Photo of the Day: Anti-Israel Protesters Ruin SXSW “Buzz”

By Jewcy Staff / March 18, 2010

Nothing says "statement" more than dressing up in the finest Top Shop and Urban Outfitters gear, taking a trip to a hip music conference, and telling the world how bad Israel is for having musicians.

Being Jewish has anything to do with forcing masses of people from their home at gunpoint and waging perpetual war on them for the next 60 years.  We’re 6 million strong in the US.  Where’s our goddamned Jewish army and when do we get to do something like al-Tantura?  You’d think if nothing else us midwestern Jews would get off our lazy bums and score some prime real estate on the coast instead of cheerleading those Jews across the Atlantic who went out and did it.

I didn’t think you’d like the answer because it assumes Palestinians have agency in dealing with the occupier.  Apologies if that was a bad call.

    IsaacCohen : "anti-Israeli bigots are not really pro-peace; they’re just pro-Hamas."

Andrew: The nakba was committed in 1948; Hamas formed in 1987.

You’re absolutely right. My sentence should have read "The same way homophobic bigots are not really pro-marriage, but just anti-gay, I think anti-Israeli bigots are not really pro-peace; they’re just anti-Jewish."

Andrew: "an answer you won’t like"

lol Why? All you did was confirm my view and help me improve my statement.

We’re capable of self-criticism, uncomfortable with brutality, always longing for peace but alway ready to protect our country and our loved ones against those who would cravenly fire rockets at civilians or send their young to blow themselves up in falafel joints, commuter buses and pizzerias.

Maybe you don’t like to acknowledge your own brutality; too bad for you, any one with access to media less friendly than American TV is privy to it.  What does _____ have to do with defending yourself from terrorism?  We can fill in that blank with sniper fire at girls in class, land confiscations, house demolitions, administrative detention, torture, shooting non-violent demonstrators and yes, the entirety of Operation Cast Lead.

There weren’t any suicide bombings when the Israeli airforce bombed apartment buildings in Lebanon or when Rabin issued the order to "break their bones."  If you don’t like being answered back in the same language, don’t treat people as expendable in their homeland.  There’s no support for violent action against Israelis nor support for Hamas in the BDS campaign (by the way, someone holding a stupid placard is not the BDS campaign, in case the photos I’d expect are coming).  It’s a form of resistance that won’t kill innocent Israelis and your state has to be resisted.

Because Palestinian organizations are the ones calling for BDS and selecting targets for boycott.  It’s not up to western activsts to push for BDS against Egypt, Saudi or Iran without any input from the opposition in these countries.  The oppressed people must decide how to resist.

As an American, I support any form of BDS the victims of US war making might call for.

    anti-Israeli bigots are not really pro-peace; they’re just pro-Hamas.

The nakba was committed in 1948; Hamas formed in 1987.

It’s great because you don’t have to actually do anything and you can be dumber than a box of hair, just like the silly women in this pic. Even the video with the Huwaja family shows an incident that was so out of the ordinary that it made the papers here in Israel. We’re capable of self-criticism, uncomfortable with brutality, always longing for peace but alway ready to protect our country and our loved ones against those who would cravenly fire rockets at civilians or send their young to blow themselves up in falafel joints, commuter buses and pizzerias. So yeah. Go ahead. Boycott Israel. Thanks for sharing this information.

There’s nothing like Facebook activism. It’s great because you don’t have to actually do anything and you can be dumber than a box of hair, just like the silly women in this pic. Andrew: the real question that should be asked is why there are signs saying boycott Israel, but not one saying boycott Iran, Egpypt, Saudi Arabia, the United States, China, ect.

The same way homophobic bigots are not really pro-marriage but just anti-gay, I think anti-Israeli bigots are not really pro-peace; they’re just pro-Hamas.

Yes andrew r. Let’s try to remember why there are boycott Israel signs. OK, right. Apartheid. Genocide. Rivers of blood, veritable rivers of blood, flowing in the streets as one massacre after another is being perpetrated in what has been described as the most horrific human rights tragedy in the world today. Families dispossesed. Children and old ladies targeted for anihilation. Women like Keren Levy representing an entire nation drunk with blood lust. And did I mention the most horrific human rights tragedy in the world today?

Oh. Except for one small thing. That’s not what’s going on. Not by a long shot.

I’m no fashion critic, so you decide.

    Keren Levy:  hot or not?

IDF soldiers are always hot, especially that Good Hebrew Boy, so how about Ismail Huwaja, hot or not?

Let’s try to remember why there are boycott Israel signs to begin with.
