If Jewcy had a politburo, this would be its first diktat. If we issued encyclicals, this would be the first to go out under the waxy Shin seal. Our communiqué to all Jewcers: please get behind the Domestic Jewish Agenda 2008.
In America, self-anointed ethnic leaders make smashing careers out of speaking on behalf of enormous constituencies to which they have dubious claim. Jewish America is no different. For too long, presidential candidates have assessed the concerns of the Jewish community by bending down and inviting professional Jewish gasbags such as Abraham Foxman and Malcolm Hoenlein to flatulate into their ear. Never heard of ‘em? Tough shit. They’re speaking on your behalf anyway.
Until now. Jewish Funds for Justice and JSpot have teamed up with Jewcy and a slew of other worthy partners to harness the decentralizing power of the internet and run an end-around of Organized Jewry in the upcoming presidential election. We’re canvassing all Jewishy people with an internet connection, and asking them to fill out this online petition.
The petition describes ten domestic issues—child care, civil rights, education, environment, health care, housing, immigration, Katrina/Rita, seniors, and wages—and asks you to identify the five that will have the greatest influence on your presidential vote in 2008.
On May 29, the votes will be tallied and sent to every presidential candidate under the names of all signatories. We'll request a written explanation as to how that candidate will address the concerns of the American Jewish community. As candidates reply, their answers will be publicized here at Jewcy and at other partner websites.
So help us show that there's a bigger, broader Jewish agenda than is evident in the plenary meetings and press releases of a handful of sclerotic old Jewish organizations. Add your voice to the Domestic Jewish Agenda 2008.

The petition isn't
The petition isn't "describing" issues, it's presenting the usual hard-left boilerplate propaganda that politically active non-orthodox Jews like to pass off as being Mandated by their Beliefs. It's a given that liberal Jews provide better food than the Unitarians, but these days there's not much difference beyond that.
Oh well, Mazel Tov, happy Chag, etc.

Yes, but...
Yes, I confess that the issues are not characterized exactly as I would have done. And anyway, the biggest issues for me are international, not domestic. But using the internet to bypass traditional Jewish orgs and present candidates with a program formed outside Big Jewry...that's a very good and necessary thing. As Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain both famously said, "Americans will only be free when the last lobbyist has been garroted with the entrails of the last ethnic spokesperson."

OK, however...
Dear Joey, I can't fault your motivation for citing this thing, then. But the framing of these issues in the petition deviates not one iota from the positions that Foxman et al. would take. In fact, Foxman would probably call someone an anti-semite for disagreeing with the characterizations.
Just because it's internet-based doesn't mean it isn't ghetto politics.

Issues?
What kind of issues are these? Why do you think they should resonate with other Jews? Because you are interested in them? How can they be said to affect the "Jewish" community. If you allowed people to write in their own issues perhaps it would actually reflect Jewish interest. Instead one pompous self important Jewish leader has been substituted by another. Where is the war in Iraq? Foreign policy and support of aid to Africa? Solving the crisis in Darfur? Support of Israel? Confrontation with Iran? The only topic on YOUR list that interests me is education and perhaps medical insurance. But the others? Katrina? There are 7 Billion people on this planet. - While you are at it take some time to consider real Jewish problems. The lack of affordable Jewish education should be the highest priority for the Jewish community. If not, 20 years from now one will turn around and there will be no Jewish community, save for the hareidim in NYC. You are just an example of another Jewish Organization selling the emperor's clothes.

The Jewnited States
Domestic Jewish Agenda in America = more international Jewish belligerence/wars that make America even more hated worldwide (note: Jews will not serve in the military but they will profit from them behind NYC desks), more American media-induced fear and encouragement of Islamophobia, further degradation of the moral tone of America through the Jewish-owned porn industry and nationwide Jewish media, more Wall Street/IRS/Federal Reserve (i.e. Jewish) rip-offs, owning both the Democrats and Republicans and being even more of a slave to Israel through The Lobby, Jewish owned 'investment banks' gain record profits while the middle and lower classes continue to flounder, further Jewish self-segregation in hugely polluting cities, Jewish baby factories full steam ahead in Kiryas Joel (NY) and elsewhere...what a GLORIOUS people!
