Mazel Tov, Lisa Loeb!
By Lilit Marcus / February 2, 2009A hearty Jewcy mazel tov to Lisa Loeb, whose wedding to "Late Night with Conan O’Brien" music coordinator Roey Hershkovitz was announced in yesterday’s New York Times. Loeb, who became the first unsigned artist ever to hit #1 on the singles charts with her song "Stay" (from the Reality Bites soundtrack, of course), has been more of a TV personality than a musician in the last few years. She and ex-boyfriend Dweezil Zappa cohosted Dweezil and Lisa, a Food Network show where the couple traveled around the country trying local restaurants and checking out local bands. After they broke up, Lisa had a short-lived reality show on E! called #1 Single, which followed her as she went on dates in New York City and tried to find Mr. Right. (One of her paramours, journalist Allen Salkin, is the author of the book about Festivus.)
There was no mention in the Times announcement of whether the couple had a civil or religious ceremony. Here, I offer some evidence for and against speculation that Loeb’s new husband is a Jew.
He Might Be a Jew Because…
- He is from Cliffside Park, NJ.
- His last name is Hershkovitz.
He Might Not Be a Jew Because…
- From the announcement: "That December they dined with friends on the Upper West Side, followed the next day by "a nondate" lunch date for two in Greenwich Village, where Ms. Loeb said they shared "a Fluffernutter" and also a concoction of peanut butter, banana, honey and bacon called "an Elvis.""
- Also from the announcement: "They began spending a lot of time together. But the next spring, both agreed that their timing was off. “Over a sad shrimp quesadilla, we realized that we really needed to break up,” Ms. Loeb said. “We were in different places in our lives.”
And now, because I grew up in the ’90s and love the hell out of this song, please enjoy "Stay." You may think that I am naive, but I thought that I was strong.

and i also really loved this song. Does she still rock those awesome glasses?
Admittedly, the weddings are my favorite part of my favorite section of the Sunday Times. I mostly only read about the people with Jewish names because I’m a heebcentric romantic and enjoy seeing my people get hitched and maybe have cute jewy babies. Anyways, I was sooo happy to see that Lisa, one of my favorite artists of 90′s who should have had more than one hit song, married to a Nice Jewish Boy. They look so happy and adorable in their picture. Mazel tov to them both!
You’re right, it aired on E! Man, I must be getting old if I can’t keep all my crappy celebrity reality shows straight.
I was sad when it got cancelled, but I’m very happy for Lisa & Roey!
Mazel Tov!
I have to say, I think a name like Hershkovitz beats out crab cakes any day.
