Obama seems better on international issues because, to my knowledge, he is--at least, "better" in the sense of "more in line with what I'd like to see in a president." It's possible that he's better because of his life experience, just as it's possible (probable) that Clinton's a better feminist choice because of hers.
What I was trying to get at is that identity does matter, and that in both Obama's and Clinton's case I think there's a connection between who they are and what their strengths are; but that in the end, it's the strengths, rather than the identity in and of itself, that matter.
