They normally tuck into warm, dry dens around October-November, but it's been too hot and moist for them to find suitable "bedrooms." So they're roaming around and munching on twigs and berries to build up body fat for the hibernation.

As long as the food supply remains plentiful the locals shouldn't worry too much about maulings, the article reports. Hunters "stalking birds and hares" may need protection though, which is why Russian environmental officials have hired observers to monitor the hunting woods. Hmmmm... Bear versus "observer"...
