristics. And of course they sometimes share one other characteristic. Chinese abroad living in other lands are sometimes villified hated and as a result suffer pogroms because like Jews they have been successful in material terms.
Envy is a powerful force for hatred. We have an expression in Australia - we call it "the tall poppy syndrome." In other words if you are seen to be over achieving the group envy of thosse less successful will quickly conspire to cut you down to size. I cannot help but feel that much anti semitism is really - deep down - about this.
The germ of hatred may grow in a field of religious intolerance but it is watered and fertilised by envy.

It can't be evolution because in those places such as Russia in lat e 20c and in Spain of the 18c Jews who had assimilated were indistinguishable from their non Jewish neighbors and the whole country suffered as a result.
Jewish achievement is cultural and contingent on Jewish learning and values. Once those are left behind the first and maybe second generation of former Jews still adhere to some of these values.

Why are the Jews hated? Because they are critics incapable of criticizing themselves.

Conclusion
According to statistics, White race people have a .6 IQ point above Jew race people. Interesting but misses the point
It's interesting reading some of the responses here. A lot of people here believe that Jewish success is the cause or main factor in anti-Semitism.
This is the misunderstanding or perhaps denial of anti-Semitism though a Jewish lens. It is not success that people begrudge, but success in being a strong contributory factor in bringing a radically different outlook and politic (i.e communism, neconservatism, 'hate crime' legislation etc) that is that is the main cause of anti-Semitism today.
That both observant and atheistical Jews are often identified with causes such as communism, socialism, are often anti-nation state and see the world as not sufficiently ordered and that it will only be fixed by a Jewish intellectual order; effectively at its extreme; the world is broken until there is a socialist one world government under secular-humanism and all nations destroyed.
'Jewish conspiracies' are sometimes a distortion and a myth, but of course all groups have their own ethnic conspiracies, but in the end, it is not a 'conspiracy' that is the problem, it is a radically different outlook that some Jews seek to impose which is the issue, and that they don't see it as a problem or a factor in anti-Semtism but actually celebrate it through ethnic-aggrandizement in Jewish publications and identify it as Jewish and so only enflames anti-Semitism.
This is a simplification, but until this can be talked about openly than anti-Semitism will seek to exist in the world.

Ted Kaczynski is actually a brilliant man. unlike that psuedo-intellectual MacDonald. Despite his reprehensible actions, Kaczynski's Unabomber Manifesto makes some valid points:
