The moon for Jews?Israelis are buying up property on the moon.
Israelis own 10 percent of the privately owned area on the moon, according to Tom Wegner, a spokesman for Crazyshop, a company that sells plots of moon land to private individuals in Israel.
About 10,000 Israelis have purchased moon property since it became available in 2000. Of the 10 million acres sold worldwide, 1 million are owned by residents of Israel, Wegner said Wednesday.
"Some Israelis believe that buying land on the moon is an original gift and a great investment that their grandchildren might benefit from," he told The Jerusalem Post.
Yes, we like the moon. As Omri Ceren points out, it makes sense. Jews are just trying to find a piece of real estate that doesn't come with anti-Semites.
The United Nations' Outer Space Treaty banned states from purchasing land in space, but allowed individual citizens to purchase land, said Movshovitz.
As a result, it is possible that in the near future NASA will have to buy land from the private property owners, enabling them to demand large sums for their plots.
However, said Wegman, not all the buyers are concerned with finances. Owning land in outer space appeals to those out for adventure, and many buyers look forward to the time they can visit their properties, he reported.
US-based Space Adventure plans to send tourists to the moon seven to 10 years from now. But at $100 million a trip, space travel will be beyond the budget of many moon land owners.
I wonder if the deed comes with photos of your property.
I wonder how long it will be before the Arab media talks about the Israeli intent to colonize the moon. Five bucks says they'll say it was already an Islamic waqf.

But the moon is the symbol of Islam. There's going to be trouble
Can't have Jews living on a symbol of Islam. That won't work.

What lunacy! (Pun intended)
Who in their right mind would buy property on the moon, or anywhere other than Earth? What exactly are they planning to do with it? Build condos? As for visiting or living on such property, futurists have been promising space colonies since the 1950s at least, and we're not even remotely close to seeing them. Why? Because NASA and its counterparts around the world know better than to throw their limited funding away on such pipe dreams.
The Israelis mentioned in the article would've done better to spend their spare NS250 on a vacation, electronic gadgets, or--here's a thought--give it to tzedakah.

Is this even legal? Like, do
Is this even legal? Like, do international treaties allow private individuals to buy property on the moon?
I feel like if this was actual property, it would all be bought up by like Bill Gates and Richard Branson pretty damn quick.

Presumably it's legal
Yeah, my first reaction was also "Is this legal?" But according to the Israel Space Society adviser quoted in the J-Post article, apparently it is legal for private individuals. But to my mind, buying "property" on the moon falls under the same category as paying to name a star after yourself, or one of those "Earn up to $5000 a month working at home" dealies. It may technically be legal, but it's a scam.
