IntInteresting write-up. As a Dutch Jew, I agree with Dr. Buruma's assessment of the state of Dutch tolerance during hte 2nd world war. The Netherlands had the largest percentage of deported Jews in Western Europe because of the relative inaction of the Dutch and also because of rampant outright collaboration. This is often glossed over in Dutch as well as Israeli sources. Theo van Gogh is another perfect example of someone who has been sanctified in a strange way. Before he was known as a muslim-bater, he was known as a jew-bater. He was brought to justice for his anti-semitic statements at the time. To a large degree the man was an agitator by profession who knew very wel what he was getting himself into. Obviously this does not condone at all his murder, but we should remove the halo from above his head. As a Jew, I am mindful of provocation against muslims. Very often, there isn't that much space between the muslim and the jew-bater.
