American Jews hardly need some deep-seated shadow in order to pick a non-Jewish mate--probability alone will predict that most Jews will pick a mate from the 99% of the population that isn't Jewish. If you want to discourage intermarriage, you need to give a good reason why we should go out of way to limit potential spouses to 1% of the population.

And by the way, my parents had already "made it" in America before I was born. I've never dated a Wasp, and for that matter harldy dated any Americans at all, whether Jew or Gentile.
