DAILY SHVITZ
Dating Blogger Charles: "Go Forth and Inter-marry"

It seems to me that as a people who have been persecuted for 5,000 years, we Jews would have a more enlightened and less secular attitude toward those we choose as life partners.

Amy Odell’s recent article, “Shalom, Be Alone,” touches on the subject of inter-marriage. Many of her readers had a strong reaction to her opinion that many of us are limiting ourselves by only choosing Jewish mates. I understand that many feel that Judaism is not just a religion or a culture/ethnicity, but something akin to the master race (and who could argue with that?).

Talking recently to a non-Jew friend of mine, she said that she refused to date anyone that is not at least a little bit Italian. It dawned on me once again, that while I belong to and associate with a community that has survived over 5,000 years by sticking together and abiding by their laws, we are living in a world where remaining ethnically pure is no longer viable. We fight for peace and equal rights and then turn around with the prejudice that marrying outside our ethnic/religious group is the way of the fallen. If it is still 1850, I would like to know why women aren’t completely covered and wearing corsets. Anyone?

Perhaps it’s true, as we’ve recently heard, that Jews possess some genetic advantages. Maybe avoiding inter-relationships really will make you more to likely birth another doctor, lawyer, or banker. But if your reasons are to preserve the Jewish genes that have been around for the past 5,000 years, allow me to refer you to Meryl Yourish’s post about James Watson and his double helix. Genes, by the way, are not fixed, they oscillate, so who we associate with could actually change our genetic structure. Beware, my superior friends.

I expect Lubavitch Jews not to inter-marry, as I expect Hasidic Jews not to intermarry; but these sects are isolated from society and many carry unrealistic views about how we heathens live our lives. Not to mention, they are usually not fair-haired and blue-eyed, which as we all know is absolutely and undeniably horrendous.

No matter where you are from or whom you marry you can raise your children ethnically and religiously in any combination you desire. I, as a half French/half Greek Jew can choose to raise my kids as Mexican-Korean Hindus if it suits my fancy. We have choices about how we identify ourselves and our children and I am asking the Jewish community, one which knows more about closed-mindedness than any other group, to think a outside the box. It’s ludicrous that we as Jews have a problem intermarrying (which we should leave to the Greeks and Italians) but absolutely no problem driving a huge Mercedes, or Volkswagen, the chosen car of the Nazis.

Maybe it is time for us all to interbreed. One race under G-d, indivisible… that way we have no reason to doubt or hate anyone else or their race/religion or what have you. The moral of my story: Interbreed now, the world depends on it.

Charles...really??

Though I do enjoy your writing in general, I think this time you stepped over the line into the ridiculas. You have made grand statements with out anything to back them up, by doing this you sound ignorant, and not a member of the so-called 'master race'. You must be careful with your words young man, you are stepping into a different sphere, one I can see you clearly do not have any true experience with. Jews do not, and will not call themselves a 'master race', rather the 'choosen people'. It is VERY different. We do not see ourselves as a race, that is a term that 'outsiders' call us, not any of our own. There are no 'races' that can be converted too. I am a white, brown haired, Jew, I can not 'convert' to being black---that is the definition of a race. Watch your words and check your facts before you speak about such things.

Why are Jews so feakin' sensitive about ....

Think about the implications of chosen people vs. Master race... many believe that jews are a race but that is besides the point...

Its called Satire, it is a noun, it is phrenetically pronounced  sat-ah-y-uh -r and it is defined as the use of irony, satire, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly etc. or a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule...

If you were to read Amy Odells column which I reference in my column and read the comments left for her, you would see my reason for taking the direction I did with this piece. My point was to infact make the statements I made in the way I did, and if you read the comments from her column, you would see that many jews consider being jewish as more than a religion, but a race and ethnicity.

And just for the record, I never step over the line... I pick up the line and I move it.

Is Judaism a Race?

Race:

1.A group of persons related by common descent or heredity

2. a population so related

3.a group of tribes or people forming an ethnic stock

4. any people united by common history, language, cultural traits.

And by the way geneticly, Jews as a race are the only people who carry Tasacks and the Cohan Gene

Adam Shprintzen

A few thoughts...

Ummm, actually Tay Sachs is only amongst Ashkenazim.

First point...race is an entirely social construct. 100 years ago, someone who was Polish, Irish or Italian, etc...etc...was considered Polish, Irish or Italian. Now (in the US at least) they are just generically "white."  Just the fact that these definitions change periodically proves that race is a social construct. A myth, really (Jews in the US were classified as anything ranging from Hebrews to "Oriental," etc...around the turn of the 20th century).

Second...anyone can be and IS a Jew. Black, Asian, Indian, African, blah blah blah.  Just because some people consider Judaism to be an ethnicity (generally, I might add, people who aren't religious--not making a judgement, but it does seem to be secular peeps who try to play up the "ethnically Jewish" argument) does not make it inherently accurate.

Why is this important? Well, most importantly, playing off the race or ethnicity card is inherently exlusionary--not to mention somewhat offensive to non-Ashkenazim. Second, as we become more and more absorbed into mainstream cultures,  the more and more our Jewishness becomes watered down in deference to the dominate culture.  Instead of taking pride in those things that make us who we are, the trend has been for American Jews to try to assimilate into a really stringent sense of Americaness.  And, I would argue, lose a big part of ourselves in the process.

Dear Mr. Ressler,

I would like to talk to you about your comments on mine. I would first like to state that I do NOT enjoy the harsh tone in the diatribe you presented with me. I was simply, though apparently quite harshly, stating my opinion on your article. Seeing that you write for an interactive website, I would
hope that you would be more engaging when people interact/respond/read your articles.
That being said, I do feel compelled to discuss your retorts. I do understand that there are people, jews included, that feel that being jewish means that you believe that Judiasm is a race. Those people, and I must say this bluntly, are not only wrong, but slightly ignorant or unstudied.
tYou stated in a later comment that there are disticntive 'jewish ntraits',listing Tesacks as an example. It was a wonderful example, simply because it demonstraits the need of knowledge of the Jewish people to use it. The Reason why Only Jews are afflicted by that heartless syndrome is because of all of the years that they were subjected to living in the ghettos in Europe during WWII. The interbreeding and disease in these areas resulted in the genetic disorder we identify as tesachs.
The 'Cohan' gene is also an interesting and important point. Yes, there is an identifiable 'Jewish' gene, but it is a genetic pattern that is marked back to Abraham. There are people identified in Ethopia, Sudan, Western China, and Yemen that have these markings in their genetic code. I think I understand why you would call it the 'Cohen Code', because of course, all of the Cohens can be traced back to Abraham; but you need to know it is Abraham that we are tracing these genes too, and NOT the high priests at the time.
My point is that you do not know your facts very well, you are shouting opinions, and that is dangerous. We Are Not The Master Race, nor is being a member of the Jewish faith thought of as a race by those who fully understand the religion. I think you are a wonderful young man, even though I have never met you, but I was trying to explain to you before some of the reasons why you were wrong, and how.
Being Jewish is NOT a gift, nor do Jews look at it that way. It is a resoncibilty. That is how G-D presented the religion in the Torah. Please, please, DO NOT refer to Jews as the 'master race', it is comments like that that have caused many years of terror for us; this all lays in simple misinterpretation.
I hope you have a wonderful night Charles, I am not trying/aiming to offend you. I might have reacted more personally than I intended, but I was just trying to make a point(one that I think is very important).

Mode of Being

Hmmm . . . yes, indeed, race is a social construct. Perhaps we can say instead, with Maurice Blanchot (French novelist/philosopher who was a good friend of Emmanuel Levinas, a Jewish philosopher), that Judaism -- Jewishness -- is an essential modality of all that is human. In other words, t's a mode of being. Take it for what it's worth.

Adam Shprintzen

And more...

Yes, yes, yes...wonderful point Monica.  Which, then, here's an interesting question. If one accepts that it is a mode of being...what happens if the essence of that mode of being is stripped away (culturally, religiously, etc...)? Does it cease to exist?

Another point that has been hinted towards, but not explicitly brought up. The race/ethnicity argument is also phenomenally offensive to anyone who has converted to Judaism (a term I really dislike but...Jew by Choice also isn't quite right. I mean, we are ALL Jews by choice).  Especially for those who have always felt as if they have a Jewish soul, but happen to have been born of non-Jewish parents.  Again, the ethnicity argument is just simply exclusionary.

The kind of "Jews" Hilter would love.

Are any real Jews writing for Jewcy? All I read in "Jewcy" is about how Jews should disappear from the planet and our a waste of space. Charles is a Judenrat who should write for a Nazi website. Is this site run by Nazis?

Michael Nehora

"Hilter?"

Who is this "Hilter," o brave anonymous troll?  Is that like a Halter top?  Or perhaps a Filter for your water faucet (keeps the evil Judenrats out of your water;  a nice accessory to your tinfoil yarmulke)?

Seriously, it's bad enough that your comments are so racial-purist ("Hilter" would love that), but if you're such a poor typist you misspell your favourite hyperbole the same way in two different messages...

Joey Kurtzman

A gragger with your keyboard?

I also noticed that that "Hilter" thing made it into both of the anon's posts. Neato. Is that like the text version of a gragger, blotting out his name?

Hilter top

I'm going to Vegas this weekend with a girlfriend, and I am totally going to wear my new "hilter top"!

Hitler.Lies and Truth...The editors of Jewcy lack of integrity!

As a someone who proof read everything that Charles writes and as the CEO of the two companies that he works for I felt compelled after seeing the reaction to his artice to shed some light on the actuality of his piece. I am a bit not shocked at the reaction he recieved to this article. The shocking thing is the difference between the pice that got published on Jewcy's website and the unedited version. I am unable to copy the original article into this comment, but can tell you that it has a very different message than the article posted. Its message is jestful and satyrical and not meant to provoke the jewish people in anger but rather in thought. I think there is an editorial problem when someone writes a pice and the content and message of that piece is completely altered in a way that makes the writer seem like something they are not. How far does the editorial right go?

The fact that Charles' name is attached to this piece and that the editors of this webzine do not have a problem compromising the integrity of there writers is offputting. This is my attempt to make right the injustice that was done to Charles' message. He is a thinking, not judgmental human who would not convey the message that is portrayed in Go Forth and Inter-Marry. He is not a Judenrat or a supporter of Hitler, the Nazi', or any group that approaches the world in a isolationist/destructive way.
