I Dare You To Not Platonically Love Amy Winehouse

Amy WinehouseAmy WinehouseBritish Jazzy singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse is everywhere these days. In Britain, she's been a pop icon/spectacle for a some time now, doing the club circuit with such privileged British brats as Kelly Osbourne. With a personal life weighed down with talk of week-long benders and eating disorders, Winehouse isn't known for being too stable and could probably put both Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to shame in the "party girl" persona dept.

Admittedly, Winehouse feels the genuine article, a bit more affable in her struggles, and she's got the chops to back it. When I saw her video play after watching an episode of "Real World: Denver," I knew she was headed to a career of being the "it" girl and destined to be the songstress providing the credit music and video for MTV for such shows as "The Hills" and "The Newlyweds: [Some Other Couple Headed For Divorce After The Show Wraps Up]

Anyways, here is a clip from Amy's latest album. It doesn't do justice to her range, but it shows her appeal. I think.

"They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no no"

I could listen to "Rehab" all day.  Actually, yesterday I did.

Shit, Sanjaya might be in

Shit, Sanjaya might be in real trouble tonight. Even more worryingly, Lakisha and Melinda both really struggled. Blake was just brilliant, a beat-boxing hipster crossed with Tony Bennett.

American Idol

Joey, interesting that you brought up Idol.  Last night Amy and I were talking about whether Amy Winehouse has caught on in the US because Dreamgirls has made everyone primed for more (and, uh, better) 60s-style soul.  If so, and if we don't all get sick of it in the next month or so, I think Lakisha is our girl.  (Personally, I like her better than Melinda, who seems weirdly sexless.)

Maybe this is a better conversation for Skype, but does it freak you out how much Blake looks like Tahl?  Also, do you have any explanation for Sanjaya's likeability?  He's kind of awful, but it would break my heart to see the poor kid get voted off.  Is it just a sympathy thing?

The Idol Issue

Lakisha is pretty amazing...after her first Jennifer Hudson routine I thought she was in like Flynn. But the last couple weeks she's left me cold. Meanwhile, I grit my teeth every Melinda gives the judges that "you mean, you like MEEE? MEEEEE?" look. Give it up, lady. But meanwhile, she's just money, week after week. At this point, if I voted, I'd vote for her.

Onto the problematic Sanjaya issue. For me, this is where all the drama is. I'll die when he's voted off. But he's just so awful. Last night was scary. He's cute, he's young, he's shy, he's the underdog, he's humble, he's trying hard, lots of likeability factors. Plus, I think youngish cosmo Americans might be a bit prone to fetishizing South Asians. In our eyes they inherit a bit of British class without the frigidity or snobbery, and so we get culture points, but also New Left points for liking someone with the name "Sanjaya Malakar" as opposed to someone named "Graham Winterbottom", so it's win-win all around.

That's a very kind thing to say about Tahl. Blake is an excellent-looking fellow, except that he's got a weirdly chunky rear-end, doesn't fit his frame at all, ruins his outfits a little.

The racial politics of American Idol...

I'm never watching it again, seriously. Haley and Phil are still around, but Stephanie got sent home? I'm through, seriously, Kendra can't drag me back with wild horses.

The racial politics of idol are pretty interesting...it's not racist in the way Elton John or Rosie O'Donnell said...African-American contestants get picked over Caucasians all the time, and the show's had two African-American champions. But can you seriously tell me that a Caucasian with Stephanie's talent would have been sent home last night? Not a chance. So who needs to watch that crap?

On the other hand, "Idol Gives Back" is an interesting and potentially significant moment in the history of American philanthropy...but still, I'm out.
