This is why Lefties NEVER UNDERSTAND THE SOUTH. The flag is not always about bigotry or racism, that is what you put on it. A lot of southerns see the flag as one of rebellion against an over-reaching Federal government that tramples over state rights, which, again leftists see as a code word for racism, it's not. Like many things in life, the flag issue is not as cut and dry as the media and their fellow stooges want to believe. There is still a lot of prejudice AGAINST the south and this is well shown by the tone of coverage given to southern primaries.

while the confederate flag certainly may hold that meaning, you'd be hard-pressed to argue that it does not serve as a symbol of bigotry against black americans.  i think that one could easily take your argument and flip it on its head: this is why proponents of the confederate flag never understand (or care about) black america.  they insist on promoting a symbol which they know has very hurtful resonances.  shame.

Actually I had a long comment about how the swastika was a harmless symbol before the Nazis, but now would be totally inappropriate to put on a flag -- just as it's inappropriate to keep the confederate flag flying as a state symbol when millions of American citizens consider it an icon of their forced captivity. But I opted to take the comment down because I can't stand Internet message board debates.
