I got engaged last June and my - I mean our - wedding is in May. I did the Knot, the I Do Foundation, Organic Weddings, Jo Garten. My dress is made of hemp and we're going to "do our own flowers". I decided early on I would have a "green" wedding because that seemed right, plus it'd look really cool (and yes, I looked smug). Until I realized it's a bit harder than it seems, often more expensive and more work. Which would be fine if we weren't already balancing the massive weight of our massive, opinionated families (Irish-Catholics and Persian Jews) on top of it.
So I held fast to a few things (a hemp dress and no cut flowers) and let a few other things go (the recycled cardboard kippot)... a work in diplomacy of the most emotional kind. And I think it will be all right. We just keep reminding ourselves it's not about the party, it's about the life we live after that.
