There is a basic problem with gun laws, however. Generally, they only keep weapons out of the hands of law-abiding citizens (i.e. the people who respect and obey those laws). They have generally failed to keep them out of the hands of criminals.

So, what happens is that most of the law-abiding citizens are then unarmed, while the criminals still have guns. Not necissarily the desired effect.
