Great article. I am very much in favor or sex education. Being pro-choice and anti-abortion, I think that the way to lower abortion rates is not to force women to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, but to help prevent them from becoming pregnant in the first place. It is easy to think that if we don't tell teens about sex, they won't do it. Unfortunately, that sort of thinking just doesn't make sense.
The only problem I see with age appropriate education is that who decides what age is appropriate. Young girls are starting puberty much earlier these days than you would think. I have heard some politicians talk about starting sex education at 16. Many girls are experimenting with oral sex at 12. By the time they are 16, the message about respecting your body is lost. I think that it is a careful weighing of harm vs. benefits. If teaching middle school kids about sex and respecting your body when some of them may not be ready, does it do more harm to them, or more harm to the ones that need the information but don't get it.
It is all well an good to make legislation for the society that we wish we had, but the problems we see are a result of not meeting the needs of the one we have.
