Funny, that's exactly what my straight male friends say about women. Personally, I'm not convinced this trait belongs to any group more than another. I think it's instilled in all of us as appropriate pre-courtship behavior by media that teaches us what "romance" is. In short, romantic comedies have a lot of suffering to answer for.
