Daily commentary on the ADL/Armenian Genocide uproar

HA'ARETZ OP-ED CALLS FOR FOXMAN'S RESIGNATION: Today Ha’aretz published "The Politics of Hypocrisy," an op-ed by Friend of Jewcy Evan Goldstein in which Evan calls for Abraham Foxman’s resignation.

Evan laments Foxman’s decline from an “ardent champion of civil rights” to a morally obtuse and ethically challenged” embarrassment. He's also exasperated by Foxman’s explanation that his “reversal” on the Armenian Genocide issue was motivated by his "concern for the unity of the Jewish community.” Asks Evan, “What does the unity or disunity of the Jewish people have to do with distinguishing between historical fact and malicious fabrication?”

"Morally obtuse" is a pitch-perfect description of the following Foxman comments: “This is not a time for Jews to be attacking each other over an issue that is really not central.” “Now, they’ve insisted on the g-word. Fine.” “I still don’t think it’s our issue, but so many people believe it is our issue… I said okay.”

Unbelievable. But okay, so Foxman didn’t quite summon the moral fervor of the Jewish prophets when he made these comments to reporters. Let’s put aside the moral issues for a moment. I'm also blown away by the jaw-dropping political incompetence here.

There was an uproar over Foxman’s denial of genocide because people consider this a morally salient issue, and one that should transcend politics. Foxman's underlings at the national ADL must be mortified that Foxman would tell every reporter within earshot that he only revisited it because he didn’t want Jews wasting their energy arguing about something this unimportant. How can a man who spent four decades engaged in public debate on sensitive issues be so profoundly tone-deaf to sensibilities about genocide? It gobsmacks.

So when one member of the ADL frets to the Boston Globe over the question, “Are we an organization of principle?” Um… how about, “no.” Not so long as the guy responsible for the above comments is calling the shots.

WILL THE ADL LOBBY AGAINST THE CONGRESSIONAL RESOLUTIONS?: When Foxman issued his statement declaring that that “the consequences of [Turkish] actions were indeed tantamount to genocide,” this was, as I’ve said previously, not at all a recognition of the genocide but rather a restatement of a typical trope of the denialists: No one tried to obliterate the Armenian people, and whatever happened was simply an ugly and unplanned outcome of war.

However, most Armenian-Americans seem willing to accept that the ADL has reversed its position, because they want to move on to the more important issue: the Congressional resolutions on the genocide. Before Foxman issued his statement, David Boyajian, the Armenian-American from Newton, Massachusetts who did so much to get events in his home state rolling, sent me this comment in e-mail:

Joey, something is up: damage control. They want the issue to die, with ADL making some half-baked acknowledgment and then promptly continuing to lobby against us as before. It's a very sneaky game.

And that’s exactly what seems to have come to pass. Ultimately, most Armenian-Americans don’t just want the recognition of the ADL, they want the ADL and other Jewish organizations to stop lobbying against the congressional resolutions recognizing the genocide. And that, now, is the big question before those of us who care about the Armenian Genocide and/or the moral integrity of “justice-seeking” Jewish organizations such as the ADL.

Thomas Lifson of American Thinker put it this way:

A genocide is still a genocide, whether or not it is politically convenient to speak the truth. I always thought the ADL was supposed to be in the moral truth-telling business. After all, if it expects to be taken seriously as a moral force, it needs to be.

So I believe the organization needs to clarify why it now believes the Armenian genocide was a genocide, and why it doesn't want Congress calling it that.

i don't get it

i understand your position on this and i don't disagree necessarily; but is there nothing else for you to blog about? your ax must surely be dull by now. and the self-congratulation is unbecoming.

Joey Kurtzman

No; and self-congratulation

I don't think a blog post a day is too much for this issue, no. And people seem to be up for it, judging by the normal ways you assess what sort of content people respond to.

Where is the self-congratulation?

Raw & Jewcy Coverage

Being an American of Armenian decent - I think I can speak for all of us Armenian-Americans thanking you and other Jews who have supported and continue to support the ending of the denial of the Armenian Genocide and also supported and continue to support the resolutions before Congress acknowedging the genocide and proper rememberance of the victims.

Without your support and completely raw and jewcy coverage, whereby the "consequences of those actions were indeed tantamount to" ackowledgement of "genocide" by Foxman, the ADL "acknowledgement" would not have been possible under any circumstances.

This is a ture case of Edward Buler-Lytton's 1839 saying "The pen is mightier than the sword".

It will be very interesting reading how your Jewcy revolution unfolds. If Foxman does end up falling - then the Jewcy staff have ushered in a new area of democracy - webocracy (the process of where blogs, comments, debates, and information via the web causes public opinion to change significantly the political positions of people, organizations, and governments)- A perfect example of where the Goliath's are fallen by the David's.

Thanks again - MarkR

Keep it up Joey

I'm glad that you're keeping pressure on Foxman. The ADL's so-called "recognition" of the Armenian genocide was as worthless as a cheese sandwich.

The Kiss

The KissAnyone remember this picture from a few years ago?:
http://pajamasmedia.com/upload/2006/07/kiss-1.jpg
http://static.crooksandliars.com/2007/01/the-kiss.jpg

Simply titled "The Kiss", it was George W. Bush showing his affection to Joe Lieberman. As we all know, this came back to haunt Lieberman in spades as the picture resurfaced again and again during his 2006 re-election campaign (including in float form) connecting Lieberman to Bush, eventually pushing him out of the Democratic party.

Interesting picture here published yesterday by a Turkish source.

Ethnic identity

Joey,

I always tell my fellow Armenians that their Armenianness is worthless if they lack in humanity. I think same should apply to Foxman and others like him, their Jewishness is worthless if they lack human decency. Foxman's acheavements for jewish causes amount to zero if he is getting things done by trampling on the rights of others and denying justice to non-jews. One should be proud of being a good human and not just being a good Armenian or Jew, or whatever other ethnicity. Truth and moral integrity should never be for sale.

I think a post-a-day...

is certainly appropriate for something this important.  Foxman's misuse of the ADL platform and support of Turkish/Ottoman historical revionism is serious, and Jewcy's coverage and concern matter.

ADL Reiterates Support For Efforts To Reconcile Turkey And Armenia

New York, NY, August 23, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today reiterated its support for efforts to bring together Turkey and Armenia to resolve differences over their shared history.

Glen S. Lewy, ADL National Chair and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

We must encourage steps to create an atmosphere in which Armenia will respond favorably to the several recent overtures of Turkey to convene a joint commission to assist the parties in achieving a resolution of their profound differences. We believe there are many renowned historians, human rights activists and distinguished world leaders who are willing to lend their knowledge, experience and judgment to this cause. We know that earlier this year, Professor Elie Wiesel and more than 50 of his fellow Nobel Laureates called for concrete steps to be taken by Turkey and Armenia to find a way forward to reach the goal of reconciliation, and that, last week, Professor Wiesel reaffirmed his support for efforts to create a body in which both Turkish and Armenian experts can come together to work cooperatively in re-examining the shared past of both peoples.

The force and passion of the debate today leaves us more convinced than ever that this issue does not belong in a forum such as the United States Congress.

The proper role of those of us who deeply believe the controversy must be resolved is to promote and support Turkey and Armenia in efforts to bring them together to begin the process of reconciliation. Although independent scholars may have reached a consensus about the genocide, in an effort to help accomplish the reconciliation there is room for further dispassionate scholarly examination of the details of those dark and terrible days.

ADL and the American Jewish community should focus their attention on supporting efforts to urge Turkey and Armenia to make this happen.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

Dissapointed

SO it looks like the Turks have give a pay rise to the ADL bored , I am so upset to see these money hungry people go free , and still lie to the public.
Once and for all we do not need to bring this question to the table and have scholarly discussion about the Genocide, It is a FACT and all the documents prove it occurred, so the Turkish Boss’s and ADL employees can drop this because this has become the next line of defense for the Armenian community the Denial of our Genocide has gone on for to long and we will not stand and watch this unfold in front of our eyes.
As far as I am concerned Mr FOX should be gotten rid off , it was he who put his foot into it , and if he or anyone thinks that they can Deny 1.5 million people butchered as Genocide then they are asking for trouble .

SAD DAY for those who are for the truth, I feel sorry for those who have fought for the past week teach this organization a lesson.

Pathetic People running the ADL dog and pony show

The whole of ADL's managment group, Lewy and Foxman, are a bunch of pathetic Americans. How low can they go? They have now become Genocide Denial Spin Doctors.

The recent suggestion of having Armenia/Armenians respond to Turkey/Turkish overtures of reviewing history is just the sort of revisionism that is a trap. How would the Jewish community feel if some leading Armenian American Organizations request that Isreal/Jewish respond to Neo-Nazi overtures of reviewing history of WWII?

The record of the events that occurred in Anatolia speak for themselves. Documents abound via the outside observers to what occurred to the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks.

Jewcy needs to turn up the heat on Lewy also. The ADL core is rotten and like any rotten apple - you need to get rid of it before it spoils the whole bunch. These people with this position on the Armenian Genocide will destroy the legacy of the ADL.

Turkish PM claims ADL retracts genocide statement

Taken from article here:
http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/detaylar.do?load=detay&link=120350

I see nothing that retracts his statement, and yet that didn't stop the Turkish PM from triumphantly declaring: "The wrong step that has been taken is corrected," said Erdoğan in subsequent comments to reporters. "They said they shared our sensitivity and expressed the mistake they made. … They said they will continue to give us all the support they have given so far," he added.

I've had enough of this crap (keep up your reporting though, that I'm not sick of.)

Mel Gibson must be rolling

Mel Gibson must be rolling in his shorts right now! NEVER AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN will I believe one syllable that comes from the ADL leadership until this is fixed properly.

Send your money elsewhere

Send your funds to another organization.

there are many other organizations out there that are a lot more worthy of your money. Tell your parents that, too.

Try Facing History ---- > facing.org

The only way for Foxman to understand and apologize (or better yet - resign) is to cut funding the ADL.

Stop sending any money to the ADL until it redresses itself to a proper moral standard.

Spread the word.

Mel Gibson

Does anyone know Mel's e-mail? We should divert ADL funding to him to direct a historical movie about Armenian Genocide, that should do a number on Foxman and his gang.

Mel Gibson

A Mel Gibson movie about the Armenian Genocide.  What a great idea!  LOL!

Vrezh

Mel Gibson

Yeah, we need Mel's e-mail to send Foxman's money via PayPal to him with a note "Courtesy of Abe Foxman and ADL in support of Armenian Genocide movie".

The New Anatolian reports

The New Anatolian reports that Foxman wrote a letter to Turkish leaders stating the following:

"We have utmost respect for you and the Turkish people. We had no
intention to put the Turkish people or its leaders in a difficult
position. I am writing this letter to you to express our sorrow over
what we have caused for the leadership and people of Turkey in the
past few days," told Foxman in his letter.

Foxman added in his letter that "the ADL will work to strengthen
relations with Turkey. It makes our pain worse to see that the recent
discussions have caused tension in our friendly ties".

Here's the link: http://www.thenewanatolian.com/tna-28438.html

PUKE! He takes such a warm and loving tone with Genocide Deniers, yet he grudgingly spits out vile admissions about his reasoning for accepting the TRUTH. I really do hate him more with each passing day!

I disagree with Foxmans

I disagree with Foxmans comments on the Armenian genocide. However, having Haaretz back your position is no prize. In talkback sessions, Haaretz prints Holocaust denial itself, so criticizing Foxman is like being called black by the kettle. Haaretz also did Israel a disservice by suggesting to Arafat that the same strategies that worked in Southern lebanon would be effective in making Israel collapse. The reason that Arafat rejected Camp David and Taba is that Arafat felt that with a little violence, he could eliminate Israel rather than settle for the 1967 borders

I find the idea that the

I find the idea that the attempted genocide of the Armenian people is worth only one Jewcy post per day to be frankly insulting. Is that all a million lives are worth to you? One post, maybe in the morning, the evening, whenever? If anything, Jewcy should be posting hourly, if it is to even begin to scratch the iceberg of appropriateness.

When I talk of hourly posts, mind you, I do not talk of this generalist edumacationalism that Jewcy has been doing, with its long context pieces and earnest explanation of the events and circumstances of the attempted genocide of the Armenians. No. Instead, I believe Jewcy should personalize this issue, and make it all about Abe Foxman and the ADL.

Because, let's face it. Without Abe Foxman, there is no ADL; and without the ADL, there is no recognition of historic wrongs. So let's see a tighter focus on Abe Foxman. Who is he? Do we like him or not? What kind of tea does he drink? Where does the future of his career lie? If Armenians decided to pour huge amounts of money into recognition of this event, and -- logically -- came to the conclusion that the best way to do that was by donating to a Jewish organisation, how would Abe Foxman react? (Oops. Got that one.)

So enough with explaining about what happened. All Jews are already experts in that. Instead let's make it all Abe, all the time. And I do mean all the time, please.
